My July 1, 2006 Wedding Review with proofs

First off, I want to recommend to any future bride to go to as many expos, or events that you can. We went to many and won a variety of things that are worth a great deal of value and memories!!!!

Second, don’t fret the small stuff!!!!!!!!! You can worry about whether or not you are going to get there on time, whether or not you have lipstick on your teeth for all your photos and things like that. You can’t control the weather, or what Uncle Humphrey is going to do at the reception. We’ve been married almost a month now and still haven’t received RSVP’s back, never mind even a gift for our wedding. Some of the RSVP’s included a plus someone who wasn’t on the initial invite! It’s all part of having a wedding. We decided early on that we could either be upset about our guests, or excited to have them share in our day. That is also why I included my 8 nieces and 6 nephews into the day. I made kids center pieces with games and coloring books for them to play with. When some of his cousins from out of town RSVP’d plus children, we said GREAT, bring them on!

I want to say that ALL my main vendors were perfect!!!!! There was not one problem with anything, from beginning to end! Now, I want to share my thoughts and experiences about all my vendors.

Westbury Manor-- A+

From the moment I pulled into the driveway of the Westbury Manor, I was awestruck. The Manor is breathtaking. The grounds, the Manor itself, and the staff were amazing. Everything to me was perfect. From the first payment we made I felt completely at ease with our decision to have our wedding there. Even the day of, Jerry Scotto (owner/proprietor of Westbury Manor) came into the room to see how things were going. I gave him a huge bear hug because I was so happy. The compliments from everyone were just flowing all day and for weeks after about how wonderful the place was.

About a year before the wedding I was asked to come in and offer my opinions about Westbury Manor and other catering halls that we had looked at. I sat with about 10 other brides for about 2 hours with Jerry Scotto. We had a great time! For our time, they offered us a choice of free services (free chocolate fountain, free martini bar, free Hawaiian theme for cocktail hour, and one or two other things). We chose the chocolate fountain.

On the day of the wedding, we had Laura as our Bridal Attendant and she was most amazing!!!! There wasn’t anything we needed that we didn’t have. She constantly had glasses of water and other refreshments for us all at any given moment. She even went into the bathroom stall with me and helped me in there!! (On the second round I just said hey, my gown is two pieces, just help me take the bottom and the slip off and I’ll do fine!!!!)
We also had Lorena (I think that was her name, I’d check my cake box that she signed, but I have it all wrapped up!). We absolutely didn’t need a Day of Coordinator because of her. She kept everything in motion from 9:00am when we got there for pictures to 6:00pm when we left. She deserves every penny of what she makes!!!

The Inn at Fox Hollow- A+
We researched hotels for our OOT guests to stay at, but we didn’t want a hotel feel. We wanted exactly what the Inn offered. They have a very home like feel to each area of their hotel. We also needed a hotel that would enable us to have a rehearsal dinner at the location because all of my husbands family that was staying at the hotel, would be invited to the dinner. It also being a Scotto run facility made us quite comfortable in our selection. The dinner was really good, and they were most accommodating when we ran out of food and they had to hurriedly prepare more for our unexpected guests.

To make it an even better choice, we won a free night stay in the Bridal Suite at the LIW Wedding of the Year. The room was REALLY nice!

OOTer buckets-

Dan did not want to do the paper bag route. His cousins did a cute plastic pumpkin so we decided to do something along that line. I bought plastic sand buckets from Big Lots. I ordered I Love NY magazines from the I Love NY website. His mom offered to do the rest and I was super grateful. She bought chocolate hearts; jelly beans, and mint M&M like candies from Lazars Chocolates in Manhasset. She also included a bottle of water and an apple. Dan printed up letters for them giving the info about the rehearsal dinner, breakfast in the morning and the shuttle we provided from the hotel to the Westbury Manor and back to the hotel.

They were our second vendor booked. We met with several different OJ’s but we clicked with them the best! On the day of, they were AMAZING. Everyone commented on how they kept things flowing smoothly. They were really good with all the kids. The drummer especially, he had a few of my nephews tagging along most of the night. I

Also, it is a great feeling when the DJ comes up to you at the end of the night to thank YOU for having such a great party and that he hasn’t had so much fun at a wedding in a long time. He really loved all my guests and the enthusiasm that they all had! He couldn’t believe that such an eclectic assortment of music would go over so well. We went from The Ramones with Do You Wanna Dance? to Sinatra with New York, New York. It was awesome. I was so happy and giddy, that I just kept jumping up and down.

