My 3/29/14 wedding at Thatched Cottage with reviews of F2B, Hidden Essence, Angela's Hair Design, Tommy's Tunes, Glam Me Up and more
I loved my wedding day, just thinking about it I get all teary eyed again. I was so stressed the 2 weeks before my wedding but I woke up the day before it remarkably calm. I was so excited to marry my amazing groom that I wasn't stressed at all. I didn't care about the weather, I wasn't anxious about the timing of the next morning. I had stressed for weeks about these things but in that moment I was too happy to be getting married and I'm really glad I was in such a good place because I enjoyed the day before my wedding so much and my wedding day was the most beautiful experience of my life to date. I did not care one bit that it rained on my wedding day, I had bought a cute umbrella in case that happened, I still got to do my reveal outside and to be honest, the grey skies made the candles of my centerpieces glow more in the room. Your day is what you make it, try to feel all the love of the day and that'll lift you right up. Also, some amazing vendors will do the trick so here we go ...Bridesmaid Cookies: The Sugar Chic A+
She’s wonderful. I used these to ask my bridesmaids to be in my wedding and she did such a great job with the cookies, even talking to me a little bit about what color works better in icing. She included a bonus bride cookie for me to eat…They were delicious; they were done when I needed them to be and I was so happy with her service.
Save the Dates-MagnetStreet: A+
Loved my Save the Dates! They were heart magnets. I found the website really easy to use and it made it quick and easy to design the magnet. I love that I could order Just One and see the proof of it in person as opposed to just on the computer. Plus I got a coupon code where you could get your Just One for free, so that worked out well. The magnets came quickly and were exactly what I wanted.
Bridal Shower-Tall Grass Golf & Country Club A+
My shower was amazing! This place did a beautiful job, it was a brunch. Everything was decorated in blue and silver, with snowflakes and ornaments as decorations. I had a wine wishing well where everyone bought me a bottle of wine, there was a slideshow with pictures of me and FH, the balloons had pictures of me and FH tied to the bottom and they had a hashtag set up for me! They organized some great games, my favorite being a trivia game about me and FH which was set up in the same style from an episode of Friends, The one with all the embryos for other Friend’s fanatics out there. The board was made to look just like the one in the episode with the same categories and even included a lightning round. Me, my friends and my family are all obsessed with Friends so this was perfect and we got such a kick out of it. Whichever table one got little bath and body stuff. It was perfect. There are pictures in one of my albums.
Bachelorette Party- McGuires Comedy Club/Brickhouse Brewery/The Emporium: A+
We got together at my mom’s house for drinks and food and games and then went to McGuire’s comedy club in Bohemia to see a comedian, after that we killed some time drinking at the Brickhouse until it made sense to head out to the club, The Emporium in Patchogue. I loved every place we went. I had a scavenger hunt where I had to take pictures of myself with things that began with the letters that would make up my new last name, we danced at the Emporium which was so fun. It was just a good fun drunken girl’s night out! We had a limo to take us around, it was from Elegant Limousines in Medford, and they were great. Our driver was helpful, limo was clean, and everything went fantastic!
Rehearsal Dinner-The Oar Steak & Seafood Grill : A+
I loved this place!!! The food was fantastic, they had a separate building from the main restaurant for the private party and I had such a blast. They were ready as soon as I got there, the room had a wonderful cozy feel, the drinks and food were amazing. Loved it and was very happy we decided to have our Rehearsal dinner here.
Photographer/Videographer/Photobooth-Fade to Black:
We immediately left our 1st meeting with Gil feeling like they were our photographer/videographer. We couldn’t have made a better decision. They were definitely one of my favorite vendors to work with. All the pics in this review are from them.
Engagement Photos: We took our engagement photos at The Bronx Zoo where we got engaged and got to meet our photographer Fil. Fil recently had knee surgery so Gil also came with him. Fil was fun to work with, Gil was a pleasure to be around as he was throughout the process and we couldn’t be happier with the pictures. We went on a Wednesday which was donation day so we only had to pay for parking and tolls. They beautifully captured us in a place that is so special. Photos are in my album.
Wedding Day: They were great the day of and my proofs were beautiful.
Photobooth… What a hit!! There was a line for it all night, it was free since we did our photo and video with them and it was awesome. We loved going through the book of the photostrips the next day and we used it as part of our favors. Amazing addition to our wedding, so happy we got it!
