Greece?

We're starting to kind of think about the HM, and we know we want to go to Greece, obviously since FH is Greek. We will probably go to at least one island, and spend a day or two in the rural Peloponnese with family, and Athens for a day or two if it's still standing. But does anyone have any recommendations for other places to go? We're not big partiers, so I don't know if we'd be too into the really wild island-life. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: Greece?

Here are a list of places that FH and I have either been to in Greece that are perfect for romance, sight seeing and great hospitality!!!

Santorini--super romantic!

Crete--lots of history, gorgeous scenery and the people are just PHENOMENAL!!!

Kefalonia--again, lots of history, including a beautiful cave where they say miracles happen in

Korfu--GORGEOUS although I thought the people were a little rude there but you will get over it once you see the lush landscape and beautiful water!

Evia--a quick boat ride from Athens

Rhodes--I have never been but I only hear WONDERFUL things about this island!!!

Re: Greece?

Santorini is incredibly beautiful and romantic.

Rhodes was probably my favorite. It was the most diverse looking island I went to. Plus, the castle area is really cool.

Mykonos - the big party island. We stayed at a resort far outside of town which was beautiful but to tell the truth, it was my least favorite island.

Athens - of course you have to go there to see the acropolis and other sites, but we were only there for 2 nights and it was plenty.

Re: Greece?

We went to Crete and Santorini. We picked Santorini b/c of all the wonderful reviews and it seemed like the ideal honeymoon spot for beautiful views and relaxation (which it was!). We picked Crete b/c it had some much to do on just one island - and we spent most of our time there.

One word of caution regarding the time of year - I think after October these islands generally shut down (with the exception of some year round locals) and are on the chilly side.

Re: Greece?

While you're in Athens, try to go to Cape Sounio, which is an awesome lookout point on the outskirts of the city...there are usually tours that take you there around sunset, which is the best time to go.

Re: Greece?

Thanks for the input so far!!!

Does anyone have any insight into the weather? We're thinking either June or July, and I think due to my job June would probably be an easier month to get off for, but I'm thinking July has better weather. Is that accurate?

Re: Greece?

I went in July. It was hot, but like everyone says 'It's a dry heat' there's really no humidity so even if it's sweltering in the sun, as soon as you get in the shade, you're fine. We didn't have one rainy or cloudy day. Plus what was really nice, is it stayed light out until like 9:30 - 10:00 pm!

Greece and NY have very similar weather conditions. June in Greece is usually ok, but some parts do get a bit of rain. July and August are better but a bit more humid on the islands. And definitely more tourists in July & August. I would say aim for late June through early July to sort of get the best of both worlds.