Photographer- A+
Twelfth Night Photography 516 746.5346

Jessica (AKA JessicaM.) and I met at a Westbury Manor showcase and it was through her that I heard of this magical Dominic. I checked him out on LIW and his website Follow this link to their website
I had gone by myself to meet Dom and was blown away by his enthusiasm and excitement about his job. I dragged Dan there to meet with him. They are very competitive with other photographer’s prices. We booked our engagement shoot with him at our hall and were blown away at our shots.

We had Dominick and Anthony for our day of and were at ease with them for the whole day!!! In retrospect I wish I hadn’t been so frugal and paid for more hours. As soon as Anthony left (5:00pm) Dan and his 94 year old grandmother finally got a chance to dance. He would have loved a picture of that!

The whole experience with Dominic and the staff of Twelfth Night has been amazing. They truly deserve all the business they get!

Flowers- A+

LA Blossom- Laurie 516-650-3010
What hasn’t been said already about how wonderful she is!!! Even during the planning, she was so helpful. I had mentioned that I wanted a custom cake topper of us rock climbing and she even researched that for us. She was extremely creative with what we wanted (especially since we really had no real knowledge of what we really wanted).

The morning of my wedding, I was in my with my girls watching them get their hair/makeup done. I heard my mom say that the flower lady was there and that Laurie should put them on the dining room table. I walked down my hall and turned the corner to the most beautiful sight ever. I couldn’t believe how amazing the flowers were. I am not the type to do public displays of anything and I starting tearing up the moment I saw them. Laurie was so amazing! She was trying to make me laugh so that I wouldn’t ruin my makeup.

Cigar Roller- A+
LaRosaCubanaCigars.com 212.532.7450

I really wanted to do something special for my husband on the day of the wedding. I heard way too many times that this day was all about me and wanted to make something be his. It was a complete surprise for Dan. I had called Frank several months before the wedding to find out the details. They offer different packages. I did everything by phone and email.
I got the cigar roller for one hour. He rolled 75 cigars on the site. Immediately after the ceremony, we walked into our cocktail hour together. We were the first ones to walk up. As we walked up, he noticed them and was like “what the heck is this?” I was giddy with excitement. People started piling in behind us and wanting to push their way in, but I stood my ground just so that Dan could watch a cigar being prepared. He went to take a cigar already rolled, but I snatched it out of his hand and we waited for a fresh one. I asked the roller to set aside 5 cigars for my husband (it was the first time I said that, and I almost burst into tears!!!!). Before he left, he handed me a bag with the cigars as requested.
I have been told by several of the guests that they were really fine cigars. I found out when we got back from our honeymoon that some people took some home. That would have been fine, but some of the people that took them home don’t smoke!!! They were bringing them home to give to their friends! Ugh! I don’t know if I should have told the roller one cigar per person but I guess you can’t stop people from being rude or greedy.

Matchboxes-- A+

I actually didn’t research these, Chrissy (AKA LIWer ChrissynRickky) recommended her. Chrissy also made up several monograms for me to use. I used EBAY VENDOR athenalittleone. Follow this link to their website
She was great! She explained to me that the file I sent her wasn’t legible to the computer program she uses so she recreated it on her own computer. I received the 200 matchboxes promptly and nicely wrapped. I would highly recommend her. Again this was something that people snatched up, so set some aside for yourself if you want a keepsake.

Invitations- A
Perfection Printing 516 221.4100
Merrick Rd, Bellmore

They offered the usual discounted rates off the book price. The invites came in as promised in three weeks. The owner Tom called and told me that there was an error on the invite. He said that I could come in and pick everything else up so that I could at least start on the envelopes. They had added an extra period in after my father’s name, so they were reprinting them at Elite. It only took one week to receive the corrected invites.

