Preparing for the world's first face transplants


The whole article is pretty scary, this is what terrified me the most: critics say the operation is way too risky for something that is not a matter of life or death, as organ transplants are. They paint the frighteningly surreal image of a worst-case scenario: a transplanted face being rejected and sloughing away, leaving the patient worse off than before.

I was watching a show on this the other night! The show started off with a story of an 11 year old Indian girl who got one of her braids caught in some kind of machine she was using and it ripped her ENTIRE face off! Ears and everything! It was so gross - it looked like a mask. But the surgeons managed to transplant her face back (minus one of the ears).
I couldn't watch any more.......it was too graphic for me

Annie you seriously almost made me vomit!

As bad as that is, at least it was the little girl's same face. But getting the face of a deceased person? OMG...that's really extreme.

Just watch - I'm sure there will be a lot of people who would want to transplant the face of a recently deceased loved one onto a willing candidate who'd get paid big bucks to pretend to be the deceased.

That would just be sick!!!!

I will say though, that even though it sounds so icky - the whole process-I can imagine that if it works, it could be so wonderful for people who have been badly disfigured by burns or something. And I would think your bone structure would be a big part of how it looks anyway, so maybe in the end it is just more like skin rather then looking like a whole someone elses face?

I think its pretty gory, but I'm glad they're trying it. Think of all the people who have horrible burns all over their face etc.. this is a chance at a new life for some.
