What do you grab 1st

It's three A.M., your in a deep sleep -- suddenly the fire alarm goes off . . .As you run out of the house, what's the first thing you'd grab (excluding things that breathe)?

I'll go 1st:
Definitely my wedding pics
2nd-Citizens jeans
3rd-favorite pair of shoes
4th-Gucci clutch & charles david clutch

since the day dh & i moved in together, i have been under STRICT instructions to grab his baseball card collection

definitely our wedding pics

and our wedding jewelery (e-ring and our w-rings)

the pearls i got at my bridal shower from my mom -- its been a family tradition

maybe the book of recipes from my bridal shower ... some of them are from relatives no longer with us. it could be replaced, but its sentimental that i got it at our shower.

ummm ... our two TiVos?

neither of us really has very expensive clothes, i don't think i would save any of that stuff.

poor dh, his DVD collection would burn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly enough, I've actually thought about this many times! When your landlord is the scum of the earth, and your building has all sorts of violations, you think about these things!

the folder of important documents that hubby has instructed me not to forget in case of a fire

the 4 baseballs that my fil got for my husband when he was working at Shea many many years ago - one of the balls has signatures from the entire 86 Met's team!

Assuming we could carry all this:
-Wedding pics on CD
-Wedding Video DVDs
-Laptop & Detachable hard drive we have connected to our PC
-My Guitar & CDs of my songs
-Wedding Bands & Engagement Ring (we don't wear to sleep)
-Marriage License, Soc. Security cards & Passports
-My purse

Probably our box w/ important papers and such and my purse (for money & CC's).

But as long as my kids are safe. who cares!!


A friend of mines house burned down and they lost everything. The saddest thing is that not even 1 year before her dad died very suddenly and everything they had to remember him by was lost in the fire also.

She said that just a couple of weeks before she had taken a survey in a magazine and they asked this same exact question and she answered the one thing she would grab was her designer sunglasses. Now that she has nothing to remember her dad by she said she couldn't believe that her sunglasses were the first thing to come to her mind. She felt really guilty over that.

I would not worry about passports and most of the jewels b/c I just bought a fire safe.

most everything else can be replaced

as long as my Hub and Cat are o.k then I am o.k

1- wedding rings
2- wedding album
3- cash (purse)

luckily i have a back up of all my pics on another computer--so i wouldn't care about grabbing them!

i'd grab:

-important papers folder i have
-purse
-cat

(obviously DH would be with me--but thats a given)

everything else is replaceable

My wedding gown since i still haven't taken the care to preserve it.

First I'd make sure DH was awake and with me!

I'd grab my dog first - most important.

And then... I have no idea. THINGS are replaceable so as much as it would hurt to lose pictures, our lives (me, DH, doggie) are most important.

This is why I think it's important to have a fire safe! They're pricey but I think in the end it's worth it. Definitely something for us to consider! ESPECIALLY since it would be a SUPER pain to replace all important documents like passports, ss cards, etc.