Favors-BuyBulkDisplays (ebay): A+
These were great! They were the magnetic kind so people could hang it on their fridge. They fit the photo strip perfectly, they were really cost effective and they came in a timely manner.
DJ-Tommy’s Tunes: A+
They were great! We loved our MC, Joe…he was awesome. He was dancing with my mom and my husband’s grandmother; they read the room really well and played the songs that were on my list. My sister enlisted their help for her maid of honor speech and they were right on top of it. They kept my wedding upbeat and they kept things flowing really well. There’s a reason they have such a great reputation, they’ve earned it. Definitely recommend them.
Florist-Hidden Essence: A+
Michelle was amazing. She was more affordable than the other florists we looked at, the sweetest person and she has a great reputation so it was an easy choice to book her and she certainly did not disappoint. Bouquets and bouts were delivered on time to me and my husband; the bouquets were gorgeous, exactly like I wanted. The centerpieces and ceremony arrangements were perfect, she completely bought my vision to life. She even paused while setting up the ceremony to help my mom get the boutonniere on my dad. Like I said, amazing. The first 2 photos below are one's Michelle took.
Cigar Roller-La Rosa Cubana: A+
So happy to be able to give this company such a high grade because I was definitely nervous given some poor reviews. We got married on my husband’s birthday so this was my gift to him. Their prices are unbeatable which is why I went with them. Booking was quick and easy. Paid with PayPal, got a proof of the cigar labels right away, Frank was super quick to get back to me, all was well. I had read some poor reviews but some of them seemed older and about things like the labels which weren’t a big deal to me. However, some more recent reviews came out about them not being on time or soliciting tips from guests and I got very concerned. I emailed Frank about a month before the wedding and expressed my concern and about my thoughts of switching to another company. He got back to me and said that they had some rollers recently who sullied their reputation and he would personally be assisting with my wedding and would give me a full refund if they messed up. I decided to take the chance and thankfully, they did not disappoint!! They were there on time for the cocktail hour, they were there for the full hour, the labels were correct and looked awesome, and everyone said they were friendly and that the cigars were great and really fresh! Me and my husband only saw them for a few minutes but we did get to stop and get his cigars and talk with the rollers for a second. I heard great things from my guests so I was a happy bride! Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of them but they were an awesome addition to our wedding!
Bridesmaid Dresses-Bridal Elegance: A
Buying…I picked 5 Bill Levkoff dresses in Euro Navy satin, they were all floor length. My sister picked hers first so that one was just for her as the MOH. The other girls then had their choice of whichever of the other 4 dresses they wanted but they all picked the same one. The price was great!! I really wanted to keep it under 200 which I was able to do handily. The service was mixed depending on who we were dealing with that day but overall buying and ordering was simple. They can be gruff at first but they soften. My cousin had an unpleasant interaction with them and one of the other girls said her dress size was way too big but overall it was good. Dresses were in on time and correct style/color which was most important
Alterations… 2 of my 4 bridesmaids and my MOH all live out of state so they just picked up their dresses and took them down where they lived to be altered. One of my BM’s who lives local had a poor experience with Bridal Elegance alterations in the past so she picked up her dress as well to be altered someplace different. So I only had one BM get alterations done here but hers went smoothly, they were done well and at a decent cost, she had no complaints.
Tuxes-Men’s Wearhouse: A
We used the Men’s Wearhouse in Patchogue at the Gateway Plaza. It was easy to set up, we went with Calvin Klein one button tuxes which looked great. Most of the guys were able to pick up their tuxes without a problem; however my dad’s tux had some problems like the pants not being long enough and the shirt being too tight. He was able to go back the next day and everything was fixed and fit correctly. Aside from that hiccup everything went smoothly and the problems were fixed quickly and easily.
Wedding Dress-Village Bridal: A+
Buying…I had a great experience here. The place was nice and well lit. My consultant was Chrissy. She did an excellent job pulling dresses that reflected the style of the photos I bought with me. The dressing rooms here are very small but I had enough room to get the dress off the hangar and step into it, then when I came out she clipped me up. The second dress I tried on was Sophia Tolli Semilla and I loved it. It has the lace and some satin and I felt really beautiful in it. I looked at some more dresses just to be sure and came back 2 days later and bought it.
