Question about my Bird

My Parakeet's beak is getting long .. and I'm worried this might lead to a problem of some kind. He has two different blocks in his cage, and he doesn't really use either one.

Does anyone have any ideas what I might try? And does anyone know a good avian vet? I'd also like to have his wings clipped, but don't want to attempt it myself, so any thoughts on where to go for this (other than a vet) would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Question about my Bird

Kel, I have a parrot. Those blocks don't work on his beak either. Nor do the sand perches work on his nails. They get like razors!
If your going to just get him groomed, we go to First Flight. Its a bird store, ONLY birds. They do a great job.

First Flight Exotic Birds the Bird Experts
644 Middle Country Road, Selden, NY 11784
(631) 732-1494

For a quick fix you can try filing his beak down with a nail file. Just be gentle!
If you need an avian vet I have one in Patchogue. She's wonderful! I'll have to go find the number.

Re: Question about my Bird

LisaW,

Thanks so much for your help. The parakeet I had when I was younger used his block alot, from what I remember. And for him, we used to bring him to Sand Castle Aquarium on Deer Park Ave. .. the people there were extremely helpful when it came to birds, and we'd go there regularly for wing clippings .. unfortuntely there's a Subway in it's place now.

We just got this parakeet late last year, and the first block we have in there, he doesn't really touch at all, so I bought a second, thinking maybe he didn't like the orange flavor or something.

This bird is definitely a little strange .. he doesn't like millet, he doesn't like any of the treat bars .. and of the special, multivitamin food we buy for him, he simply eats the plain old seed and nothing else .. so I joke with my husband that I should just buy him the cheap stuff since that's all he eats anyway!

Thanks for the info on the Bird Experts. And if you could share the number for your avian vet, it would also be much appreciated .. for the 'just in case.'

Re: Question about my Bird

Kel,
I think all birds are different when it comes to food. Mine would just eat seed and nuts if we let him, but we were told its important for him to have a balanced diet including pellets, fresh fruit and veggies. I'm not sure if its the same for other birds though. We do spoil him though and found out 'accidentally' that he loves french fries

The avian vet is Deirdre Hensen
Paumanok Veterinary Hospital
639 Route 112
Patchogue
631 475 1312

Good luck and let us know what happens!
