Can a diamond chip??

My friend's diamond ring chipped (one of the side stones). I didn't know diamonds could chip!! Can they??

I don't think they should or can, without really special tools. I may be wrong, but I thought that was the purpose of having a diamond, b/c it lasts forever!

If the cut was bad it's possible. It is very very rare that it does, but if there is flaw in the cut, and it is hit in the right place, it can chip.

If the diamond was purchased with a crack in it, it could have chipped off from the crack.

if there is a flaw or feather inside the stone, that is a weak point, and if hit just right, it can chip.

Most gemstones are not tough and are easily susceptible to scratches, chipping and breakage.

Even diamonds the hardest substance known to man can be damaged by a sharp blow.

Baguettes crack much more easily.

SomedayBride and JennBaby are right. I was in the jewelry bus. for a while, and diamonds can unfortunately chip. If it was hit the right way (not necessarily even extremely hard, but at the right angle) a diamond will chip. The higher quality clarity and cut of the stone, the less likely it will chip, but even a flawless stone can chip

Yes!!! My diamond chipped last year and I had to replace it. Long story..but they can chip if hit the wrong way. She should be happy it was one of the smaller stones which I assume will be less expensive to replace.

I had to replace a 1.5 Carat diamond - not fun. Thank god for insurance.

i think a co-workers diamon chipped and she had it filed down somehow on the sides, if i am remembering correctly

I second what Jennbaby said, and it's true baquettes crack much easier, I did it with my own ring!
