Marriage License and Name Change Timing

Just wanted to make sure I understand:

1. I apply for marriage certificate
2. I can go on my honeymoon with my maiden name
3. When I get my marriage license, I have to go to SS office first , and then DMV, and banks.

Is there a time limit after I receive my marriage license to change my name?
Do I have to do it right away?
Can I still travel for another year (if I have to) with my passport in my maiden name or once I get my marriage license I need to hurry up and change my name everywhere?

Correct! GO to get your license within 60 days of your wedding but at least 24 hours out...HM with your maiden name and when you get the certificate in the mail take the original with you to SS and DMV-they will give it back to you.

You have all the time you want to change your name-the certificate never expires. If you change your name on your DL then get a new passport, you have to be able to Verify that you are Mrs. SMith with your DL and passport-so they need to be the same. I personally took my time changing my name. It didnt screw up any of our stuff for taxes

Oh thanks, but I thought the marriage license gets mailed to you? What do you mean that I have 60 days to get it?

I think she means 60 days before your ceremony.

Your marriage license is good for 60 days from the day after you apply for it.....They mail you an original after the celebrant sends it to the town hall where you applied....Hope that helps.....

Marriage license is the paperwork you give your officiant/preist/etc. to sign-what you use to change your name is your marriage certificate.

There is a waiting period of 24 hours...you cannot get married within 24 hours of getting your license....but must get married within 60 days from the day you apply for the license. After your wedding you will receive your Marriage Certificate

If you change your name on one thing you must change your name on everything. My friend only changed her name on her drivers lice. and bank stuff not her passport. We all went to Bermuda for vacation and she had to go the next day and pay $$$$$ b/c she couldnt get on the flight. She had to go to town hall and get paper work. It ******

Was the name on her ticket with her maiden name or married name? If the name on the ticket was her maiden name, then she could have used the passport with her maiden name.

I went to the DMV 1st. They were the most organized. After that the Passport. Then SS.

Order doesn't matter that much.

Ok, now my FH and I aren't leaving for our honeymoon until the week after the wedding. I can still use my passport with my maiden name correct? I plan on changing all my information after we get back from the honeymoon so I don't mess anything up. Is this how it works or will I have a problem? So confusing

YES! Basically-your passport name has to match your DL name in order for them to allow you to board a plane
