Is anyone else counting on making money...

from your wedding to save your financial a$$ afterwards??? I never even thought about making money off my wedding and I never wanted it to be about that but at this point, if we dont make money off our wedding, we'll be living on the streets once its over!

Edit: Just thought maybe Id clarify for people who are crazy enough to think I would throw a wedding for the sole purpose of making money. I realize after reading this post today that it could sound very selfish although I never mentioned making back everything I spent or a lot of money at all for that matter. People love to take things out of context but I guess thats the bad thing about posting your feelings on a message board.

So will we!! We just started thinking about it recently, and if we dont make some money, i dont know what we are going to do! We at least need to get back what we put in.

I defiantly want to make enough for a down payment to a home! I really hate paying rent every month that goes to nothing!

I'd just like to make some money - not cover the cost or anything....but hopefully it will help offset the cost of moving back to NY, or at least give us some spending money on our HM.

yeea you wont get the amount that you paid for the wedding, but youll prob get a good chunk, we are using ALL of our savings to put a down payment on the house, so we are going to use whatever money we get from the wedding to make repairs on the house, the less we get the less repairs we make! hahaha

We started thinking about it lately- most of my registry gifts are gone and there's always all the gift cards I still have to spend on the rest that I really want.

We've been fortunate that FH's parents are helping out alot on the wedding and that we don't have to pay them back- I offered (as did FH) and they said a big NO on that.

I have a bit of debt that I would like to knock down but we'll see once we get the $$ in.

I told FH that whatever the amount (which we figure will be about $100 per couple at the very LEAST)- which can really add up so we're dividing it three ways - FH, Me, and a 'rainy day'/apartment fund. That way FH can spend some, I can spend some and then also have some to get things for the apartment.

Imo it works..lol

I didn't even want to register for stuff so that I could get money instead of gifts! But of course, what happens is that you get stuff that you don't want......

I knew we wouldn't make any money from our wedding going into it...and I was right. We made back less than 10% of what we put in.

I know I shouldnt and some people think its a little rude...
But I am so hoping that I get some money.. Not all of it back but at least half!!!!

I'm hoping to at least break even. We both come from pretty generous families but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

FH's best friend got married over the summer and was shocked that they 'only' got back like 40%.

FH thinks our families will be more generous but I told him let's try not to count on it -- and any money we do get will go straight into our 'dream house' fund.

P.S. I was at a wedding years ago where the bride was in the bathroom ripping open cards to pay off the vendors!

Crashing from '09... but you guys should read what the ladies on the Newlywed board have to say about this.

Almost all of them didn't break even or even get close to it. Def something to think about for me as I'm just starting to plan how much I'll be spending on things for the wedding.

From what we calculated, with the money we get from our families, and the deals we are working with some of our vendors who are our clients. We will probably make a couple grand, if that or possibly just break even

we are blessed that when my father passed away he left a 'wedding' account for me and my sisters. so all the money we make is profit.

FH and I have pretty much faced the fact that we will prob end up taking a hit with ours. It was tough when it came down to deciding on where to have it. Both of our parents are helping out a bit but realistically we are not expecting to make the money back in wedding gifts. I'd be happy breaking even but I'm not counting on that either. For us, we ended up choosing to go all out for our wedding and live in a shoe box afterwards

I don't want to be debbie downer but its VERY rare that someone would break even or even make money off their wedding. you can HOPE to get MAYBE 30%...50%-60 if theyre generous. but not everyone will follow the 'pay for plate' rule and even if everyone did...there would still be the cost of dj, limo, dress, favors, stationery, cps, etc.
