Our flawless 11/10/13 wedding with a TON of pictures!!! Somerley at Fox Hollow, Lighthouse Photography, Body Rock, Pedestals, Christy Ann Cosmetics, Bridal Reflections and much more!!!
This whole journey has been amazing. I wouldn't have found most of my vendors if it weren't for LIW brides!!! I think the best way to book vendors to use is through other people that have used them because you really get a sense of the kind of service that they provide. It's easy for any vendor to say they are great, but seeing what they do the day of the wedding is what it's all about. I have to say that not one thing went wrong the day of my wedding. I really think that the effort you put into your day is what you get out of it. We met with a ton of vendors for each service, looking for the best ones who fit our price and who matched our personalities. It gets stressful and sometimes you just wanna cry and scream, but it is so worth it in the end. It's a day filled with so much love and joy.. and it's over in the blink of an eye. Things don't always go according to plan but thanks to LIW, I really feel that (for the majority) we picked vendors that really cared about us and making our day unforgettable.Engagement:
Disneyworld- A++++++
I can't begin to explain how perfect it was! He did it right by the lake in front of Magic Kingdom at sunset. Better than that was how we were treated like royalty everywhere we went because we wore our 'just engaged' buttons. They sung to us on main street, pulled us onstage during a dinner show and were greeted by 'congratulations' by all the workers every place we went. They really made our time there special and Disneyworld is now such a special place for us. We almost went back there for the honeymoon (which we aren't doing until May), but I figured we will probably be going there a lot for the rest of our lives. Of course I can only find one picture (that my cousin blew up for us on a canvas) so here are some pictures from DUMBO from our engagement shoot by Joe Chahwan (Lighthouse Photography).
The one picture of a picture I can find from our engagement lol-
Engagement party invites/Save the dates- A+
Wedding Paper Divas: They have the cutest items at reasonable prices. They always have a sale going on so I never felt like I overpaid. Our save the dates were magnets, but we had to pay extra postage on them which it didn't say in the description. I called them to say what happened and they credited me money back for the postage that I paid. I love this company and I think all of their products are unique.
Engagement Party- B+
Mio Posto- Oceanside: We picked this place because my mom’s friend is a manager. The price was right and the food was good. However, the service was so slow and it took forever in between courses. It was nice though to have our own room all to ourselves for a reasonable price. Our friend made the cake so that was one expense we didn't have to worry about.
Engagement Ring/Wedding Bands- A+
SVS Fine Jewelry- Oceanside: I have nothing but good things to say about SVS and the owner, Sami. My husband knew him through a friend so we decided to start here when it came to looking at engagement rings and such. After meeting with him and looking at the quality of his jewelry, we knew we had to use him. His selection of jewelry is incredible and he is such a down to earth guy. He never made us feel pressured and gave us so much good advice when it came to picking out rings. I’m not just saying this, but everywhere I go people compliment me on my rings. My wedding band is beyond my wildest dreams and my husband’s ring is so classy. We go there now for all of our jewelry needs- earrings, necklaces (my sister in law got me a necklace from him with my new initials and I love it!), Pandora, cleaning etc. He cleaned/polished ALL of my wedding day jewelry- and my mom’s!- free of charge and everything sparkled like new. I thoroughly recommend him!
Bridal Shower- A++
A Touch of Italy- Baldwin: I grew up in Baldwin so this was always a favorite place of mine to order Italian food from. We’ve been going there since it first opened. I never would have imagined a bridal shower here, but I have to say that everything was delicious and the service was fantastic. The room was the perfect size for all of us (about 50 people), the waitresses helped us with opening presents and they even decorated the place with my family/bridesmaids. Every course was yummy and the presentation was amazing. For example, the salads had shredded mozzarella on top and around the edge of the plate were rolled up meats. It wasn’t just salad thrown on a plate. You can tell they took the time to make it look beautiful. All entrees came with a side of pasta. Dessert was made by my MIL’s friend who made a cupcake cake designed like a bridal gown. We weren’t rushed out. They let us stay as long as we liked, which was great for an afternoon party. It was nice to be able to enjoy my shower leisurely and not feel like they were rushing us.
