Sad Day Today

After quite a long time spent wondering, the neurologist confirmed today that my 25 year old nephew has Huntington's Disease. We've been begging him for years to find out, but he didn't want to know, until he started seeing the signs himself, and he lost his balance and fell down a set of stairs in the subway and broke his ankle.

It is an extremely debilitating disease with no cure. The earlier the symptoms manifest, the shorter the life span.

His mom has been confined to a nursing home for the last 6 years, and no longer has any substantial cognitive brain function. She can't do anything at all for herself. She is only 52 years old. She didn't start showing signs until she was at least 10 years older than he is now.

My entire family is just beside themself with grief right now.

I am so sorry. I wish I knew the right thing to say but I don't. I am glad he has people like you in his life to take care of him.

Thanks Leslie! I'm his mom's health care proxy and I've spent the last month dealing with some complications that have arisen with her (she had surgery last week), and now this news on top of it.

Puts the whole ecru invitations into context.
