tricky thank you note....mom's advice

My mom has friends I do not know very well...I last saw them 25 years ago.
In the spring their daughter passed away.
She was about my age and had several cognative disabilities, but her death was a shock and a bit of a mystery.
Unfortunately I never sent a condolence note. Poor form on my part.
Now,much to my surprise they send me a wedding gift.
I think am too late to send a condolence note... do I mention their daughter's passing in the thank you?
It was a registry gift they had someone order for them online, with no note, so for a while it slipped through the cracks.
It was very gracious of them to think of me at such a sad time, but I don't know if I should say that. Or should I just send a nice thank you?

Moms...any suggestions?

Yes Suzanne mention her daughter in the thank you note. First thank them for the beautiful gift then go on to mention how sorry you are about their daughter and that at the time of her death say that you didn't have the words to describe how you felt and that with her being your age it was hard for you to comprehend her passing. Then ask for them to please forgive you not being able to acknowledge the passing sooner. I am sure they will understand.

oh Liz...you are good. Thankfully I sent this a few weeks ago, but boy did you find the right things to say.
I have no idea why, my mom told me to send the note to the mom only. I appreciate your help!