Bridal Shower Thank You’s- B+
Etsy KikiBox: I wasn't sure what font I wanted, so she sent me multiple proofs until we found the one I loved. They said “Thank you from the future Mrs. (last name)” so I loved that they were personalized and didn’t just say “thank you”. My one issue with them was that she must have cut them to size, so some of them didn’t fit in the envelopes she provided me with. I wanted to just send them out already so I had to wait until she shipped me more envelopes that were bigger, but honestly too big for the cards. I probably spent just as much as I would have if I got them from Wedding Paper Divas and used a coupon, so I wish I did that. However, I wasn’t disappointed and she was pleasant to work with.
Bachelorette Party- A+
Harrah's Atlantic City: We stayed at Harrah’s for my bachelorette party and we had a blast. The people who worked there were not at all friendly, but the price was right for my girls. We really didn’t care where we stayed because the emphasis was on where we were going out. My closest friends stayed 2 nights with me and everyone else stayed 1 night. It was the perfect balance of people and we really had a blast. We went out to Dusk at Caesar’s the first night. The second night we ate at Carmine’s in the Tropicana (delicious!) and then we went out to Mur Mur at the Borgata. Mur Mur was incredible. We befriended a group celebrating a bachelor party who had VIP bottle service so we were able to sit and enjoy ourselves. However, if we hadn’t done that, there was no place to sit and relax if you got tired on the dance floor or just wanted to enjoy a drink, so it really depends on the type of setting you’re looking for. The music was incredible and I barely sat down all night.
Day-Of Jewelry- A+
Swarovski necklace & earrings/Nadri bracelet: I wanted simple but BLING. I bought everything at Lord & Taylor. I felt like they were the perfect amount of sparkle without being too much, and they really made me feel like a bride. My earrings and necklace were a matching set, and the bracelet was a cuff with 3 rows of small pavé crystals. Stunning and great quality!
Rehearsal Dinner- A+ food, B service
Café Formaggio: I didn’t like the set up of the tables because we weren’t all together. We knew we wouldn’t have the room to ourselves (it’s a “room” that’s up a few steps from the rest of the restaurant and separated by curtains), but we mostly did except for about 2-3 other tables. However, the setup was in rows so figuring out where to sit was difficult. The food was excellent and everyone enjoyed their meals. Dessert was a hit- oreo zeppoles and nutella pizza with fresh fruit on top. We were about 35 people so we took about 3 hours. I didn’t like that towards the end, the manager came up to us and asked us to “round our crew up”. He didn’t even say goodbye or thank you to us, which really made me angry considering how much my in-laws spent to have our party there. I work in a restaurant so I understand the need to turn tables. I just wish he could have been more polite about it and acted like he appreciated our business.
Ceremony Officiant- A++
Keith from NY Marriages: We were so lucky to have found Keith!!! So many people told us how they thoroughly enjoyed our ceremony and thought he was wonderful. Many told me how they were moved to tears. We aren't really religious so we knew we didn't want that kind of ceremony. He incorporated exactly what we wanted and some aspects from our religions (to appease our families!) His words were thoughtful and heartfelt. He was so much fun to talk to and really personalized our wedding for us. Thank you Keith for giving us such beautiful words to begin our marriage with!!!!!!!
Hotel for OOT guests- A++
The Inn at Fox Hollow: I was a little disappointed that they couldn't put us near our out of town guests. I called a few days before and the day before to try to request this. Other than that, the rooms were luxurious! Buffet breakfast in the morning was delicious. It was also a beautiful spot to take some of our pictures. Everyone at The Inn really helped me and my guests with our luggage and especially the day of our wedding. They brought everything over to our bridal suite. The block rate was definitely fair and all of our out of town guests loved staying there. Our family also stayed the night before our wedding with us since we had an early noon wedding the next day. It made getting ready so much easier since everyone was all in one place the morning of our wedding. It was also a 30 second walk to go from The Inn to the Fox Hollow! So convenient and really beautiful.