Alterations…Perfect. The woman who did the alterations was very nice, there was a lot of lace and beadwork so I was concerned about the hem but you couldn’t even tell anything was done to it. That dress fit me like a second skin and I owe that to her. Wonderful job.
Veil- bellamerabridal.com: A+
I went to the village bridal to try on veils when my dress came in and fell in love with Ansonia veil style 200S but they wanted $250 for it which was more than I wanted to spend so I was going to go to Barron’s since everyone here raves about it and try to find something similar. I was looking for a picture of it to print up and bring with me when I came across Bella Mera Bridal’s website. They had my veil for $100, with free shipping and their wedding wire reviews were impeccable so I took a chance and I’m so glad I did. It shipped when they said it would, it arrived undamaged and in beautiful condition. So glad it worked out, they were quick to respond to my emails and I’m so happy to have the veil I fell in love with.
Hair-Angela’s Hair Design: A+
Angela is the best. If you’re thinking about using her, don’t hesitate, just book her. My wedding was at noon and I was doing a reveal beforehand which meant she had to be there at 4:30 in the morning. She arrived at my mom’s ready to rock and turned out beautiful work. All my girls loved their hair, it stayed great throughout the night, and she was a pleasure to have there in the morning. My best friend was one of my bridesmaids and is getting married in November and ended up booking her for her wedding after the experience at mine. Getting ready was one of my favorite parts of the day thanks to her and Kelly.
Make-up- Kelly from Glam Me Up: A+
She’s amazing. I’m not a big makeup person but I have bridesmaids that are and she catered to everyone and everyone loved her. My best friend is looking into using her too! What a nice and bubbly person to have around. It was super early but she was high energy and helped make my morning so relaxing. I had so much fun with her and she gave me a beautiful look for my wedding day that felt very natural. Her and Angela both worked efficiently as well, they were at my house on time and they were right on schedule. Everyone’s hair and makeup was done right when it should be and I owe them so many thank yous because they blew me away.
Engagement Ring/Wedding Bands-Gateway Jewelry Exchange- Ideal Jewelry by James: A+
My engagement ring was designed by my husband (I’m so proud he did such a great job) with a jeweler in the Attias Flea Market and when the flea market closed he moved to a different location, Gateway Jewelry Exchange in Patchogue. Ideal Jewelers, booth at the back right, he was fantastic! He did my wedding band which was a channel cut platinum ring and FH’s band. I’m so happy with the way they came out; I couldn’t imagine more perfect rings. I used a book (The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks) as a ring holder since I work in a library it seemed fitting. I cut out up to a nice passage in the book about what love is and then tied the rings with a ribbon. I decorated the outside with our initials and a couple of scrap book decorations.
Invitations-David’s Bridal: A+
You can see my invitation in the picture above of my engagement ring which is on top of it. I knew from the start I didn’t want to spend a lot on invitations and that I’d end up ordering them online. They just weren’t that important to me. David’s Bridal had great prices and some styles that I liked so I ordered numerous amounts of free samples until I figured out exactly what I wanted. I felt like our whole wedding to me was about simple but elegant and in the end found something that I thought reflected that. It does stink that they don’t give you a printed proof but they were always really nice when I had any concerns about answering my questions or finding me the right sample. I was blown away by the way it all came together!! They were perfect and all my nerves weren’t necessary because they did a fantastic job. Beautiful invites, great quality, not a lot of money…which is how I wanted it.
Hotel-Melville Marriott: A
They were easy to book with. I blocked off 20 rooms and added more later on. There was a mistake at one point where guests were told that there were no more rooms left when only 8 had been booked. I called and the problem was immediately rectified without a problem. Anytime I emailed for an updated room block list they got back to me very quickly and I was able to quickly and easily add rooms to the block via email whenever I needed. The rooms were great, the hotel is huge so family and friends were able to spread out and hang out at the hotel afterwards. They got all the OOT bags to people. Good experience.
Limo-Sir Oliver: A
I called around and emailed many limo companies, including the most popular ones on this site and for what I needed they gave me the best price. I just needed limos for the morning to take the groom and groomsmen from the hotel to the venue, and me and the bridesmaids from my mom’s to the venue. Limo’s were on time and clean. Our driver carried a million bags of me and all my girls out to the car before helping me into the limo. He was nice and helpful. We had a small problem with the heat/air conditioning in the car but nothing detrimental. It was still comfortable during the ride.
