Random question for people with cats

does your cat ever just scream out a meow for no reason?
Gunnar is presently in the other room, screaming at the top of his lungs (not even a meow) and i know when i go in there, nothing will be going on.....

Re: Random question for people with cats

Yes...but I know his meows (I'm very weird). He's either bored, hurt or 'talking' for attention. And one of his weird meows woke me up not too long ago, there was a fire in my building and we were sleeping, he wouldn't shut up!

Re: Random question for people with cats

My male does this all the time. I always tell DH its because he sees ghosts. It's cute, but not when he starts at 7am.

Re: Random question for people with cats

My kitty is so old now she never meows anymore.

Maybe taking him to the vet to make sure he's not experiencing anything distressing? Or, maybe it's just his personality. Maybe he's singing!

Re: Random question for people with cats

Having had a male and a female together, I can tell you the male was way more talktative than the female.

He would let our weird meows on occasion, but it was mainly when he was standing by a door that led downstairs that he liked investigating. So I know he was saying 'Hey!! Open this door and let me downstairs!!!'

Other than that, the only strange meows I recall is when they go nuts and start running rampant around the house like lunatics.

Yes, sometimes my cats starts meowing for the hell of it. It's usually for attention or food.

Yes, my cat does this too. He runs around like a crazy cat.
I think it's hysterical unless I'm trying to sleep.
What is up with that!?

That's what my cat does. She also will give you the most pathetic 'oh woe is me' look and let out a silent meow. All I can do is laugh!

do any of your cats not actually meow, but scream as if someone is ripping the skin off his/her body?

Umm, no. That sounds a little scary!!

My cat does cry randomly for no reason. And if she's playing with something, she'll sometimes make this very odd not quite meow - more of a ?sob?

Whoa! Taking him to the vet can't hurt. Just have him tested and make sure he's okay. I'd hate to think the poor thing was in pain and this was the only way he could express it. He's probably fine (and just eccentric) but better safe than sorry.

Re: Random question for people with cats

see, he sounds like he's in pain, but when i go over to him, he walks over to me as if nothingi s wrong - so i think it's just an attention thing. but i don't understand the need for the screaming.

it's probably just one more way he's found to torture me.

i wonder if he does it when we're not home and people walking by think we torture our cat......

Re: Random question for people with cats

My cat did! We thought he might have heard other outdoor cats and howled for their attention! It was like bloodly murder cries!

ETA: My cat did have stomach problems which he died from, but I could tell when he was in pain. It was a different cry, and he kind of arched his back to make his tummy feel better. He would also drool when he was in pain and panting.