Wedding Venue- A+++++++++++++++
Fox Hollow: We booked The Somerley with Dave Guerin at an insanely great price because we booked it when only the room was finished. Everything else was still in blueprints. The second we walked into that room we instantly knew it was for us. It literally took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. While everyone we dealt with was good, we met Samir (he came in on his day off to meet with us) and knew we must have him as our maître d. When I say he is a professional, that doesn't even come close to explaining the kind of service he provided. Our wedding day was absolutely flawless and Samir did everything to make it this way. He put me at ease and made me completely confident that everything was taken care of. He even helped me escape the photographers to be able to eat our dinner. He has such a bubbly, outgoing personality it's imposible not to like him. Our food was outrageous and our guests were floored that they all had 7 choices for dinner entrees. They provided everything for our ceremony, which was beautiful and the staff made our reception room look spectacular. My bridal attendant Claudia also went out of her way to make sure anything we needed was taken care of immediately. She also made all of our stuff appear in our suite at The Inn next door so we didn't have to worry about cleaning up anything or taking anything back with us. I feel so lucky to have booked with Fox Hollow and have such a great staff taking care of us!!!! We had the most beautiful day ever and so many people told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to! Beyond flawless.
Tuxedos- B
Tuxedo Park: All of the men looked so handsome. I felt that the price was right, but many of the tuxedos seemed as if they weren't measured correctly when the guys went to pick them up. Tuxedo Park did fix all of their tuxedos, but I think it's kind of ridiculous that almost all of them had to have major adjustments. When we put a deposit down on my husband's tuxedo, they told us that for the fitting, all of the men that are renting a tuxedo get to come in and they cater pizza, paninis or wings for them. My husband said that all that was there were drinks and chicken rolls. I think that was false advertisement because they explained it to be a bigger deal than it was. Overall, I think the suits looked nice and all of the ties were the same just in different colors, which I thought was a nice touch. However, I'm sure you could get the same quality suits elsewhere with better service.
DJ- A++++++
Body Rock: Rich S was my DJ and Rich J was my MC- I don't even know where to begin to describe how amazing they were! We had all age groups at my wedding, and every single person was on the dance floor or dancing at their tables. They were fun, attentive, responsive and SO many of my guests raved to me about how great they were. When I say they went above and beyond for us, I mean it! I did most of my meetings with Rich S and I don't have enough good things to say about him. You always wonder about the music at your wedding and if your crowd will be having fun. There is no doubt in my mind they all had a BLAST. People I never imagined would be dancing were up on the dance floor with me and my groom. They really listened to what we wanted and the music was absolutely perfect. Body Rock was one of the best decisions we made and we still keep in touch with our DJ!
Florist- A+
Pedestals: My flowers were absolutely breathtaking and I received so many compliments on my arrangements! They really did a wonderful job making my vision come true, and Joseph S went above and beyond to create exactly what I dreamed of for my wedding. He was accommodating and it was clear he knew what he was talking about. The people who delivered my flowers were so responsive and came over to the hotel we were at next door just to show them to me before they brought them to my bridal suite at my reception hall. When we said we wanted some more flowers on the cake, they did it immediately and were so friendly. The only 'issue' I had (which had to do with the type of flower itself) was that my gardenias in my bouquet started turning brown around the edges. The day of, I asked them to trim some areas where the petals were turning, but it seemed they didn't. That being said, I wanted the gardenias (it's our 'family flower') so it was a risk I knew I was taking. In the pictures, you couldn't even tell. I loved using Pedestals and I would recommend them to anyone who asked!!!
Hair- A
Robin: I used someone my MIL is friends with so I was skeptical at first, but I wanted to save money. I had 2 trials with her (she only charged me for one). The first trial was to get the idea of what hairstyle I wanted. The second was to try out the actual hairstyle. After the second trial, I was a little nervous because she didn't do the hairstyle full out, she just gave me an 'idea'. I left wondering what my hair would look like, but all she could say was that she was going to make me look like a rockstar. I have to say that my hair was beyond what I could have ever imagined. She did hair for our moms, my flower girl and my 3 bridesmaids (plus me) so I was impressed with how fast she worked and got us done with plenty of time to spare. Her personality is a lot to handle but all of my girls loved their hair!
