Re: Italians and Christmas Eve

You can usually get it at an A&S pork store or Italian gourmet deli or bakery. I don't know the Italian name for it though. They should know what you want if you ask for lard bread.

Re: Italians and Christmas Eve

Here is my recipe if you want to bake it! its not hard!

Italian Pie “Casatiello Napoletano”
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon yeast
3 tablespoons very warm milk
3 tablespoons olive oil
½ cup salami
½ cup soppresatta
½ cup Provolone
½ cup Parmesan cheese
1 tbsp course pepper

•Dissolve yeast in warm milk.
•In a bowl, put flour, dissolved yeast, salt and oil.
•Mix well, adding water if needed.
•Knead dough until soft and pliable.
•Shape dough into a ball and put in warm place for 2 hours.
•As dough raises, knead occasionally (three times during 2 hours).
•Then finely dice cheese, salami and sopressata provolone. Cut Parmesan cheese in half and finely grate one half of it.
•Combine the ingredients with dough and knead well again.
•Roll dough into a tube shape, coat with oil and let raise for 15-20 minutes.
•Then place into properly pre-heated oven.
•Bake at the temperature of 320-360 F for 30-40 minutes until done.
•When pie turns nicely brown, it is ready.
•Arrange on a serving plate, let cool and serve.