Bus-Tran-star Exec: A+
The closest hotel to my venue was 20 minutes away and we had a lot of people staying for a wedding that started at noon so it really wasn’t practical to have multiple runs of a smaller shuttle. This company had a great price for a 50 passenger coach bus to do one run from the hotel to the venue, and then take everybody back at 6 when it ended, including me, my husband and our bridal party. It worked out perfect. The bus was clean and comfortable, the driver was great and we had no issues. My guests were at my wedding on time and back to the hotel with no issue. Great price, great service.
Venue-Thatched Cottage: B
It pains me to give this grade, I wish I could say it was an A+. I loved this venue, it was small and intimate with a beautiful view. It felt elegant yet homey which is what felt like suited us. I’m sure by now most of you know that TC filed for bankruptcy in January which like many other brides elicited panic in me but we were so close to our wedding we had no choice but to go with the flow. Let me start with the good things and by saying my day was amazing. I loved my wedding, I had the best time, my issues with TC have to do with feeling that you should get what you pay for but did not affect the overall quality of my day which was the best day of my life. The place was beautiful, my reception space was set up perfectly and the food was delicious. They came around and offered everyone seconds for dinner, my maitr’d Sam was nice and the drinks were good. Food was bought up to us in the bridal suite at cocktail hour so we could eat a little bit before going down and doing all our hellos and I enjoyed sitting with a view of the water and eating with my new husband for about 20 minutes before going to cocktail hour. The cake was delicious and looked exactly like I wanted it to. I gave them a picture, requested a couple minor changes to what was shown in the picture and they delivered. It was marble cake with chocolate mousse on some layers and vanilla mousse on others and it was really yummy. Now onto the not so great things. When I booked I thought I would be the only event happening there but apparently there’s tricky word-play where it’s one wedding at a time and not one event at a time so there was a bridal shower going on at the same time as my wedding and it’s a smaller venue so I wasn’t happy about that. They treated me kind of like I was overreacting. Since it was raining on the day of my wedding I had to take pictures inside and that made it difficult because people were coming in and out of the lobby to set up for the bridal shower while we were trying to take pictures there. I guess I just noticed it a little more than I wanted to. That was a just a minor issue though. Next issue, I was assured that no matter when the ceremony ended, if it ended a little early or what not, cocktail hour would be ready to go. It was explained that me and my husband would be whisked away to the bridal suite so we could spend some time together and everyone else would head to the cocktail hour, it was explained this way to me several times and in exactly those words. My ceremony was inside in the chapel area due to rain. They apparently did not have enough chairs set up (I did not find this out until after the wedding), despite the fact that we actually had less people than we told them there would be, and they had to rush and add chairs to the front. We had 142 people and it was tight in that room, I was told at one point that room could hold 200 but I don’t see how and I would have been pissed if we had actually had that many and they couldn’t fit them. After the ceremony finished, the transition to cocktail hour was poor. They did not whisk us away, we went into the bridal suite and they shuffled our whole bridal party and parents in there with us as well, everyone else went downstairs to the lobby and ended up having to wait around there because the cocktail hour was not ready to go as was promised. So there were 140 people waiting in the lobby to get downstairs, they wouldn’t even let a groomsman down there to get something out of the groom’s room. They waited there for a good 10 minutes or so before people started being let down there, my dad had to go and complain. Once it was opened up then we finally had a chance to sit with each other but it was much more chaotic than it was supposed to be and I was assured it would be. It was towards the end of the cocktail hour that the roof in the lobby started to leak. It was raining in the lobby of my venue. They had to set up buckets on and around the piano to catch the water falling from the ceiling. We were lined up to go into the reception and I thought to myself, well that sux. Again, it didn’t affect my day but when you’re paying like $20,000 to a place you want to feel like you’re getting the best for your money. It was my husband’s birthday that day and they made a special small cake and we sang happy birthday to him. I had that cake made differently from our wedding cake; it was funfetti cake instead because he loves that. He blew out the candles but they never gave him a piece of his birthday cake so he didn’t even know that I had in made with different cake for