Makeup Artist- A+++
Christy Ann Cosmetics: Christy Ann Cosmetics is worth every penny! I was lucky enough to have Christy and Amber for my wedding day and they were SO amazing! Even before my wedding, Christy was very responsive and answered my questions promptly. The day of they came early, they were friendly and they gave everyone exactly what they wanted (and then some!) They helped ease my nerves the morning of my wedding just by talking with them. Our makeup was flawless and stayed on the entire day. I was even able to take pictures after my wedding was over because my makeup didn't move. I really felt as beautiful as I had dreamed about my whole life.
Bridal Gown/MOB Gown- A+, Bridesmaids Gowns- B
Bridal Reflections- Massapequa: My first visit, my consultant Darnell was absolutely amazing to work with. She was patient, sweet and creative. She spent 3 hours with us! She really took ideas from the pictures I showed her and threw in some of her own ideas as well. Being that I'm short, I fell in love with a gown but the fitted part came down too low on me so it didn't look right. She hiked up the middle of the dress and called the designer- they ended up making a custom dress for me!! It was a close call though because I received a phone call from them weeks later saying it couldn't be done. I was extremely upset because I wouldn't have picked that dress then and had my heart set on it. The owner, Roselynn, did an amazing job at amending the situation and spoke with the designer's rep to make sure it was done for me. They had to cut 5-6 inches out of the middle so I was extremely nervous for my first fitting. It fit me like I glove and I barely needed alterations. Our seamstress Zizi was unbelievable. The lace got shipped separately since the dress was custom, so Zizi worked with me to put it on meticulously so that it was flattering to my body. She really knows what she's doing!! She even fitted my mom's dress, who was told by the other seamstress that some things couldn't be done. For example, my mom had a train and the other seamstress said she couldn't keep it. Well Zizi made sure that wasn't the case. My mom's dress was beaded from head to toe and was champagne with sheer taupe chiffon over it. Stunning! We also got my headpiece and veil there which were so beautiful and they discounted both since we purchased everything from them. They were great quality and they had a great selection that I felt I had so much to choose from.
The only issues I had was with my bridesmaid dresses. They all had issues at their fittings and the day of my wedding, one of my bridesmaids dresses was still too long and another didn't fit well at the top. I also felt like the people at the bridesmaid/family dress part of the store weren't too friendly. Whenever I came in for a fitting I didn't feel welcomed. Usually once you kept trying to talk to them they would become more personable. However, it was uncomfortable at times. Bridal Reflections made my dreams come true. I felt like a princess and I can't tell you how many people swooned over my dress! Thank you ladies!
Flower Girl Dress- A (see picture above)
www.nancyaugust.com: I hate buying clothes online because it's impossible to tell how it will fit/what it will look like on. We looked at Burlington for a flower girl dress and we looked a few other places too. Nothing had what I wanted, which was a lavender/lilac dress to fit in with my purple theme. Call me selfish but I really wanted to be the only one wearing white! I knew matching the color of the bridesmaids dresses would be too difficult! I heard about Nancy August because my friend told me that a lot of pageant girls get their dresses from this site. The prices were SO reasonable and they had so many beautiful dresses to choose from. When the dress came in, the straps didn't fit well so we had to have those tailored. My flower girl is hard to fit because she is so skinny but tall so we had to send back a few dresses until we found one that fit her body the best. In the end, it was exactly what I pictured and the site had so many great choices!
Wedding Cake- A+
Francesco’s Bakery- Hicksville: My coworker used them for her cake since she also got married at Fox Hollow and it was included in the Somerley package. I had heard stories that her cake fell apart on the plates and her guests said it looked like the cake was thrown around by the time it got in front of them. With this in mind, I voiced my concern and they assured me it wouldn’t be an issue. I went with the fondant upgrade at a good price to not only prevent this problem, but I just think it makes the cake look flawless. We were there for about an hour with Chrissy and we scrolled through pictures, sketched designs and enjoyed a delicious tasting. We also met Francesco and he was really personable and funny. My cake was GORGEOUS and I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful cake than what we got. The bottom/2nd layers were hexagon and the top/3rd layers were circle. It really added dimension to the cake and made it so unique.