Phyllis- A+

I did not want my flower girl to be in a white gown. I feel that the only person that should be in white or ivory that day is the bride. I decided to have her be in the same color as my bridesmaids. I couldn’t find a raspberry chiffon dress in a flower girl size anywhere. I found Phyllis through another LIW bride. I mailed her a check and a swatch of the bridesmaids dress and made an appointment for the first fitting about one month before.

She was an absolute wonder to work with. When we went for the first fitting one month before, she had the dress almost all the way made up. My niece is three years old so we didn’t want to get the dress fitted too soon for any growing spurts. Phyllis was able to do the hem and get the correct fit done perfectly at the first fitting and schedule the final fitting and pick up about two weeks before the wedding..

My sister (and all the bridesmaids) had her dress ordered from Lillettes. My sister is a plus sized woman. When we ordered the dress for her, we were told that they didn’t make her size, but they could order the biggest size and do alterations to make it fit. It was just the thing to do. However, being a plus sized person, the bodice was too open for her very endowed chest, so she decided to put a modesty piece across the front. Lillettes didn’t have any fabric left over to do this. So in desperation, I called Phyllis to see if she had any fabric left over from my nieces dress. She said absolutely, come on in. While we were there, Phyllis gave us the idea to not just do a square style modesty piece, but to have it more styled along the lines of the dress. (In retrospect I liked the square style better, but it made my sister feel more comfortable).

Lillettes- A

I’ve been a customer there as a bride and also as a bridesmaid in the past. Over all, my experience with the ladies at Lillettes is outstanding. I loved Francine (my seamstress). There was one seamstress downstairs that helped bridesmaids that needs a course in customer relations; she was quite rude to two of my bridesmaids. She didn’t say a word for half the fitting and when you asked a question she beat around the bush. We noticed a spot on the back of one of the dresses and she blamed us saying it was my sister’s deodorant. I asked for the owner and she helped us out by getting rid of the stain. The others were so friendly and courteous.

I walked in, told them what I wanted, they measured me, told me to pick a date that I wanted it ready, left a deposit. That took about ten minutes. I went on the date that I was told to pick it up. They showed me the finished product, wrapped it up carefully, and told me exactly how to care for it until the wedding and everything. That took another ten minutes. They were so nice, offering words of encouragement and advice that were much appreciated.

Hair jewelry
Follow this link to their website- A+

They are beautiful, absolutely stunning! Thomas and his wife Raquel are such a nice couple to work with. He does such amazing work and gave me the great idea to change the clips around during the reception so that it would look good in pictures (I didn’t have time to do this, but I thought that was really cool). I think I want to bring the hair jewelry back so that he could make them into a hair clip that I could wear on special occasions.

Hair and Makeup- - A+

I had gone to a local hair place that I had been to before for coloring and styling. I went their on a whim for a holiday party last year. I didn’t book a person, I just made the appointment with the front desk and they gave me Danielle. I had her style my hair how she wanted to see what she could come up with. I was really happy with it. I asked her if she did weddings and she said sure, she even did makeup! I booked a trial with her after deciding on a style and was VERY happy with it. She had her aunt who styled hair also come with her the day of since it was me, another four hairs and two other makeups. She was really great to work with. She called me back with a schedule about a week before which was great that she did that because I was fried at that point.

Dealt with Mike who I believe is the owner. Really nice guy. Took his time explaining all the styles and possibilities to my then fiancé. When we went back with some groomsmen, he measured them in minutes rather than waiting for hours like we had at After Hours other times.

Wedding Bands- A
Gary’s Jewelry 516 882.9015 Located in the Jewelry Outlet on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.

They were the cheapest place for the design ring that we wanted. I went to a few places in the city and the Tri County flea market. Gary’s was able to order the rings the way I wanted them (I wanted mine slightly narrower than his).

Limos- A
Serenity Limos 631.929.8888

Thank you so much to Darlene (AKA OctoberBliss) for referring me to Eddie at the LIW Bridal Extravaganza. They were the last vendor that I needed to book. I loved that they had the Chrysler 300. I really wanted that for my limo. We also thought their prices for shuttling guests between the hotel and Westbury Manor was very fair. I originally wanted the big party bus. I felt that it was a much more fun and party like atmosphere. I should have checked my contract because it didn’t say the bus; we were given 4 or 5 stretch limos instead. All the guests raved about them. They were very neat, the drivers were courteous and the most important, THEY ARRIVED EARLY!!!!!!

