My VERY LONG review of our 3/8/14 wedding at Westbury Manor (FM Entertainment, Red Sweatshirt, Capture the Moment, Trans Star, Jacqueline Nicole, Kim Castro, Afresh Approach, Francesco's)
I apologize for being long-winded! Thanks for reading my review! I will post pro pics once I get them. :)LIW: A++++
Wedding planning has been a rollercoaster for me—with many highs and lows and, lots of laughs and a few screams along the way. Through it all, the ladies on LIW have been a great source of support, advice and camaraderie and I am very grateful to have found this website. I selected the majority of my vendors based on reviews found here or events hosted by LIW where I was able to meet the vendors and other brides who have used them. I’ve made some wonderful friends here and am grateful for the experience. And, I was even fortunate enough to win some LIW contests which were so much fun! So, thank you LIW!
Engagement: I am not going to rate this except to say that it was perfect in my eyes. He wowed me and surprised me, and also reminded me of why I fell head over heels for him in the first place. We got engaged in Dallas, TX, where we used to live—hence the matching TX map tattoos above our elbows LOL.
E-ring appraisal: Jewelry Judge – A+++
For $90, this man told me EVERYTHING about my stone. He never looked at the GIA report I brought with me, yet was able to describe everything in the report almost verbatim. Getting an independent appraisal eased my mind and made getting jewelry insurance a breeze. (FYI - I used Perfect Circle insurance, which was fast, easy and cost way less than adding the ring to my homeowner’s insurance policy. For $15,000 worth of coverage on my e-ring and wedding band, I’m paying $230 a year.)
Save The Dates: Vistaprint – B
I was able to use a Groupon and got my postcard size magnets, envelopes, and round sticker seals for less than $1 per set. The magnet was a decent quality (a little thin), but the envelope was very thin. Overall, I was satisfied with them—especially since I was able to mail them with a regular postage stamp.
Invitations: Wedding Paper Divas – A
I had a very good experience with WPD. I couldn’t justify the cost of getting custom invitations from an etsy vendor, so I bought them online…and loved them! Sure, it took a little more work and careful instructions on my part (the designer messed up one of the font colors and had to give me a 3rd proof for free), but they did a great job. The invitations looked great and, including postage ($0.66 per invite), I spent about $4.25 per invitation (including flat invite on shimmer paper, RSVP card on shimmer paper, pearl lined inner envelope, and standard outer envelope).
My Wedding Band: Diamond Roof (Tri County) – B
Sam was friendly and helpful and reasonably priced. He custom made my wedding band, based on a picture I’d shown him of a Simon G I had fallen in love with. It didn’t end up looking exactly like the inspiration ring, but it’s beautiful and cost $1,000 less than the designer ring—and has a higher TCW than the designer ring—and he was able to guarantee (in writing) that the diamonds would match the color and clarity of my e-ring. His cousin cleaned and polished my platinum e-ring (while I watched) and all the jewelry me, my MOH and my Mom were wearing that day for free. My only complaint is that Sam closed up shop without any notice or a goodbye. I heard he moved to Australia. Anyhow, I had intended to buy Jason’s wedding band from him, but had to go elsewhere when Diamond Roof disappeared.
His Wedding Band: Titanium Kay – B
Jason loves to shop online. He ordered a simple white Cobalt ring and was happy with it. The company sent us someone else’s order by mistake (because they had the same first name and also live in NY), but they expedited a replacement ring once we notified them of the mixup.
Bridal Shower: Jonathan’s (Garden City Park) – A-
The food was excellent and the service was attentive. However, I felt like the amount of food provided for the price could have been a little better. Their champagne punch was delicious and so was their carrot cake! I had a wonderful time at my shower and upgraded this review from a B+ to an A- because we went into overtime when I was unwrapping the gifts and ended up staying for an hour past our contracted time—and they didn’t charge us for it or get bent out of shape about it. I really appreciated that because I hate to feel rushed.