Photo Booth- Quality A+, Service C+
Ovations: I think favors are kind of played out and I honestly didn't want to spend money on something people would throw out. The favors that are nice are so expensive. We heard about Ovations through our DJ. We chose the open air photobooth that's not an actual booth so that more people could fit in a picture. I think we got the most compliments from our wedding day on the photo booth and how much fun everyone had doing it. The props were adorable, they gave us copies of all pictures that were taken on a flash drive, and they made a guest book out of all the pictures that were taken. Guests glued it in the book and wrote next to their picture. I can't tell you how hilarious our book is and what a nice memory we now have. My only issue with them was the lack of responsiveness. At the bottom of the photo strip is a 'logo' that had your name and date. I emailed them multiple times to ask when we could pick ours out and we never heard back. I had to call a few times to ever get an answer and I don't think they would have called us to do it had we not pursued it. The guest book wasn't the one we picked out, but it did fit our theme so I wasn't really upset. The attendant that day came up to my husband right after our first dance and said 'Umm you have a balance.' I totally understand that he needs to get paid, but I really thought this was tacky considering our balance was extremely minimal and the service hadn't even been provided yet (and nothing in our contract said the balance had to be paid before the photobooth could be used). I'm pretty sure he could have found a better time to approach us or asked our maitre d' to handle it before coming over to my husband pretty much right after we come in the room sticking his hand out for $.
Invitations- C+
Dazzling Affairs: Definitely my least favorite vendor. I have to say that I was disappointed with my invitations. I loved the style of them, but my problem was the font. It was way too small and the gold writing on dark purple was hard to read. I received no feedback about this possibly being an issue, nor was I told that the font would possibly be too small (since she chose the font size to begin with). They kept telling me that because I approved the proof, it was my error. I get this, but how are you supposed to tell from a computer screen what they are going to look like when they are in your hand? One of them was even printed upside down. I took them home, which was definitely my fault, but in the moment your mind is racing and I would advise future brides to really sit with the invitations and look it over thoroughly before you take them home. The promo I booked with allowed me to receive laser calligraphy which was nice. However, one of the envelopes was wrinkled up, and 2-3 others had typos. They did allow me to have them fixed and did the calligraphy for some additional envelopes for people we decided to add to our guest list. Overall, I spent a lot of money there and I wish I hadn't spent as much on invitations as I did considering how they turned out.
Wedding Shoes- A+
Rhea Nicols: I looked everywhere for my shoes and I couldn’t find anything that fit what I wanted: DSW, zappos, macys, Lord & Taylor- you name it I looked there. I went into Rhea Nicols on a whim and I found shoes I loved. They provided me with tons of pads for the inside just in case I needed since my shoes were peep toe. I thought the price was great and my shoes were exactly what I wanted. The woman who helped me was so excited to be able to help me find shoes for my wedding day.
Videographer- A
Ray Estrada: We booked Ray through Lighthouse Photography when they had just contracted him in so we got his services at a steal. He trained AJ Ingoglia so we felt lucky to use him. The day of he wasn't intrusive and we barely knew he was there! We haven't gotten our vignette back, but all of the ones we have seen on Lighthouse's vimeo really capture the essence of a wedding.
