Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

I'm registered to vote with my maiden name. If I change my name before the election I'm assuming I need to change my voter registration too before the deadline? Or can I use my old drivers license and old name?

I really want to vote in this election -- maybe I should wait to officially change my name until afterwards? Any other recent newlyweds think about this? How does it work?

I am worried about this too...do you know when the cutoff is? I plan on starting to change my name by the end of this week.

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

Im registered under my maiden name and I think Im going to wait to change my name till after the election. I read the rules and procedures on what to do if you do change your name and it sounds kind of complicated.

I know, me too and the registration deadline is really soon, i think. I might wait to make it official until after. Buys me a little time to decide on my middle name, although I think I'm pretty sure

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

Ok this is what happened when I changed my name (I live in nj tho)...they asked if I wanted to register to vote and I said yes. I got a new form and signed my new name.

(Maybe I was never registered before tho...not quite sure)

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

rockthevote.com had a very easy 'register to vote' application that allowed you to change your name/address.....you just fill it in on the site and it creates a PDF that you print, fold up and mail in...EASY!

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

Download the form and send it in. Where you send it depends on if you live in Nassau or Suffolk.
NYS Board of Elections

It was harder to change my name on my frequent flyer account for United than it did to change my name for voting and it took less than 3 days. (But I live in CT.)

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

I just got my voting location paper and it had my maiden name on it so i am just going to bring my passport with me that day and use that if they ask for ID and change my name on it afterwards.

Re: Name Change and Voting -- a question about timing

I was just reading up on this. You won't be able to vote in a primary in the same year as a name change but can in the main election as long as your new registration is received earlier than 25 days before the election.
