married ladies: name change question

Once I changed my name with the Social Security Admin, I went to the DMV and then to the post office to change the name on my passport.

I rec'd my SS card in the mail right away, but it's been 2 1/2 weeks and I still haven't rec'd my license or new passport. I'm getting antsy because I'm going away and NEED my new passport with my new name on it (I booked the flight with my new name and they won't let me on if my ID has my maiden name!)

Oh, and did I mention, the Passport people still have my marriage certificate? Am I stressin' over nuthin' ?

Well I'm not leaving until Dec. 27 () but I just want it in my hands!

A tip: get to the SS office EARLY! I only had to wait like 20 min! and fill out the form beforehand -- you can find it online.

Well I recently had mine renewed (July) so I only had to pay for new photos ($15). But if you've renewed your passport more than a year ago, I think the standard passport application fee applies ($75 I think?) Call your PO to be sure.

Yes, it does matter. I got my marriage certificate in downtown Brooklyn and I can only go to the SS office there. I found this out when I went to the express SS office in Midtown.

I think it depends on where you got your marriage license in Queen or Brooklyn, just look of the website.

Re: married ladies: name change question

Did anyone mail their stuff to the SS office instead of going? How long did it take to get a new card?

It does matter - on the website it says something like you have to go to the SS in the county in which you now currently reside. It doesn't have anything to do with your marriage license though because I got my marriage lic. in Manhattan but had to go to SS office in Bklyn because thats where I live.

sorry girls if I was misleading. I live in Northport and got married on LI (marriage license from Huntington) so I didn't realize the SS office location mattered.

Re: married ladies: name change question

I was able to change my SS card on Long Island even though I got my marriage license in Brooklyn. It might be because I gave an out of state address to mail the new card to, though.
