good NYC restaurants

We've decided to go into the city for our one year anniversary. Now I need restaurant suggestions. I'd like to go somewhere really romantic but I want to make sure they have regular food. I went to one place once and there wasn't a single thing on the menu I would EVER consider eating. So ladies, do you know of anyplace? Please help.

Re: good NYC restaurants

check out 'BED' google it. It's in the factory, the elevator takes you up and you eat on a bed. I took DH for his bday and he loved him. The bill ran up to $250 excluding drinks. The food seemed to be little but it was delicious and really filled us up. You can try Water Edge which is in LIC Queens. You can take their water taxi from the city to go eat dinner and then take it back if you are planning on staying in the City.

Re: good NYC restaurants

What do you consider 'regular' food? And what would you consider not-regular?

i went to son cubano bc everybody kept saying how delicious it was. Both Dh and I were not impressed at all with the food. The place is nice though, but we love cuban food and compared to other places, i felt it was eh. But like you said, its such a hot trendy spot that i think ppl go bc of the name.

Re: good NYC restaurants

If you like French, I'd check out La Grenouille -- they have some weird things on the menu but also plenty of normal things --- extremely romantic and they are known for their beautiful floral arrangements. Check out their website

If you like American, I'd highly recommend The Modern. It's located in the MOMA and overlooks the sculpture gardens. The food is spectacular (also, check out their website!) and I recommend the risotto and the pea soup. The plating is gorgeous and artistic.

Finally, if you like Italian I'd recommend Il Tinello. OMG, everything there was fantastic and they prepare it tableside. Even the caesar salad -- they made my friend's dressing from scratch in front of us and it was pretty cool.

Oh boy, this is making me so hungry.

Edit: I'm a picky eater too and I'd recommend checking out anything you're considering on menupages -- especially when going to fancier restaurants I feel more comfortable being sure there is something I would eat there, and reading reviews (which tend to be on point). Of course, some places have specials (when I was at Il Tinello I ordered an appetizer and entree that were both daily specials) but it gives you an idea of what to expect.
