Insurance for Engagement Ring

Need some references on Insurance companies for a non-home owner on an engagement ring from that company w/ the tial blue box logo. Any leads would help.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

Hi!

First you need to get renters insurance and then you can do a separate ring policy.

I checked out the following companies:

Geico
AllState
State Farm

I ended up with State Farm because Geico didn't write that type of policy in NJ where I live and AllState never called me back. The prices of all the policies were somewhat comparable (Geico being the least, but, the company they outsource renters to doesn't do ring insurance in NJ).

ETA: When my FH had it, he added it to his parents homeowners insurance since he lives at home (we were going to a Yankee game the night before he proposed so it was going to be sitting in his car and he didn't want me to have to rush out and get insurance as soon as he gave me the ring, which was good because I had some issues getting it!)

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

It's on my homeowners insurance but it was also on my renters. Not expensive at all.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

I actually went through my parents homeowners insurance (I do not yet have the privilege of owning a very ridiculously priced piece of L.I. real estate) and got a separate rider. Whatever company you decide to go with make sure that the ring would be covered even if lost or stolen abroad. I was told some policies do not cover this. Hope this helps.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

Allstate doesn't do personal property insurance - they put it under a homeowners policy.

I got insurance through state farm.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

FH insured mine through Liberty Mutual. He added it as a rider to our renters insurance. The price per year is based on the value of the contents on your apartment and then the value of the ring.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

I have State Farm and I'm happy-- they are very nice and it was reasonably priced.
FYI... they told me that ring's in general (not just their policy) do not get insured for the appraised value, they get insured to replace the exact color, clarity, cut, and size of the ring... so basically, you get the SAME ring you had before.
He said that the GIA certificate is needed b/c it is written on there the color, grade, cut, clarity, size, etc. And if you could, get a jeweler to low-ball the appraisal you have to give them because you are paying premiums on THAT amount--not the TYPE of ring it is because remember, they are just replacing the SAME kind of ring so why pay higher premiums if you don't have to??
If you have any ?s, this stuff can be confusing, feel free to FM me!!
Our jeweler did us a favor and low-balled my $$ amount appraisal to make it a little cheaper on the premiums because the insurance company is just going to replace the exact ring (based on the GIA cert) I have no matter what it's value $$ is written as.

Re: Insurance for Engagement Ring

I went to my car insurance company - State Farm, and they wrote up a personal property policy. My ring is fully insured with no deductible, and the premium was very inexpensive.
