Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

We're going to be redoing the bedroom (finally! ).
Tearing down some ugly wallpaper and painting.

I LOVE Lavendar, but for some reason, I dont see it as something I want on my bedroom walls.

Shown in This picture (borrowed from Thomasville.com). This is my bedroom set. I have all 3 pieces shown. (only one nightstand since its so huge, no room for two ).

The room is pretty small. (off the top of my head, lets say 10X10?) 2 small windows. A closet, now has mirrored sliding doors (will be taken down, debating whether to put back mirrored to give the room a more airy feel..)

So back to the color. What I had in mind was in the brown/orange family. and I definately want to do ragging/sponge effect. I do want it to have a warm feel, and not too dark since the room is already small as it is... Should I do one wall darker or will that make the room still feel smaller ?
Ideas from any of you are most welcome !!

ETA: We'll have hardwood floors, no carpeting, incase youre trying to visualize ideas

Can you pull your paint colors from your bedding?

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

I've had peach colored walls in two different bedrooms and I liked that - maybe you could do the rag/sponge effect to look sort of like a light terra cotta effect.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Karen, you got the idea of what I like, the terra cotta color family/effect.

As far as my bedding, I never invested in a 'good' bedding set. I wanted to wait until I redid the bedroom. Ive had several different sets ranging from browns to lavendars, but nothing that I will keep once the bedroom is redone.

I also want it to be neutral enough that if I want to buy a nice lavendar or light blue bedding set, it would still look nice...

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

We painted our bedroom a light taupe with a suede finish. It's neutral but the texture adds some depth

Here's a picture

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Love your bedset Anna. This is what we just painted our bedroom, it is kind of dark but doesn't really close in our room, I love it, everyone says it feels very warm and that is what we wanted.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Christine68 - I love the color of your bedroom. Can I ask what the name paint you used and the name of the color? I have been looking for a new color for our bedroom, this looks like what I have been looking for.

Tks

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

This is all JMO...

Terra cotta - I always picture in the dining room and/or kitchen for some reason...not the BR. I'd say if you want to be able to have flexibility with changing the bedding, you need a more neutral color...something like Taupe or Mocha - adds color, depth (esp if you do a faux finish) & warmth.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

We went with a 'Pumpkin' type color for our guestroom:

It's by no means big, but we think the color worked out in there.

(it's Benjamin Moore's Audubon Russet HC-51)

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

What I am thinking about doing for my master is maybe a light neutral color on the walls with a ragging effect of chocolate frost (I think that is the name from Home Depot) and maybe chocolate frost as the trim. It would be in the brown-ish beige tones and give me the flexibility to accent the room with different colors. Chocolate frost is in the beige families with a hint of brown to it.

The other thing is chocolate frost on the walls with a burgundy/browner trim. We tried that in the machine at home depot and really liked it.

But first I have to buy a bedroom set then I will decide. My best comforter set is a raisin type color - with hints of wine/maroon, brown and pinks.

I love the ragging effect I'm just worried I'll botch it up. I like your idea though Denise. Chocolate Frost sounds like a nice color.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Irene - I just did sponging for the first time in my bedroom - one wall - and it was soooo easy. Took me less than 45 minutes to do - my next try will be ragging - I think! The sell those ragging rollers at Home Depot - not sure how they well they work - I'll just start in a corner and if I hate it I will paint over it....that's the good thing with paint.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

JMO...
Lavender in a master bedroom (I wouldn't)
bathroom, or children's room (yes) - I did lavender in my baby's room and I truly love it - I too love lavender, it's probably my favorite color but it's not for a master bedroom - IMO.
I feel it's a color that after a year or two you will truly be sick of.
I too have a Thomasville set - a darker wood then yours - I went with a Ralph Lauren suede paint - I believe it was called Stone - I chose a RL bedding that complemented the walls - it's a very dark beige.
If you really want to bring lavender into the room - why not do something in the green family - lavender and green look great together - and you will be able to find this combo in a lot of places - my guest bedroom is blue and I did blue, yellow, and lavender bedding - and it's only been 8 months and I'm already sick of it -
I truly think a master bedroom should be a little more neutral - you spend a lot of time in this room -
again, just my opinion.
Let us know what you choose.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

I have some lavender in my MBR, but it's an accent color, not a dominant one. The bedding and drapes are Chambord by Croscill....the walls are a warm golden color w/sage carpet.

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

jenny-that pumpkin color looks really nice!
Niecey-thats what im thinking, something like a chocolate frost, a light brown/tan type thing that I can play with. So I can change around my bedding set and not worry about whether it matches or not.

Claud- I like that warm golden color! its bright/fresh looking and warm at the same time!

Junebride-I totally agree. I did mention that I LOVE lavendar but cant see it in my bedroom.
When John and I were dating, I used to say 'all I want is a purple bathroom' (about when we were going to be married). So I think i'll fulfill my purple obsession when we redo a bathroom!

thanks girlies.

oh, one more thing.
MOLDING- will it make the room smaller if we do really narrow molding around the top of the ceiling?
I just love the look!
and my windows are small (36X36?) and I also love sconces, but I feel like they would also 'stick out' too much...

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Oh Claud ... there are the drapes from Fortunoff's!! Beautiful!!
Anna, darling, my bedroom is like a sage green. I have a comforter set similar to Claud's.

I would recommend a lighter, warmer color for your bedroom. My kitchen has a hint of terra cotta and although I love it ... it reminds me of my kitchen.

We love Benjamin Moore paints.

I don't have molding in my room yet ... but I love it too. I don't think it will make it look smaller and you can accent the color on the walls with a different color molding!

Re: Good Bedroom colors ? Creativity ?

Moldings FINISH a room...
if you don't have them you don't miss them however, when you put them up they look amazing. We bought our home only 8 months ago and we put moldings up in almost every room - and now we are selling and moving into a new home (again, with no moldings) so here we go again - the rooms have to have them... I argued w/ hubby b/c I felt they were too much work - and the rooms looked great w/o them - well he was right (for once) ha ha - they make all the difference - If you can do it - put them up - they are also a great selling factor...