Bachelorette Party: Novita (Garden City)/Zachary’s (East Meadow) – B/D respectively
The wine selection was excellent and the food was pretty good at Novita. I appreciated that, since it was snowing, they didn’t give us a hard time about people showing up late for our reservation, or that we took 3 hours to have dinner and it was a Saturday night during Valentine’s Day weekend. But, I felt like our party was pretty cramped and they probably could have sat us at a bigger table. Overall, I enjoyed dinner and drinks there. Unfortunately, our next stop was Zachary’s—a club that exemplifies all that I dislike about Long Island. The bouncers and management took themselves way too seriously and seemed to think that the club was going to be packed when, by 1:00am, it was still half-empty. My MOH had made a reservation and used a promotion from their website which said we’d get in free, get a VIP table, and a free bottle of vodka. They didn’t want to give us the table at first, and told us we couldn’t get the vodka because we had less than 10 people (one girl dipped out after dinner because of the weather and one stayed home because she was sick). We ended up being told that we would share the VIP section with another party. But then, that party never showed up. And the waitress who was bringing our drinks kept leaving the velvet rope down so couples would come into our section (where our bags, drinks and party stuff was left as we danced) and we’d get back to our table and have to watch them sucking face and dry humping each other in our VIP section when they didn’t belong there. There were so many O-L-D cougars and even older men (I am 38 and I felt young) there and the music started off in the 1970’s and eventually came around to the modern day—right before we decided it was time to call it quits. My girls made it fun for me no matter what, but I would never recommend this place to another bride…unless she was over 50.
My Dress: David’s Bridal (Massapequa) – A (dress purchasing experience) / D (alterations)
After reading a lot of horror stories about DB, I was scared to look there. But, I found the Massapequa location to be very easy to deal with. The attendant who helped me find my dress (Theresa) was wonderful, friendly, and patient. And I got my dress for a great price—then found out it had been discontinued 5 days later—and DB adjusted the price for me, saving me over $100 on the dress. (FYI - I bought my dyeable wedge heels from DB online the day after Xmas for under $20 and they dyed them at the Westbury location for $5.) I went back to DB Massapequa for alterations—and that turned out to be a mistake. All I needed was a simple bustle and some removable spaghetti straps sewn in ($90). The seamstress seemed to “yes” me to death, which made me nervous. Two weeks before my wedding, I went to pick up my dress and the bustle was nothing like what I discussed with the seamstress—and didn’t even remotely resemble the picture I had shown her. It was awful and did not look professionally done at all. The removable spaghetti straps the seamstress had suggested to me were permanently sewn in. And the dress wasn’t even pressed! After about 90 minutes of arguing with the alterations manager, Maria, I was told that they could not accomplish the simple bustle in my photo. So, Maria added more loops and buttons (more $) and pinned up a “modified French bustle.” Which looked nothing like what I had envisioned, but I agreed to just let it go. I was able to pick my dress up a week before our wedding. The bustle looked ok, but overall the experience added more aggravation to an already stressful and busy time.
BM/MOH Dresses: Burton’s (Melville) – F
If there was a lower grade than F, I would give it to Burton’s. I would not send my worst enemy there for a dress. I can’t speak about their flowers (which we quoted there and they weren’t the cheapest or the nicest) and am just reviewing the dresses. We ordered the BM and MOH dresses at Burton’s because they had the best prices on the Bill Levkoff styles they’d chosen. They were nice enough and easy to deal with when we first went to try the dresses on and leave the deposit. This was back in July of 2013. When none of the girls received a call from Burton’s by Christmas, my MOH called them and was told that the dresses wouldn’t be in until the end of January because they were only ordered at the beginning of January 2014—over 6 months after we ordered them. They said someone would call and notify my MOH by the end of January so that the girls could come in for their fittings. But, by Valentine’s Day, no one had called. And this really stressed me out, being that my wedding was only 3 weeks away and the girls still had no dresses and no fittings. So, my MOH called again and was told that the dresses STILL weren’t in on 2/17. So, 18 days until my wedding and there were still no dresses. I was livid. Exactly 2 weeks before my wedding, my girls finally got their dresses. The owner was not apologetic or friendly, but she did do the alterations on the same day and the girls (after spending their Saturday morning and afternoon waiting around), got to leave with their dresses. I would never deal with Burton’s again—not even if the dresses were free!
Tuxedos: Foresto’s (Mineola) – A
Domenic was very helpful when we went in to select the tux. Their prices were a little high, but I didn’t mind paying extra for good service and the promise of quality alterations. He made it “quick and painless” for the groom, and that’s what was important to me. The guys looked great in their tuxes, everything fit well, and it was a good experience.
