repost - Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip

We are spending a 4-5 days in Rome for our honeymoon and we decided instead of spending more time down south in the Naples area we would take a day trip to Pompeii. Has anyone does this before? Is it better to do on our own or with a tour? Any recomendations? TIA!

when i did it we went a tour ...it was 10 years ago so pretty hard for me to remember ...but i do remember it was amazing!

I would absolutely go with a tour -- you will definitely get more out of it. Your hotel in Rome should be able to help arrange the tour for you.

my travel agent is arranging a private 2 hour tour of Pompeii. After staying in Rome, we'll be headed to Amalfi, and when we get off the train in Naples, a private car will take us to Pompeii since it's on the way to Amalfi. Most of our other tours will be with a group, so this will be a nice change of pace.