Pastor April Gismondi Officiant- A+

She is a life saver! Literally! She saved my DH’s butt.

We had originally gone to see her in September. We were both very comfortable with her and decided to book her. About a month later one of Dan’s friends (and coworker) got ordained by the pope to become a priest. He really wanted to do our ceremony (or so he said) and the best part, for FREE. We cancelled with April and waited to hear from his friend. We waited and waited. We heard many sad stories about dying relatives. We really felt bad for the guy until about a month before the wedding and we were still getting the shuffle from him. I told Dan that I was giving the guy one more week then he had to do something about it! He gave him the week. I got a call from him saying I have bad news, and I have good news, which do you want first. Since I always hope the good with make up for the bad, I take the bad first. He broke it to me that he couldn’t get in touch with his friend, but he had already gotten in touch with April and she was available and she even still had the stuff she had sent us. This was all said in one really rushed sentence so I really had to laugh off the friend and be very thankful that Dan was so encouraged to make it all good. April was a doll. She has many prewritten words that she can say. She lets you change around things to your hearts content, or she’ll even just say a quick something to get you married. We edited around the 22 pages of info she gave us, changing it around until it was exactly what we wanted. She was perfect!

She also helped us include a Butterfly Release
Follow this link to their website

My husband is a teacher and in one of his classes they raised and released butterflies. He knows how much I love butterflies so suggested that we find out how much it would be to buy some and release them. We didn’t think the price tag for them was reasonable so we decided to buy the caterpillars and raise and release our own. The price was 75% less to raise our own!!!

It took about 3 weeks to do the whole process. We even had to move the critters from his old apartment to our new one (they rode in my back seat ). Dan was responsible the morning of the wedding to move them from the pavilion we raised them in to the thing we released them in. We made it out of Styrofoam and tulle we bought at Joanne’s.

We got MANY compliments on the release and even more when we told them we raised them ourselves (even though I got a few rolled eyes from my MIL, it was worth it!).

Sand ceremony-

I wanted to do something like the candle ceremony, but with a twist. I had seen this done elsewhere and really liked it. We purchased the vases from the Wedding Center in Commack and the sand from AC Moore and an online company. We included our guests by having them pour a little bit of sand prior to the ceremony. It looks great in our living room.

page bearer bells
Brides and Bells Follow this link to their website- A+

I have 14 nieces and nephews all under the age of 13 that I wanted to have in my bridal party. Since that was economically impossible, I decided to incorporate them by being page bearers. The ones that weren’t already in my bridal party were given silver bells and lined up before I was to head out. They were instructed to ring the bells and say over and over ‘The bride is coming!’ and then I would follow. It was something I had read about in a romance novel many years ago and it always stuck in my head. My in-laws told me that they received numerous phone calls on what a great detail it was!!!!

Ivory satin love knot ring bearer pillow
EBAY VENDOR2002_shadow Follow this link to their website- A+

I know a few other brides had gotten things from her as well, so I knew I would have no problems getting the pillow from her. She added a raspberry ribbon to it so that it would be a little more personalized and shipped it to me three days after I ordered it.

Rose petal cones and bubbles-
I didn’t initially think I was going to do the cones. Since we got married at the Westbury Manor it wasn’t like we were going to stay at an altar and take pics while everyone else went outside. Nor did we do a receiving line. I had to do petal cones so that people weren’t holding the petals the whole duration of the ceremony. I bought the doilies at AC Moore and used double sided table to keep them closed. I begged Laurie from LA Blossom to fill them for me. We also bought the bubbles at AC Moore and tied a pretty ribbon around the handle to make them nicer.

Bridal Party Gifts-
I had a really hard time figuring out what to get the ladies. Three are married and have really nice necklaces and other jewelry so I didn’t want to do that. They are also not in their teens, so a bag filled with beach or skin stuff just seemed cheesy to me. I decided on getting them Murano vases. I also paid for the bridal party to get the hair done (and my sister and nieces makeup) as well.

