can I wear my dress again...?

can I wear my dress again...?

Just found out that Al got us tickets to the Viennese Ball. Folks get super decked out - black tie, tails, period dresses & modern fashions.

Al's wearing his tux from our wedding. I have other gowns I could wear, but people are saying I should wear my wedding dress. Its got a renaissance/old school look to it. Its an antique ivory, and I obviously would skip the veil, tiera and train.

What do you think? I'm pretty psyched at the thought of it...(but not about the cleaning part). This would be the 3rd time I wore it - I'm getting my money's worth! Am I crazy?

to remind you of the style:

Sure! Minus the veil, I would imagine. Wish I could find another use for my dress.

You know I love your dress..but I have never seen someone where a white dress like that to a black tie affair. But I have also never been to a ball- so what do i know?.

My gut feeling is no but you had it dyed a deeper shade of ivory, then I think it would be more appropriate. Just mo.

Hmmmm - If white/ivory isn't appropriate, I'd be too afraid to dye my wedding gown. If the color is ok, I say go for it - it's a gorgeous gown and you can definitely get away with it minus veil and train

BTW - how did you manage to wear your gown for a second time?!

Minus the veil of course - I think you definitely could. Speaking of your beautiful dress - who is the designer?

Re: can I wear my dress again...?

Thanks for all the opinions! I'm not sure I'm going to go for it yet, but it'd be fun.

White is actualy very common at this ball. All the women in last years opeining commitee were in white gowns. And SF holds the black & white ball each year so there are a lot of white gowns hanging in closets looking for another reason to be worn. I could never dye my dress.

Teri- I wore my dress for the second time at the wedding celebration we threw in San Francisco. We rented out a jazz club and had a cocktail party for co-workers and local friends that couldn't make it to NY (or weren't invited). Though some of the guest list was at both parties. It was about 35 people, and a ton of fun!

So if white/ivory gowns are okay then go for it!

Just curious - what sort of party is a venetian ball?

Re: can I wear my dress again...?

Stef - its Austria's version of Mardi Gras (blow out celebrations before lent). Its held by Stanford each year (Al's an alumni).

some history on the Viennese ball:

Hundreds of balls take place in Vienna during the season of Fasching, which opens on New Year's Eve and is the last fling before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Retaining the splendor and excitement of the age of Strauss, balls usually begin with a lavish opening ceremony featuring honored dignitaries, costumed dancers, and handsomely-clad young couples.

Although balls are usually formal, they are not stuffy. An orchestra and two or three bands provide a variety of music, ranging from waltzes and polkas to swing, tango, and even rock as the dancing continues until dawn.

In 1978, students returning from the Stanford-In-Austria program organized the first Viennese Ball at Stanford campus. That first ball, held in Toyon Hall, was attended by 350 students. Today, the ball has blossomed into a prestigious formal affair held at spacious off-campus sites.
