I finally unearthed all the china....
This was left to me by my grandmother (my father kept it for me when she passed away in February) -- I finally unpacked it all. Oh, goodness, it took a while to unwrap everything! Now I'll have to wash it all so we can use it at our first thanksgiving next week!

It's not exactly what I would've chosen for myself, but I thought it was silly to get all new pieces when this set was going to go unused (and the colors are pretty). The bowls with the covers are actually soup bowls -- the covers are to keep them warm.
I was thinking of using them as salad bowls though. Do you think that'll work?

Sandra - that is an incredible set!! Congrats on getting it and how wonderful that it's from your grandma! I think you can use those bowls as either and it's precious that there are matching covers!
Enjoy!

It all looks brand new. Your grandmother must have loved it and cared for it very well. How special that now you can enjoy the set and make your own memories!

I agree, she obviously took care of it!!! And while it might not have been what you would have chosen in the store, it did have the perfect price of free, right ?

Re: I finally unearthed all the china....
Thank you all so much! It makes me so happy to hear that you like my china too.
My grandmother bought it when she and my grandfather were on a cruise probably in the 50s, somewhere in Europe -- possibly Belgium or Denmark. According to my father, she may have used the set 3 times, if that much, during their lifetimes, but she always spoke about the china and how much she loved it. That's why in all those years she always kept it. I bet she would be so happy that I have it now!
About 8 years ago when I got my first place out of college, my grandmother took me to Pier 1 and bought me a set of four dinner plates and salad plates that I absolutely love, and the pattern is actually similar to these! I really miss her so much. I'm so happy DH got to know her and my grandfather before they passed away. When I showed him this picture at work, he said that it looks very nice!

That's wonderful you have items you use every day that make you think of your grandmother.
Cooking is such an incredible way to channel past generations. When my grandmother first went into an assisted living home, we went through the house and I took a ton of kitchen items, including some pots and some great ceramic bowls. In her lucid moments, she would tell me how happy she was that I had them.

Thanks for joining me on this trip down memory lane, ladies! You're all invited to dinner next time you're in NC!!
