Need info. to settle a friendly debate: wedding related
What is the difference between Maid vs. Maitron of honor? One you are married & the other you are not.
Can you be a maid if you are married?
Does one hold higher status than the other?
TIA
Love ya PrincessAurora

As far as I know, a Maid of Honor is an unmarried woman. A Matron of Honor is a married woman. And no, one does not hold higher status than the other (at least I never thought so!)

I dont think its a matter of higher status but rather a matter of respect...we tend to pay more respect to older people...but in this case a maid of honor could be older than the matron of honor so...sorry not meant to cause confusion...

You should both be called a Matron as a sign of respect - as for walking order, she can determine that. My cousin had two at her wedding. One a best friend and one was her SIL, she had her SIL stand on the altar with her and sign the marriage license.

She is insisting to call me her maid not matron and I keep telling her that I am a matron. She feels maid means closer

You are both Matrons. Maid is an unmarried woman and Matron is married. She has two matrons of honor. As far as I know, neither has 'rank' over the other.
I mean, she can call you 'Albert' if she wants too, but traditionally you areboth Matrons since you are both married.

I had a maid and a matron of honor and if the maid were married, I would have had 2 matrons. I think your friend wants to make a distinction between the two - maybe for programs? Or maybe to make one feel more important than the other.

Re: Need info. to settle a friendly debate: wedding related
Okay girls,I KNOW that a matron is married and a maid is not, but when i asked Kelly to be my maid she was NOT married, so she is my maid of honor !
I have a cousin and a friend who both had maid of honors that were married! So does it really matter?
So dont you all think Kelly should just accept the position as is and be honored.
Kelly you know i love ya too, but i dont do things the same way just because others do

Now answer this girls...What if you were the last of all your firends to get married, which means all your firends are married. Wouldnt your maid of honor be married then. There has to be an 06er that has been in that situation.

Yes, she would be married and would be called a Matron of Honor!

As others have stated:Maid is unmarried
Matron is married
Both hold the same status and both have the same jobs...neither is 'closer' in terms of label

Re: Need info. to settle a friendly debate: wedding related
My cousin was my matron of honor, but I kept calling her my maid of honor because that's the terminology I was used to and she didn't mind at all. In fact she preferred that I called her my maid of honor instead of matron because she thought matron made her sound like she was old.And even though she was not married when you had asked her, the minute she became married she became your matron of honor instead of your maid of honor. Silly I know, but that's how it is.
If you want to be technically correct, then it's matron. If you all don't give a flying crap about being correct about titles, then call her your maid of honor. There are bigger things to worry about!!
