He didn't exactly ask 'permission', but he did go and speak with them first. My old school italian dad LOVED it!

Mine did. He asked my Dad and my brother on Christmas at my Aunt's house. I had my suspicions, but he waited 7 months after that to pop the question to me, so he totally threw me off. I understand now why he waited and I'm glad he did!! I know that it really meant a lot to my Dad that he asked. I think its respectful, even if it's a little old fasioned.

My FH asked my dad. There was a running joke with all the men in my family that all my boyfriends and my cousins boyfriends were ENEMIES until they 'Did the right thing' so my FH told my father he didn't want to be the enemy anymore! It was so cute.

Ok, I LOVE telling this story because it's HILARIOUS (at least it is to me

)
So apparently the night JT proposed to me (we were living in MA at the time), he called my father beforehand to ask his permission. But my dad wasn't home, so he called him on his cell phone, and just as JT asked my father, the phone hung up. JT drove around in the car for an hour before he got the nerve to call my dad back, since he thought my dad hung up on him for asking to marry me. So my dad said to him when he called, 'So what did you want to ask me? The call got dropped.'

JT said he thought he was going to have a heart attack when my dad hung up on him. Luckily it wasn't on purpose

My FH showed my mom the ring, basically telling her he was going to ask. MY BIL asked my mom's permission. My parents are divorced. My dad got annoyed b/c both our bf's discussed with mom first and not a word to him.

Yup he drove from his house in NJ to my parents on Long Island one night while I was on a business trip. Then he asked me about 3 weeks later!

No. We are older & I have lived on my own for 21 years. When I called to tell them we got engaged my father asked me 'wasn't he going to ask my permission? I said he had my permission!