Venue: Westbury Manor – B
Westbury Manor is a beautiful and charming venue and overall we had a great experience there. We (the girls) had been running an hour late, which cut into the 2 hours WM allows you to arrive before the ceremony to take pictures, get settled, and rehearse. We were going to do a “red carpet champagne toast” with the bridal party girls as we got out of the limo (thrown in for free by Trans Star limo), but there was a horde of guests leaving from a daytime event waiting for the valet and thereby not leaving us any room in the front of the manor, so we were rushed inside instead. This was the first time I regretted not booking at a one-event-at-a-time venue—and it was the first of many times I regretted running late! We were taken straight to the photo studio, where we took pictures until the ceremony began—since we were running behind, we weren’t able to rehearse in the ceremony space and had to wing it…with some definite hiccups. I had asked to have some calamari (J’s favorite) and snacks served in the bridal suite, but they were set up in the photo studio so we never really got to use the bridal suite for much at all. By the time we got to the photo studio, the calamari was cold, so I didn’t eat it. Jason had some when it was hot and said it was good. Our bridal attendant, Gianna, was very sweet, and went downstairs (we were on the 3rd floor) to get us drinks. That girl worked her butt off the whole night. We barely saw our Maitre‘d, Sandra, and weren’t as impressed with her, but Gianna was amazing and treated us like royalty. After the ceremony (which took place in the room where we later had the reception—which was also problematic for logistics and caused a lot of waiting around for our florist—and a big delivery/setup fee), we were taken back to the photo studio to take more pictures. Gianna brought us some CH food, but there were so many things we never got to see or try—including the mashed potato bar and smokehouse station upgrades we were so excited for. Our guests raved about the CH though. My BFF mentioned that they didn’t pass all the hors d’ourves they were supposed to serve (no beef wellington or brie with raspberry tartlet, etc.) and I had specifically asked our BM and Maitre’d to be sure everything was served since I’d read a review that had complained about that. So, I was annoyed that they passed rice balls that weren’t even on the hors d’ourves list we went over at our “menu meeting” and skipped items that we were promised. At dinner, we had the filet mignon entrée and, unlike the one at our tasting, it was cooked perfectly. The cake cutting happened pretty late, so many of our guests had already gone home. Therefore, they also missed the awesome cordial bar (edible chocolate shot glasses!), the gelato dessert, and the mini cupcakes! As you can tell from this review, food was very important, if not the most important thing to me when planning our wedding. I’m glad our guests got to enjoy it, but this was the least I’ve ever eaten at a social function. Overall, the staff at WM is on point, but there were a few times when I felt a communication breakdown. For example, we had wanted to do an anniversary dance and present our FG’s grandparents (whose anniversary was that day) with flowers instead of doing a bouquet toss. Our MD had taken the flowers and put them on the gift table but didn’t tell me where they were or what time we were doing the dance/presentation. So, when it came time to give the flowers away, I couldn’t find them—or my MD. The FG’s grandma didn’t know we were doing it then either (since no one told her what time it was happening) and was out in the hallway with the FG. So, I lead the anniversary dance with her husband in her place while holding her flowers. It was embarrassing. The photobooth debacle was another instance of miscommunication. I was told all along, by 2 different banquet managers, that my friend (our officiant, who has his own photobooth) could drop the booth off at 3:30pm. Three days before my wedding, when my friend was sending the insurance certificate to WM, he was told that he can only bring the booth in after 6:00pm—because they had booked a daytime affair upstairs and the people wouldn’t be gone until 6:00. But, since he was officiating, by 6:00 he would be in a suit and rehearsing with the bridal party. So, there was no way he could carry a 400-lb photobooth upstairs (there’s no elevator or wheelchair ramp) even if the groom and groomsmen helped him at the last minute—and they wouldn’t let him leave the booth there overnight—again, because they had another party coming. So, my friend and groom would have had to stay sober all night to carry the photobooth downstairs at 12:30am when the reception was over. It was too much hassle—and WM never told me about all of this when I had brought the photobooth up with them several times. So, at the last minute, I needed to shop around for a photobooth—stress I didn’t need so close to the event. My mom ended up adding an open air type photobooth onto our DJ package and saved the day. But, again, it was an instance of misinformation between WM’s BM’s and us. There were several, but this was the most aggravating. I don’t want to give the impression that WM didn’t host a great party or provide good food and service—they did. And some of our troubles stemmed from us running late with hair and makeup. I am just trying to illustrate the small problems we encountered and challenges of a multi-event venue so other brides can learn from our experience.
DJ: FM Entertainment – A+
Frank, the owner, was our one-man MC/DJ and he did a great job. He played the music for our ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, and also provided our photo booth (with attendant, props, unlimited pics, scrap book, and a CD of all the pics). We gave Frank and extensive play list (because we asked our guests for song requests on the RSVP cards) and he played the majority of our requests while adding in a few songs to get people dancing. He was professional and fun without being cheesy and we really liked his personality. His pricing was excellent and his communication was on point. I would not hesitate to recommend FM to other brides.
