proof that location changes price quotes!!!

Just got this email from a hair person. I understand charging a travel fee. But how does the location change your ability to blow out hair?!?!?! Or is hair harder to work with in NYC vs Long Island?

I was originally quoted $75 for updos for my girls, now it's $100!!!

I was not aware that you were getting ready in Manhattan. My rates are entirely different for the city.

I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience for you

Out of State and NY City Fees:
Hourly Travel Fee - 50.00 (Advanced payment required)
Bridal Updo - 150.00
Other Updos - 100.00
Blow Styles - 55.00 & Up Long hair extra
Five Person Minimum (consisting of updos)

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

All vendors will charge a travel fee if it is not close by. (Usually anything more than 25 miles). It has nothing to do with NYC vs LI, it has to do with gas, tolls, having to get up earlier and allowing for more time in case of traffic, etc. Also sometimes especially hair and makeup people, they may have more than 1 wedding in a day. If they have to travel far, that may take away money they could make doing another wedding. So you have to take that into consideration as well.

You are paying not only for the person's talent, but their time, and when it comes to weddings, let's face it, time is money.

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

the person I hired to do my hair also tried to 'up' her prices on me. Saying she misquoted me to begin with. I had it in writing what she told me orginally. This was AFTER I gave her a non-refundable deposit to hold my date. In the end she kept the rates she quoted me after I told her I didn't think my girls would pay that much. ($25 more than what she orginally quoted me).

As it was, she didn't show up on my wedding day.....

yes, but the vendor should have told her UPFRONT before she booked her what her travel prices are. Not one month before her wedding!

It would take longer for her to get to some parts of Long Island (she's based in Queens) than to Manhattan. I would have been willing to pay for a town car for her to get there and back but the fact the she upped her service prices by that much just because of location...

I hear you on that one. All of the fees should be laid out in advance including travel fees.

Ahhhh I see what you're saying now. (I'm tired, so excuse me)

Not only is she charging a travel fee, but ALSO raising the price?? No, that's definitely not right to do.

I can understand the travel fee. I don't understand prices being higher for being in manhattan.

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

The additional blow out fee? What the F? Have you tried Claudia Pedala for hair? She's actually located in NYC so she wouldn't charge an additional fee. I used her and she was so great (I used her sister Maureen for makeup).

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

I would respond with something like:

“I'm sorry you feel the need to charge me so much more money just for doing hair in Manhattan vs. Long Island. I didn’t realize you had overhead which required you to charge so much more.

In addition, I am sorry I have wasted my time with you.”

The absolute nerve of her to charge a travel fee AND more $ per person!

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

do you have a contract? did you give her a deposit to hold your date? You might be able to get out of the contract and get your $$ back due to the fact that she didn't quote you correctly when you booked her.

I know that they all charge a travel fee... but a point blank mark up is ridiculous and I would confront her!

Re: proof that location changes price quotes!!!

Cancel the contract. Get your money back. She can't change her fees...the contract is null and void. You didn't sign a contract for those prices. She didn't do her due diligence. Travel fee is one thing. More money to do the hair. That's just insane.

She loses.

I didn't have a contract with her...thank goodness. This was just for my bridal parties hair - all 5 of them!! plus my mom. I just emailed her and told her that I would have paid for your transportation but I don't understand the markup. I'll have to look somewhere else.

I felt like writing - good luck trying to get the same business this last minute.

I'm really disappointed because this isn't the first vendor that has done this. And I specifically looked only for vendors within the outerboroughs or just on the border of Nassau County so distance wouldn't be such an issue or as much of an excuse. Ugh!