Photographer- A++++
Lighthouse Photography: I always knew that I wanted to spend the most money on photography. Photos are what you're left with once the day is over. We looked at a lot of different places and I felt as if we were being ripped off. I know photography isn't cheap but no way was I paying $6,000 just for photos and only one parent album (which one place quoted us at). The second we walked into Lighthouse, I knew we had to use them. Monica is so sweet and made it obvious that they really care about the quality of our pictures, not the money. We really wanted Florio because that's who everyone recommended but 2 years before our wedding date he was already booked. They assured me I would love the other photographer they had in mind for our wedding, Joe Chahwan, but I was a little apprehensive. I looked at Joe's photography blog and they were so right. We wanted a mixture of photojournalistic and traditional shots, and to see how creative Joe is was really exciting for us. Monica assured us that if we used him for our engagement shoot and didn't like him, she would work with us to make us happy. We did our engagement shoot at DUMBO in Brooklyn and he really used the space to optimally. Meaning, he didn't just shoot us in front of a tree and call it a day. We did shots by the bridge, in the park, stepping on rocks in the water, etc. He was so imaginative and we couldn't have been happier. For our wedding day, he arrived promptly on time. It was definitely overwhelming being pulled all over the place to do wedding pictures. So much is going on already that it's chaotic, and then to have to pose for pictures isn't easy on the day of. Just when he could tell I was getting overwhelmed, he would turn his camera around to show me a picture he took and kept saying 'See? It will all be worth it.' He really put me at ease. We had the best assistant in the world, Kurt. My family is not easy and I was definitely battling anxiety the day of, and Kurt was behind me every step of the way fixing my dress and getting everyone together for pictures. If I needed anything, he helped me no questions asked. He was easy to talk to and made sure that every one of my pictures was posed to perfection. We had such an amazing team we couldn't have asked for more. After our wedding, Monica has emailed me within 24 hours of me contacting her answering any questions or concerns I have had. The picture quality is unbelievable and I have no idea how I'll narrow it down to pick pictures for our album (which is an awesome 'problem' to have)!
Card Box- A
Etsy (astylishdesign): She really accommodated what I wanted and made sure that the card box was exactly what I described. I paid almost $90 for it and I feel like it was a little pricey considering it was a cardboard box that was paper-mache’ed, but you can tell she really put time into it. It’s smooth (for the most part), hand-painted, she put a double layer of ribbon and lace around the edge of the box cinched in the middle with a rhinestone broach, rhinestones around the lid and had our names put on by the slot.
Table numbers/holders- B
Etsy (ELDNYC): The rhinestone holders are mesh material, which it didn't say on the listing, so they were falling over once I put the table number cards in them. Our maitre d' had to lean them against our centerpieces for them to stand. The seller was great in refunding me quickly for the price of the holders and they were really responsive. However, it was NOT worth the money I paid- and they weren’t cheap. They offered me replacement stands free of charge, but they were metal or plastic so I didn't find them appealing at all for my wedding tables. The table number cards are nice and have a few Swarovski crystals on them, but the stands for them were not at all effective.
Etsy maid of honor bracelet (DebbyHoffmanBridal)- A+
Totally affordable and the bracelet was stunning! I also waited a little too long to purchase it and Debby had it shipped by the next day. It was sparkly, elegant, well-made and she wrapped it so nicely that it was ready to be given as a gift. She even included a hand-written note appreciating my business, which I thought was a great touch. I would definitely recommend using her for bridesmaid and/or bridal jewelry.
The Knot Wedding Shop- A
Coasters: I had them put at each place setting under their toasting champagne glass and they were a hit. They were very simple but it added a personalized touch to the wedding. Everyone loved them!
Embroidered flower girl bag: One side said flower girl and the other side had her name. It was so adorable and my flower girl was so excited to get her own “purse”. She’s 6 so it was the perfect size for her.
DIY Projects-
Day-Of Timeline: I made it on Microsoft Word and can send anyone the template if they’d like it. I felt like spending money on that was silly so I printed them out, made a packet out of it and gave it to everyone (bridal party and family) at the rehearsal dinner. I put in the processional order and gave them some “day-of” tasks, such as getting Starbucks, keeping track of marriage license etc. My friends and family got a kick out of it!
Michaels: Flower girl basket for petals, place cards, rhinestones for place cards, OOT bags, MR & MRS letters for B&G table
OOT Bags: I bought plain white bags at Michael’s and glued on a poem/picture of us that I threw together on Microsoft Word and printed out. I bought everything that went in at the dollar store or Bed, Bath & beyond. I made one for the few kids we had too, which had a coloring book, crayons, snacks, bubbles and cute Pez characters.

Loved this review! I was at a wedding at Fox Hollow in December 2012 and the MC was also Richard J. He was great! Beautiful pictures. I am in love with your cake! My reception is at Chateau Briand and I believe they use the same bakery so I will show them a picture of your cake!