Photographer: Red Sweatshirt – A
I fell in love with Scott’s style (from stalking his facebook and blog) and booked him on the spot at our first meeting. I never even met with any other photographers. In addition to being talented, it was important to me that our photographers were personable—Jason and I are laid-back and camera shy, but we like to laugh and have a good time. You spend the whole day with your photographers, so it was so nice that we got along with Scott and his assistant, David. They were not intrusive or pushy, and gave us a good amount of direction, which we desperately needed. Since we ran late with hair and makeup, we weren’t able to take any outdoor daylight pictures. But, I feel like Scott and David were still able to take some great shots. Scott posted a few beautiful teaser pics within 48 hours of the wedding, which I appreciated. The only drawback to Red Sweatshirt is that it can take up to 6 months to see our edited pictures. I am ok with that because Scott said he’s going to color correct each photo and, from what I’ve seen of his work, he is meticulous. To me, that is worth waiting for.
****UPDATE 11/7/14: After the wedding, communication went downhill and we've had a lot of problems reaching Scott. It's been 8 months since our wedding and I still don't have the raw images he promised me. I have seen my online gallery, but am disappointed overall in the pictures that were taken and the customer service and lack of communication we've received since the wedding. Also, Scott may color correct photos, but the touch ups he had discussed with us when we first met are not actually included as he had led me to believe--unless we buy an album. Another observation, some brides seem to get dozens of teaser photos and others get one or two. So, if you are not one of his favorites (i.e. gorgeous), you might not see much of your wedding pics until 6 months after the wedding. If I had to rate Red Sweatshirt today, my review would be a lot different. :(
Videographer: Capture The Moment – A+++
Wow! I got my Highlight Reel less than 2 weeks after our wedding--and it was awesome!! Jessica (the owner) is super nice, has excellent prices, and is great with communication. Our videographer for the day of was Rob, who was very much a “fly on the wall,” very professional and you barely knew he was there. I will update once we have our full length video, but for now, I give CTM an A+++ for quality, service and price.
****UPDATE: Jessica delivered our fully edited video very quickly and ahead of schedule. She did a great job with the editing, however there were some requests I had made that Rob didn't fulfill. Jessica did her best to make it right, and I appreciate that. My advice to other brides is to give lots of direction to your videographer on the day of!
Limo: Trans Star Exec – A
Mary from Trans Star was a sweetheart and gave us a fair price. For an 8-person limo for 3.5 hours, we paid $350 and it included tax and gratuity. The driver was on time and personable even though he had to wait over an hour outside my mother’s house because we were running late getting ready. He was going to give us a red carpet champagne toast for free, but there wasn’t enough time. Once we got to the venue, we were immediately whisked away for pictures. I would not hesitate to recommend Trans Star. The limo was clean and nice inside, the driver was well dressed and professional, and the price and service were good.
Makeup: Jacqueline Nicole Cosmetics – A+++++
I don’t have enough superlatives to adequately describe Jackie’s work, professionalism, and demeanor. I had two makeup trials with her before booking (one was free through an LIW promo) and knew there was no one else I wanted to do my makeup for our big day. Jackie is so friendly and warm-hearted that she puts you at ease almost immediately…which was no easy feat since my girls and I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis and most of us had ever had professional makeup applications before. So, we were nervous and critical. On the day of, Jackie drove from Nesconset to Elmont to do our makeup—without a travel fee. She was punctual and got set up quickly. We added an extra person (my mom) at the last minute, which made us run late getting ready, but it was worth it IMO. Jackie made us all look and feel beautiful. She got my mom to try full makeup (at first, she just wanted foundation and blush)—which she has never done before and was really scared to try. She didn’t want to “look like a clown.” So many of our guests said my mom looked gorgeous, like she had 20 years removed from her face. Jackie even got her to try false lashes—which looked amazing! It meant so much to me to see my mom so radiant and happy and confident with her appearance. Jackie is a perfectionist and she takes her time, but the result is outstanding. She nailed the vintage glam look I was going for. And she was so fun to have with us as we got ready. She stayed with us until we got into the limo and drove off. As some of you know, I had won free airbrush makeup (for the bride) through an LIW contest, but I would gladly have paid to have Jackie do my makeup. And at $100 per person for airbrush makeup (I paid for my girls and mom), she was more than worth it. I can’t praise her enough—she’s a great vendor and a wonderful person and I just love her!