My something old I was lent two handkerchiefs as my something old. My mom lent me one that her grandmother had given her on her wedding day and Dan’s grandmother lent me one that she had herself. Something new was my dress. My something borrowed was my slip. I borrowed it from my sister. It was hers on her wedding day, August 24th, 1990. I had two something blues. A custom pair of boy short panties from www.Customglamgirl.com- (A+)
with Mrs. Ebenau printed on the back in rhinestones. I am so happy with them!!!! I ordered one panty in light blue (my something blue) and one panty in black. I thought they were too personal to tell anyone that asked, so I also purchased a blue Mariposa (butterfly) from www.BouquetJewels.com- (A+) to have inserted into my bouquet.

I saw the letters on a past brides bouquet and fell in love! I had to have them. I ordered one initial for my sister who was my matron of honor, one for each of my bridesmaids and one for my niece who was my junior bridesmaid. One of the letters was found before the ceremony on the ground. I am not sure if it was made poorly or the bridesmaid just didn’t care for her flowers properly because she left them behind at the end of the night too.

Cake topper- C
Follow this link to their website

I really liked dealing with Charity in the beginning. She seemed really excited to do the cake topper. When it was getting down to the wire (May 25th), she sent me an email saying she was sick and catching up on her work (fine), and she was going to go on a small trip with her family and come back and do my cake topper. Wasn’t too crazy about that but okay, that’s small stuff right? I had to email her June 15th to find out the status. Amazingly she was working on it and it was scheduled to be done the next week. I emailed her again on June 27th to find out the status again and to get a tracking number. I received it that afternoon; 3 days before the wedding even though her website states that you get it a month before the finished date.

Card Box-

This was a DIY project. I knew I wanted something different that I would be able to use again. I also wanted to attempt a DIY project. I always loved the look of Lori’s (and Richard’s :) AKA 103005FallBride. I loved that it was wooden and I’d be able to engrave our monogram into it. We bought a wooden planter box at AC Moore’s for $9 and stained it Colonial Oak. We used our Dremel to router our monogram into it. It was SO simple to do. We bought our fabric at Joanne’s. That was the hardest part. I brought Dan along on this trip and he vetoed every fabric that I picked up. That was the hardest part of the whole project. So we bought three yards to cover it and have a flat panel for the bottom to hide where I glued it on (actually we bought so much just in case I fudged up!). I cut it to the size I needed and made a slit in it. I had my mom help me hot glue the fabric on (I needed three hands). I got many compliments on the finished product.

Wish bowl sign-

This was a DIY project. I saw this on LIW and thought it would be great to add some of these to my scrap book that my sister is making for me. I used a glass bowl that I had gotten from my cousins wedding from the CP from the table. I printed up a sign on vellum paper that I bought at AC Moore. I copied the Bonnie-Jean & Daniel from our invitations and printed it on paper that I cut up into little cards. I was a little disappointed because I noticed midway through our reception that the sign and the bowl where not near each other so no one knew to do it. Therefore I only got about 15 and a lot were from my nieces.

Seating Signs-

This was a DIY project. I knew from the beginning that I did NOT want to write out seating cards for my guests. My hand writing is ok. My patience towards the end was not. Thankfully I had decided a long time ago to print up alphabetical signs with my guest’s names and their table numbers. I put the kids names too since they sat at their own table.

Kids Table CP-

This was a DIY project. I had planned on having one table in the beginning for all my nieces and nephews between the ages of three and thirteen. There are thirteen of them. I went to Target and bought small items from the 99cents aisle and the toy aisle. I got pick-up sticks, suduko, Old Maid, Go Fish, mini Jenga, and some other stuff. I also found from a past bride (sorry I can’t remember who you are) a coloring book that she had printed up with a mini story. I edited it in word adding our names and the bridal party names. It was a HUGE success. Even the adults were admiring them! They loved how we had thought ahead of time about keeping the kids busy. As people started RSVPing with kids, I realized that I would have to have two kids tables so I made up two buckets. The day before the wedding we dropped everything off at Westbury Manor and were told that we didn’t have enough room for the extra table that I had created. Fortunately they had a table that sat all fourteen kids (which is really what I wanted in the first place!). They put both buckets on the one table.