him until I told him afterwards. I was awesome that they made him the cake though at no extra charge. We were supposed to be sent home with meals because we were under our minimum and because me and my husband knew we wouldn’t eat much but they didn’t send us home with anything. When my mom went 2 days later to pick up the top of my cake for us to freeze, they told her they didn’t have it. They found it after my mom got angry and they looked around more, they also gave us the birthday cake but obviously it won’t be as good as the day of. Also I was told that my event ending and another event starting after me would not be a problem and we wouldn’t even notice, it would be seamless and we wouldn’t feel rushed out. However as we were saying goodbyes and walking out they were bringing other tables in and out of there which made it difficult to get around to everyone and to get out of the room in general. I barely saw my bridal attendant the whole day aside from when she held my train for my reveal and when the matir’d told her to bring stuff up to bridal suite for us. Again, I loved my wedding day. The rain did not get us down, my reveal was amazing, my ceremony was incredible and intimate, I had so much fun with all the people I love most and the view there even on a rainy day was gorgeous. My food was delicious; I wish I had had room to eat more of it! Our mini-Viennese was delightful and I had so much fun drinking and dancing the day away. I just wish they would have come through on a few of the things they said they would. Also a note to brides getting married here, don’t let them push you into things. I felt like sometimes they were trying to bully me into doing things how they thought it should be done. For example, they told me I shouldn’t do a mojito for a signature drink, and that I should do a martini instead. I’m sure this is because it would have been easier for them but they tried to sell it to me like it would be better for my guests and imply that a mojito was a stronger drink than a martini. She strongly advised me 3 times to rethink it and put an * next to it on my day-of paperwork even when I told her I wasn’t changing my mind. I was told in the beginning they could do a mojito without a problem and that’s a drink with meaning for me and my husband so I wasn’t budging and it worked out great. Also they tried to tell me the way that we had the tables set up wouldn’t work well, that the one table would be out in the middle of nowhere so we should move it to the other side of the dance floor but that was all the grooms family and friends so we didn’t want to move a table of my parents friends that way plus I didn’t think was true that it would look out of place. We thought about it after we left and decided to keep it the way we had it and we were right, it looked great the way it was and people were still sitting near the people we wanted them to be near. I’m open to suggestions but it always felt a little condescending and pushy when they spoke to me. Don’t let them push you from what you feel is right, stick to your guns. My hope is that with the new partnership with the owner of Westbury Manor, some of these things are ironed out and other brides won’t have to deal with some of this disorganization. In the long run I won’t remember these little hiccups, I’ll remember getting ready with my girls in the morning, the amazing vows of my husband which just blew me away, our reveal outside in the rain, the toasts of our siblings and a fun night of dancing. Your day is what you make it.
Etsy Vendors: (All my etsy vendors get an A+)
Shoes-WalkinOnAir: LOVE my shoes. I really wanted shoes that were blue and a little different and I couldn’t be happier with them. Liz and Jennae were great to work with, they gave me a heads up that I should order a half a size down. When I didn’t see the shoes I liked listed under my size I messaged them and they were able to get them in my size. I got them quicker than expected and they fit perfectly.
“Here Comes The Bride” Sign-OurHobbytoYourHome: The sign is beautiful. It was exactly what I was looking for and it came so quickly! It came with 2 navy blue ribbons for my nephew to carry it and the quality was top notch.
Hair Combs-MissJoansBridal: My mom actually bought them for me as a birthday gift and said that the vendor was great to work with, communicated well and product came in a timely fashion. I love them, they’re exactly what I was looking for.
Return Address Rubber Stamp-PurpleLemonDesigns: I wanted a cute, fun way to put our return address on the wedding invitations and also to be able to use it after the wedding. I saw this on Pinterest and loved it. She was easy to work with, sent me a proof very quickly which looked just like I wanted it too and it came right within the specified time frame.
Name Plaque-Bosheree: She did a beautiful job. I wanted a sign that was all hand painted, not vinyl lettering and I wanted it painted all the way around. It was perfect. She does take awhile to get the sign to you but if you just pay attention to her updates and shipping estimates and order it early enough she’s a pleasure to work with. She said it would take 6-8 weeks and it came at week 7. Love it.