Hair: Kim Castro (of Bedford & Mane in Bellmore) – A+++
Kim is an awesome person and a talented hair stylist. She really did a beautiful job on our hair and gave us the retro look we were going for. She traveled from Bellmore to Elmont on the day of without a travel fee and arrived early so she could discuss what the girls were envisioning for their hairstyles. Kim owns a new salon called Bedford & Mane (and it’s beautiful), so I went there for my hair trial (I also had a makeup trial with her) and again on the day of our legal marriage ceremony (3 days before our reception) so Kim could dye my hair and put extensions in for me. My hair is super thin and frizzy/curly, so it’s not easy to work with. But, Kim worked some hair magic on me and made it look like my hair was thick and full. Like me, Kim is a self-professed “crazy dog lady” and was so much fun to talk to during the trial and on the day of. Since we were a pretty low-maintenance bunch of girls, we gave her wide latitude and asked her to just use her judgment and creativity…and her interpretation of what we wanted was perfect.
Flowers: Ultima Florals (Jackson Heights, Queens) – A++
When I first started looking at flowers, I didn’t think they were that important to me. But, as I met with more and more florists, I realized that I was agonizing over flowers way more than anything else for my wedding. I met with more florists than venues, spent more time on my “vision” than on choosing my dress, and on the day of, seeing my bouquet was the first time I cried. Flowers were super important to me, but I just didn’t realize it until they were staring me in the face. George, the owner of Ultima Florals, is a friend of one of my close friends, and came highly recommended. He was patient, kind, and very passionate about what he does. After several meetings (and a lot of changes made by me and my indecision), George executed my vision to perfection and I couldn’t have been happier with the flowers. He even made the groom 2 “backup” boutonnieres in case they got crushed from hugging guests (and because I couldn’t decide on whether I wanted white or blush or peach ranunculus lol). He and his assistant arrived very early at the venue and he pitched in and helped with the setup of our ceremony and reception room. His gave me a fair price and excellent service. George is a true gentleman and an artist and I’m so happy to have met him.
Wedding Cake: Francesco’s – C
After reading several negative reviews of Francesco’s, I almost went elsewhere for our cake. A basic 3-tier cake with buttercream scroll design was included in our reception package, but I wanted a different design so I paid a $50 upgrade charge. They made the cake skinnier and turned it into 4 tiers at my request and the cake looked beautiful…very close to my inspiration pic. Sandy did our initial tasting and he was very pleasant. However, the cake pieces we tasted were stale and I was disappointed. Still, we took a chance based on positive LIW reviews that were more recent than the negative ones. I later found out that Sandy is no longer with Francesco’s which is why no one ever called me to confirm my cake when we got close to the wedding date. At this point, it was too late in the race to change horses. The cake tasted fine, not amazing, but not bad either. It was vanilla with vanilla custard and raspberry filling. The cake itself was very dry (as if maybe it was frozen and thawed) but the filling was ok. Even though the cake was made skinnier and taller, we still had the entire bottom layer and top layer leftover at the end of the night. If I had to do it all again, I would have gone with a different bakery as I didn’t even get excited about the leftovers.
Cupcakes: Kupcakes with a K – A
I met Kim from Kupcakes with a K at an LIW event and was able to taste some of her mini cupcakes. She was a fellow bride, planning her wedding, and was so friendly and enthusiastic that it made me want to find a way to incorporate her cupcakes into our wedding. Since we were a little worried about our wedding cake not being great, we ended up ordering 12 dozen mini cupcakes to be served during dessert. For me, the two standout flavors were vanilla with cookie dough filling/frosting, and red velvet with cream cheese filling/frosting. We also had chocolate with cannoli filling/frosting, rainbow cookie (almond cake with fudge frosting and a piece of rainbow cookie), vanilla with coconut frosting topped with shredded coconut, and chocolate with peanut butter filling/frosting. They were all good, but not as popular with the guests and we had a lot of leftovers. The mini cupcakes were $1 each and we rented her cupcake towers ($5 each) and paid for delivery ($10). I think the cupcakes were a nice addition to dessert, but wish I had gotten some takeout boxes for guests to take the leftovers home.
Favors: Afresh Approach – A
Jeanne and her husband were a pleasure to deal with and the truffles were delicious! We went with a white (cookie dough filling), milk (port wine filling), and dark (champagne filling) chocolate. Jeanne brought them to our venue on the day of and tied the bags of truffles (with navy ribbon) onto the bottles of prosecco I had purchased and delivered to the reception hall. The truffles cost $3.75 for 3 pieces (including the bag, ribbon, and delivery…I did not do favor tags) and were a hit with our guests.
