i think its a good idea, however, imo its a little like a bar mitzvah centerpeice.

I think it's a great idea because I had a very similar idea! I wanted to name our tables after movies filmed in Brooklyn. I was going to use the DVD artwork on the table # placecard and then also put a little card on each table with some facts about the movie - when it came out, who starred in it, what neighborhoods it was filmed in, etc.
FI nixed the idea saying people wouldn't get it. Though I may still overrule.

Love this idea! I wanted to do something with movie names also because FH and I love movies...but that could get a little too broad and hard.

But great idea!

Just tell him that you consulted with the brides on LIW.com (we ARE the experts, you know) and we say it is not cheesy or lacking class at all! It is a fun, creative idea that relates well to you two. You could put the reproductions of the movie cover in a nice frame...

That's what I told him. I just don't understand what his mother is going to add to the discussion. Like she knows better than I do what's in vogue at weddings these days (I do get like 4 wedding magazines a month!). Plus, FH's mother is in her mid-40's so all of her friends' kids haven't even gotten married yet. Nonetheless, apparently FH thinks she knows more than I do. And I told him all about my LIW girls and how a lot of people are doing this. Sometimes I could strangle him!

i think its a great idea. my FH and i are doing the same thing actually except its just with movies that we've seen together. our table will be 'Catch Me If You Can' because that's what we saw on our first date. We're going to somehow incorporate the movie into the centerpiece but we haven't figured out how yet.

We're going to have our wedding invitations be movie themed. Our e-party ones were just made and they are kind of like a movie premier invite. really cute... but hard to explain.

my mother hated the whole idea at first until we showed her the invitation and she fell in love.

jennie, i think it's a great idea! don't let fmil or anyone discourage you because it's not 'traditional'... people need to think outside the box a little...

I am definately the minority, but IMO the dvds as table names sounds like something you do at a bat mitzvah or sweet 16, not a wedding.

I've never actually been to a bar mitzvah, so I'll have to take your word for it

Is it using the pics of the DVD covers as table names that's mitzvah-y or the idea in general? Would it be better if I just wrote out the names of the tables and nixed the movie-poster thing? thanks!!

I think the charm of the idea is the movie poster -- what I think the suggestion is, PLEASE CORRECT IF I AM MISTAKEN, is that it is a little kitschy -- more in keeping with a younger aged party. I diasgree.

I am agreeing with you FH.. I think it is not a good idea to use DVD covers and movie names on your tables.. You are having a classy wedding and you are going to ruin it by doing something like that.. If I was you I would re-think your idea and maybe come up with something else.... Maybe like ie: Paris, Rome, Venice..... Something more upscale...

I agree w/ your FH (NOT about having to consult w/ his mother.....)
I think the names themselves can be cute, it's a great way to personalize your wedding. - But I think the DVD covers or movie posters may be a bit 'cheesy' . - that is IF your wedding is a formal event. - if it has a more casual tone, then I think it's great !

I think naming the tables after movies is cute.....the posters however remind me of a bar mitzvah......Every bar or bat mitzvah you go to has a theme. The centerpieces then take on that theme. I think by having the flowers on the table and then a movie poster it takes away some of the elegance.

As for Deb...no i didnt mean it was kitschy i meant it was bar mitzvahy