Favors-

I ordered the boxes from Papermart.com
I put two colored ribbons around the box and sealed it with a monogram sticker from Myownlabels.com-. I really liked how simple it was and how nice they looked. (They were really simple since my mom packaged all of them for me : )

Photo Save the Date Magnets
EBAY VENDOR Designs By Heidi Follow this link to their website- A+

We needed to let our OOT guests know about the wedding and to hold the date for us. She was recommended by another bride on LIW (thanks Chrissy AKA dbleplay17). Heidi was extremely helpful and very reasonably priced. We emailed her a picture and she had a proof ready for us the next day. She shipped them to us very neatly packaged. They were exactly what we wanted. I bought the cards and envelopes at Target and printed them up myself.

Bridal Party Cards-

This was a DIY project. I wanted to ask the girls to be in my bridal party with a card and a dinner. I was too excited and just asked them when I saw them. Because my sister lives out of state, the dinner didn’t happen. I made the cards anyway and this is what they looked like.

Registry- A
Bed Bath and Beyond- they had everything I wanted and then some more! We originally did Fortunoff too, but we liked so much more at BB&B. After the wedding, I did see my dishes cheaper at Fortunoff so I would recommend looking around at prices. I did and I found them several dollars cheaper in stores online so I went back to BB&B with printouts of their competition and they credited me the difference.

MOB dress, sand ceremony vase, jewelry- B
The Wedding Center (Commack)

My mom had ordered her gown there and asked me to go pick it up with her. We went during the week at 5:00, so we thought it would be empty, it was packed. You had to write your name down on a list to be helped. My mom felt that she was paying a lot of money so she said something. A woman helped her which I thought was really nice of her. The dress came in exactly as promised. She didn’t price match anywhere, but I am told you can’t get cheaper than them.

I had called months earlier to see if they had any plus sized brides maid dresses to try on. I specifically mentioned size 24 and was told they had lots so I drove all the way out there to find that they only had ONE. I was thinking total waste of time, gas and patience.

I did buy the vases for the sand ceremony there. I also bought a necklace and earrings to wear, but Dan bought me a pair of diamond and pearl earrings that he gave me at the rehearsal dinner (only because I strongly hinted about a certain surprise wedding gift for him ). My niece wore the necklace the day of, so it wasn’t a complete waste.

Starr Dance Studios- C
On Route 110
They were good, their prices were not. We had 5 lessons with a little old lady named Harry, I mention old because I felt that she forgot what we did after each lesson even though she swore she wrote it down. She also kept saying that I wasn’t catching on to some of the moves even though she hadn’t gone over them with me! I wish that I had waited until closer to the wedding because I feel like I forgot a lot of what she taught us. If it wasn’t for the fun that Dan and I had, I probably would give them an F.

Best Western Bal Harbor, Massapequa- FFFFFFFF
For my bridal shower, my sister stayed at the Best Western with her daughter and her friend (Terri). The morning of my shower, they left their room for about ten minutes to load their car and some other things. When they returned, the maid had been there and all was well. That was until Terri went to put on her watch and go to the car. Her watch couldn’t be found. They searched all over the place and didn't find it. They went to the front desk and was speaking to the woman at the desk telling her about the *** watch and another woman says I cleaned that room, I didn't steal your watch. Terri says to her, I didn't accuse you, why are you jumping to that conclusion? So the staff promised to search for the watch and they all left. Terri got a call around 12:00 from Best Western saying they looked all over and couldn't find the watch, check your luggage, cause sometimes things get lost in all the pockets. So at the end of the night they go through the luggage and nothing. They tore the room apart. They finally empied Terri's dirty laundry bag and low and behold, the watch appears. It was obviously messed with. It needed to be repaired. My sister complained to the management the next morning and will also file a complaint with the Best Western chain.

Thank you cards-
Photo Card Creations

I am so in love with them. We were so undecided about what pictures to put in, we wanted to share them all!!!!

They are 5'x5'. The card scanned a little grainy since they are printed on linen paper, but in person they are beautiful! They also came with matching envelopes that we had our address printed on.

The company was wonderful to work with!

7.2.09
Three years (and a day) later and DH and I still look back at the amazing time we had with all our family and friends. We have gone back to Westbury Manor for our anniversary each year and still fall in love with the place every time.
