nwr - chicken in the fridge - updated LOL
i bought a package of raw skinless chicken thin sliced and put it in the refrigerator.it says on the package 'freeze or consume before oct 10th'
now, this package has been in the fridge since last sunday , oct 2nd. i was going to cook it on monday but that did not happen.
should i trash it? or is it safe to cook and eat today?
well, i went home, opened it, and it had a 'hint' of a fish smell, so i chucked it.
there goes $6.00. i decided that since fh told me to buy the chicken, i spent $6.00 on something i like today- stuffed hot cherry peppers. OMG they are so good!!!
lol i feel so funny updating it, but im bored!

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
I would get rid of it. I don't know much about cooking, but in the fridge for a week not frozen does not sound good.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
i would either cook it or put it in the freezer... before you cook it though, give it a smell just to make sure, but since it is still before the date i think you may still be safe...

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
I don't like to waste anything, but if it's going to save someone from possibly getting sick (even just a belly ache)...it's worth wasting a few bucks. I'd throw it out.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
Toss it-chicken is funny. You never know, and you dont want to find out if its gone bad by getting sick.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
TOSS in my opinion, but do not refreeze....if it is already unfrozen and has been sitting in the fridge you should not refreeze it

agree. it has been in there a little too long - better safe than sorry (esp. when there are SO many food-borne diseases!)

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
I would cook it......as long as it didn't have any hint of a funny smell. FH who is SUPER crazy with stuff like this would have tossed it IMMEDIATELY! Can't wait till we live together to see what happens!!

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
trash it! Defrosted in the fridge for a week? I think it can only be in the fridge for 2 days or so uncooked? Id stay on the safe side.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
I would toss it - I never leave chicken in the fridge more than 2 days at the MOST. It's not worth the risk.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
Wow-everyone is split on this. Well here's my 5 cents. I cook a lot and have had chicken in the fridge for a week with a current expiration date. If you want to give it a shot, take it out of it's plastic packaging and feel it. If it feels slimy-toss it. If it doesn't wash it off, give it a sniff and you will be able to tell if you would eat it. Also the color should be consistent on each piece of chicken. If the color is off on one piece most likely it has contaminated the other pieces.Good luck and let us know what you did.

Re: nwr - chicken in the fridge
Smell it. If it smells okay and has the typical chicken color, it's probably safe to eat.

Yeah, I don't mess around with any meat. I feel your pain. I bought 2 Porterhouse Steaks mid last week and forgot to freeze it before I went away this weeked. Needless to say one was brown and the other smelled nasty. Had to chuck it. Wasted $15.
