Excellence Riviera Cancun vs. Playa Mujeres

FH and i have been looking into these two resorts for our HM. the travel agent said that riviera was closer to 'other things' like the ruins and cozumel.. she was kind of pushing riviera on us... so in your research and experience, whats the difference?? which one would you/did you go to and why?

I've stayed in Riviera Maya twice and I love it there. It's not too far from the sights and it's far enough away from the center of Cancun that you get peace and quiet.
My friend just got back from Playa Mujeres and she had the same thoughts as I had about Riviera Maya.

I love the Mayan Riviera. In my opinion, Playa del Carmen is the place to stay. Cancun is eh. I would really, really recommend the Royal in Playa. You could even split time between the Royal in Cancun and Playa. It's the best place I've ever stayed.

I stayed at the Excellence in Punta Cana and it was great, too, but nothing compared to the Royal.

We are looking into Playa Mujeres and Secrets Maroma Beach!! They are both so beautiful, so hard to decide!!! We stayed at the Royal in Playa del Carmen for our engagement, and it was AMAZING!!! Rooms and hotel was outstanding, food was amazing, and the restaurants are right outside the hotel, so you feel like you are really going out to eat, and it's all included! We are thinking about going back, but wanted to check out other places for something different.

My moms friend went to Playa Mujeres and can't stop raving about how great it was!!! Go on www.tripadvisor.com! You type in the resort you are looking for and people rate it, it's very helpful and been dead on so far!!

We stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun and loved it. We went on 8 different excursions. The longest drive was to Chichen Itza which was like 3 hours. Everything else was less than 1 hour drive. I have pics in my album if you want to check it out. Our second part of the honeymoon was at Playa del Carmen. We stayed at the Royal Hideaway. I don't recommend this resort. Going from the Excellence to this, I almost cried when I arrived.
