Re: NWR seriously disturbing

I know this is so very disturbing but I actually feel bad for the teen who did this to her unborn child. What could make someone feel so helpless and desperate that they would kill their child? What a sad life some people live

sending prayers to the young baby who lost their life so young

Re: NWR seriously disturbing

There may be a lot of reasons why she did it although i can't find it in my heart to justify it. She may have been raped, molested, or just straight scarred. Whatever the reason, my prayers are with her and the deceased child

Re: NWR seriously disturbing

Stories like this just go to show you that there is NOT enough publicity for the save haven law, which allows a mother to 'abandon' her baby by leaving it at a hospital or police station without being charged criminally with abandonment or anything else.

See I never even heard of that before! I bet that young girl didn't either!

Re: NWR seriously disturbing

'Safe Haven' laws:
By 2003-MAR-11, 42 states had enacted 'save haven' laws which permit a person -- usually a parent -- to abandon a newborn baby, at a specified location. This may be a hospital, firehouse, or police station. State laws differ:

Some states allow a newborn to be simply handed to a doctor or police officer.
The threat of criminal prosecution may be either reduced or eliminated, depending on the state.
Some state laws allow the parent to remain anonymous; others require the person who receives the newborn to attempt to establish the identity of the parent and obtain a medical history.
Some states place a limit on the age of the newborn who can be abandoned. The intent of this limit is to emphasize the importance of surrendering a newborn to a place quickly where he or she can receive proper care. If a parent is hiding their baby, it may not be receiving proper care and food.

Re: NWR seriously disturbing

The intent of the law was to save the lives of newborns whose mothers had concealed their pregnancy, given birth alone, and then discarding the newborn in a hazardous location -- in a trash can, dumpster, park, forest, canal, church, carwash, somebody's front door, etc. Many states passed this legislation in response to a tragedy which caused the death of a newborn. The names of these laws differ: Safe Haven, Save Place, Baby Moses Law, Safe Arms for Newborns, Safe Delivery, etc.

Re: NWR seriously disturbing

Texas House Bill 3423, which went into effect on September 1, 1999, was the first. The law allows a 'parent or other person who is entitled to possess a child 30 days old or younger' to voluntarily leave that child in the possession of an emergency care provider. The abandoner is legally immune to prosecution as long as the child’s health was not endangered in the process of delivery.

Nowhere does the law require that the parent or person leaving the child identify her/himself. Nowhere does the law require that the parent or person leaving the child sign any document relinquishing parental rights. Nowhere does the law state that the parent or person leaving the child provide any familial medical information. Nowhere does the law provide for a change of mind within any period of time. And nowhere does the law require the state to try to obtain any information.

In Alabama, it’s called 'A Secret Safe Place for Newborns' and program materials stress that there will be no questions asked. Newborns up to 72 hours old can be dropped off at emergency rooms of participating hospitals with total secrecy, and a guarantee that the police will not be called for abandonment. No identification, no signed relinquishment papers, no medical history.

Under the Minnesota program, called 'A Safe Place for Newborns,', a mother can anonymously drop off an unharmed newborn without fear of prosecution. She will be asked to volunteer medical information, but not required to do so. No identification required, no signed relinquishment, no mandatory medical information.

However, both the Alabama and Minnesota programs include giving the mother an identity bracelet that will match her with her child in the event she changes her mind.