Clutches (BM Gifts)-Murwati: She designs clutches and other fashion accessories under the label Banana Cottage. I bought these for my bridesmaids and stuff them with a bunch of stuff they might need on the wedding day, floss, mints, advil etc. The clutches were 5x7 and silver faux silk with a personalized label sewn into them that had the girls name on it. My bridesmaids loved them, the quality was great, they fit a lot of stuff in them. Perfect.
Frame (parent gift)- YourPictureStory: This was a gift for my parents and it came out beautiful. I got it in a nice neutral grey color with the saying “Today a Bride, Tomorrow a wife, Forever your little girl”. It came quickly and was beautiful. My mom cried when she opened it. I was very happy with their work.
Cake Topper-NicoleWClark: I saw these and had to have them. We had a dog and kitty that we’re obsessed with and I wanted them on the topper so this was perfect. Nicole was super easy to work with, sent me proofs prior to setting them and I love that I have a beautiful keepsake like this. It was definitely a splurge but it’s something I’ll have in my house for a long time that will make me smile so it was worth it. I absolutely loved it.
Honeymoon-Excellence Punta Cana: A+
We wanted a relaxing honeymoon where we could lay around and do nothing, so all inclusive was the way to go. The whole month was so crazy and we had barely seen each other between crazy work schedules and wedding stuff so it was nice to have a relaxing week together. Our room was perfect was perfect with a beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean, the food was good, the staff was nice, the drinks were flowing and there were some shows at night for entertainment. You could be as active or as inactive as you wanted to be and we chose be very inactive! We went to the circus show one night which was very fun, we had private dinner on the beach which was beautiful and we got a spa treatment which was very soothing. We loved it here and I’m so happy we chose this place, it was exactly what we wanted.

Beautiful wedding! Congrats! What kind of flowers were in your bouquet? Are they blue? I am doing navy also and I didn't think I liked any blue flowers but those are beautiful!

Thank you! I felt the same as you, I couldn't find blue flowers that I liked but I wanted a little bit of dark in my bouquet since all of them were white. I saw these on Pinterest so I went with them. They're anemone's. Their center is black but it not a super dark black so it pops blue in photos and it didn't look odd at all next to the navy dresses because they were dark also and it was interspersed in the bouquet so it all looked like it went together.

You looked beautiful and it looks like you had a beautiful day! I LOVE your shoes!Thank you for your honest review of TC. I was wondering how things there would be. I'm a little nervous bc we're gonna have between 150-175 and I knew that indoor ceremony room looked small! I'm definitely going to speak up at my final meeting!

Re: My 3/29/14 wedding at Thatched Cottage with reviews of F2B, Hidden Essence, Angela's Hair Design, Tommy's Tunes, Glam Me Up and more
CJ, I will say there was a partition along the one wall and it seemed like there was extra space behind it so it's possible there is a chunk more space, but it just didn't look like a whole lot of room to me. It just bothered me that some of my guests had to stand in the back and wait while more chairs were set up when they had an accurate people count. You can see it in this picture, both the partition and the people standing and waiting...It was a beautiful space, I actually liked the whole set up of it a lotd but the only thing was they put the extra chairs in front, so people ended up like on top of us. That didn't bother me any but I felt bad that our parents were basically staring at the back of our heads. You can see how far up they were in this picture...
The ceremony was beautiful and one of my favorite parts of the day but definitely be sure to tell them that they should have the ceremony set up to accommodate the number you give them! Hopefully you have beautiful weather and you can be in that gorgeous gazebo and all of this is a moot point! If you have any other questions as you get closer let me know...only a month to go! Best of Luck!

Your wedding day looks beautiful. Its a shame about the venue, their behavior is unacceptable but I'm glad that it didn't ruin your day.

You can see it in this picture, both the partition and the people standing and waiting...
It was a beautiful space, I actually liked the whole set up of it a lotd but the only thing was they put the extra chairs in front, so people ended up like on top of us. That didn't bother me any but I felt bad that our parents were basically staring at the back of our heads. You can see how far up they were in this picture...

Thanks for posting! I also actually like the renovations to the chapel room, but I definitely see what you mean. There's no way they can fit 175! I'm going to talk to them about this when I go there. This is really the only part I'm worried about. Your wedding looked beautiful! Thanks again!
