Re: Am I the only one...
My aunt said no, she is embarrassed to read in public, and asked if she could do something less attention getting, like hand out programs.

Re: Am I the only one...
Nope!We asked DH's aunt to do a reading; she said no. She was afraid she would trip when walking up to do the reading. She totally didn't strike me as the kind of person to be like that.
My one friend I did ask laughed at first but she said she would do it.

I had one.... I was like W T F?????? I don't think I've said five words to that person since not to mention I only asked her since I asked her sister to be a BM and knew she was jealous!

Re: Am I the only one...
I wanted to have my 20 yr old cousin read something to be a part of the wedding b/c FH is not really close with him to be a gm. When i asked my aunt (his mom) if she thought he would do it she said he would be too shy.Now i am trying to convince FH to let him and my 16 year old cousin and 16 yr old brother be ushers and just hand out the programs and such at the ceremony so they can be a part of the wedding. I don't want to intrude on his bonding with the gm on the day of but they are the only family i have and I want them to be able to do something. Hopefully he goes for it.

Re: Am I the only one...
Some people are very afraid to read in front of people. Honestly, if someone asked me I would decline. While I am outgoing, I just hate being in front of a crowd and presenting something. So, I wouldn't take offense if someone said no.

Re: Am I the only one...
my best friend was like, 'are you sure?' because he's not religious at all, but after that i think he recognized I wasn't asking him to preach, but to read, and he was cool with it, and *i hope* flattered.I think it's just another wedding related situation where people don't react that way you'd expect/like them to.
I am an English teacher, and I have some kids that are so scared of reading out loud that it like paralyzes them. If I had to turn it down for that reason, I would at least explain my reasoning to the bride/groom. Then at least maybe you could do something like the PP said about taking a less attention-getting role like handing out programs.
