Opinion
So after doing my own makeup for the association dinner I went to last weekend in the 100% humidity and rain and having it melt off me by the end of the night, I've gotten over my 'I'm doing my own makeup' kick pretty good. So back to the drawing board. My dilemma is that my younger sister's best friend is a makeup artist and jr. stylist. My sis wants her to do her hair and stuff, so I will be inviting her as a guest as well. She's good from what I understand, but she's also 19 (20 at time of wedding), and only has like a year of real experience. I just don't have the confidence to have her do my hair and makeup. My sister is ok with it obviously because it doesnt matter as much for her, and I may ask her to do some of my other girls as well (time permitting).
So if I do get someone else to come in to do my hair and makeup, would it be really weird for them to see another girl doing the rest of the bridal party? I don't want to insult them or anything and then have it be taken out on me with a crappy job. On the other hand, I don't want to overtly shove it down my sister's friend's throat that I didn't think she was experienced enough to do my hair and makeup.
What would be the best way to handle this without insulting either set of professionals, or should I just not care and have it arranged this way?

Re: Opinion
arrange it howveer you want. Anyone you hire isn't going to care, just tell them it was a friend. Tell the friend (if she even cares) that you already had arrangments.

Re: Opinion
I think you should do a trial run with your sister's best friend first, you may be surprised. If you don't like it then you can hire someone outside. Brides have their own makeup artist and stylist all the time so if you do decide to go with someone else, they'll be fine....it's work for them and I'm sure things like this happen all the time for them......Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Try a trial run with your sisters friend, if you dont like the way it turns out just tell her the truth and say, I am going to hire someone else because of... this or that

Re: Opinion
I dont know, your sisters friend might completely understand that you want someone with more experience to do your makeup.. after all its YOUR big day. Talk to her and tell her that you are probably going to have someone come do your makeup but you would love if she would do the rest of the girls.. let her know in advance. Also, whoever you hire to do your makeup should'nt have an issue with you having your sisters friend there but i would just let them know in advance too so there are no surprises and no one upset on your wedding day.

Re: Opinion
Yeah, I still don't know what to do. Under completely normal circumstances, I'd definitely have her at least do a trial. I am still considering it. But, there's a big BUT. There's no way to sugar coat it, so I just have to come out and say it. She works in a salon for her real job, but she also is becoming a fixture on the drag circuit. We can't seem to get out of her if she's using her own makeup and tools when she does this, or applying their own makeup with their own tools. Perfectly bluntly, I do not feel comfortable with that at all for hygiene purposes. If she does use her own makeup and tools for that, I would probably buy my own tools and makeup and just have her apply it, which is more money than I was looking to spend. That probably comes off pretty homophobic, but I'm just really concerned about the hygienic factor in this particular case. Now you see why it's not that easy in this situation!

Do a trial run with the girl- she may be really good! When I was in 10th grade and my older sister was going to clubs, I used to do her hair. All her friends were crazy about it! So I think if someone is good, they'll be good regardless of age. Just don't have a 10 year old do your makeup or hair.

Jesus H. Christ in a chicken basket. Roll all you want, that's a legitimate health concern. Everyone should be concerned with a makeup artist's hygiene PERIOD, if they're doing drag queens or not. When you really break it down, it's disgusting to use makeup on more than one person. The last thing we all need is pinkeye on our weddings days.

If you dont think your sisters friend doesnt have enough experience than go with your gut and get someone who does. You want to look your absolute best on your wedding day!!

Re: Opinion
Just say that you want to have 2 girls doing make-up so that no one feels rushed and girls don't have to get their make-up done at the crack of dawn. I'm having 2 girls (different companies) and so id my friend for that exact reason.

Re: Opinion
Makeup artists keep their makeup but use new brushes and applicators... it's not like they have 1 time use makeup. So I guess I'm just confused why you arn't wondering if she uses the same tools on other women, not just drag queens (Which, if she works for a salon, I'm sure she doesn't.....)
I'm just a little confused by your concern I guess

Re: Opinion
I don't think it will be weird at all...the professional that you use will be getting paid so I dont think she will care and just tell your sisters friend that you went for a trial a while ago and fell in love....if she is a professional she will understand!Try Marie Katz for makeup and Nicole D'Angio for hair....I am VERY picky about how people put MU on me and don't get me started about people doing my hair and I was SOOOO happy with them!!!! GOOD LUCK!

Wait...what do you think she is doing with the queens??? She is just applying makeup to their FACES like she would any other woman. I don't understand the concern about hygiene there??? All MU artists, at least all reputable ones, clean their brushes and do not 'double dip' so to speak. I am totally confused as to why it worries you that she is applying MU to men as well as women...a face is a face....plenty of women are dirty too... it is not just gay men. (And I am not looking to start drama...I am just confused)

Re: Opinion
I guess I'm more just concerned about the eye makeup, since that has more of a chance of being touched by bodily fluids. It kind of skeeves me. It skeeves me with women too, don't get me wrong.I just had a bad experience at a salon once where the makeup and brushes were not sanitary, and the mascara was just a regular tube being double dipped, no one time use applicators. That's pretty disgusting. I'll have to talk to her to find out for certain how clean her stuff is before I can feel totally comfortable with it.
