Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
We are spending a 4-5 days in Rome and we decided instead of spending more time down south in the Naples area we would take a day trip to Pompeii. Has anyone does this before? Is it better to do on our own or with a tour? Any recomendations? TIA!

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
I honestly would not stay in Naples it isn't very nice. However Pompeii was really fun and very cool. then again I was an art history major how could I not enjoy it.We were staying in sorrento and took the train to pompeii and we used the audio tour. It was fine however if you know nothing about pompeii a guided tour may not be a bad idea.
Where else are you going in Italy?
Hold on tight to you belongings in the Rome subways, people get pick pocketed all the time.

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
pompei is not a honeymoon spot in my opinion. I have been their twice and its actually a very sad story behind it. It is a place where acient ruins lie. Nothing you would want to add in your honeymoon album. How about a quick train ride to Venice for the day!!Good luck FM me anytime. I spent a semester studying in Rome back in college.

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
i spent a summer living in Italy, and have been to Pompeii. If you only have 1 day, skip it. If you are in Rome, you will see enough ruins at the Forum. Go up to Siena or Florence. Better yet, if you have more time, rent a car and drive through Tuscany, stopping at all the ancient tower towns (like San Gimignano) and vineries! It is soo romantic. I cant wait to go back one day with FH (I was there with him the first time, and we had a blast!) And the food is THE BEST in Tuscany by far. Good luck, no matter what u decide to do it will be awesome! I am soo jealous!

I would agree with you. I studied in Florence for 6 months and I loved it. the Tuscan region is the so romantic. I can't wait to go back with FH, he has never been. I left a lot of my heart there I would move there in a heart beat. I had such a relaxing life.

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
Thanks girls! We are actually planning on spending a week in Tuscany after Rome. I know Pompeii is usually not the typical place you would go on your honeymoon, but FH is a big history buff and would really like to take the trip there. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
we went to the ruins of pompei and although yes it was interesting, it was exhausting, hot, and packed with hundreds of tourists! Way too exhausting, so i dont really reccomend it

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
My sister just came back from her honeymoon in Italy, and went to Pompeii for the day and really enjoyed it.They have audio tours you can purchase there instead of doing a group tour.
October is a low time for tourists and the weather should be really nice - Enjoy!

Do a tour of Pompei.... so much to see and a guide helps sort it all out

We are going to Italy for our honeymoon, starting off in Venice, Florence, Rome and ending up at the Almafi coast. We were thinking the same thing .

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
I am a TA and I would tell you to defiantly take a tour from rome. it might be a pain to get there on your own. You can also concider getting a private car to take you to Pompei. You can walk around by yourself once you are there. You can rent the audios. If you really want to do it on your own I would take the train from Rome to naples and then take a cab to Pompei.

I loved Pompeii- I did it on a tour and really learned so much more about it than I would have otherwise!

Re: Italy! Rome to Pompeii day trip
i've been to the amalfi coast 2x and although i wanted to go to pompeii, i was always discouraged by the locals due to the temperature, the distance from amalfi, and the crowds...mt. vesuvias looks like an amazing thing to visit, i was pretty close to it on my first trip staying at a hotel in naples (torre del greco) for one night...I wouldn't recommend naples in general for a day's stay, even when i stayed for one night i was escorted in the evening by woman who owned a large jewelry company and hotel there and even she told my friend and I just to stay in the hotel for the afternoon upon our arrival and she would escort us to dinner because the area is pretty unsafe for tourists...however, i would highly recommend taking a day trip or rethink an overnight trip to anywhere on the amalfi coast...amalfi, postiano, ravello, scala, minori, sorrento....there are plenty of ruins and historical piazzas and churches in each town to satisfy anyone interested in that sort of thing...feel free to fm me for any additional info...i would love to go back there for my honeymoon but i just can't justify the euro to the dollar right now!!Welcome New Vendors
