Passport Question - HELP!

I've never had a passport before. Supposedly, they just changed the rules for Aruba (HM). Should I put my current last name or my new name. I will use this when I go to Aruba for my honeymoon. By then, I will have my new last name...

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

My sister just went through the same thing, she used her old last name & carried a copy of the marriage license with her.
Give yourself enough time to get one, the rush fees are high.

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

I'm pretty sure that if you're getting your passport before your wedding, so it would have to be in your current, legal name (the same one which is on the documentation you're submitting).

I just spent $182 to replace my lost passport. Man, those rush fees hurt!

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

You wont be able to put you new last name until you have legal documentation to support it. (marriage license, etc). It will have to be in your current name.

It takes like 8 weeks normally to get it and you have to give them your birth certificate which they will mail back to you. So, if you need your BC for anything else beware.

Have Fun!!! Aruba is great!

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

You can get it done in 3 days paying the fees and fedex. You will have to use your current legal name.

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

Make sure you use your Maiden name on your Passport, you will need to have it coincide with the name on your plane ticket, which will be your Maiden name. I just got mine for our HM in St. Lucia and was told specifically not to use my married name.

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

For my passport I used my maiden name. This is what my travel agent told me to do since there won't be time to do the name change before-it's ok to do this.

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

we just used her madien name to book everything as the airlines needs to know whos traveling etc.... we had no problems..its a mere technicallatly (sp) about what is your last name... bring photo id with one of your names and you shoudnt have any problems.

next year 2006, you need a passport to travel outside the US as the law goes into effect

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

You cant use your married name before the wedding, you have to submit a birth certificate and license and yes the rush fees are insane, DH payed over 200 because we needed it asap like 4 weeks!!! we just came back from our HM to Aruba- it is beautiful FM me for info if you need- restaurants, hidden beaches- awesome on your own places to snorkel- we traveled the entire island.

The law goes into effect 2006- thats what everyone keeps saying- BUT if you call the post office they will tell you differently- my mother and grandmother just had to get theirs cause we are going to the bahamas the end of next month and they said its a requirement NOW!!!!

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

Yes, I keep hearing mixed reviews on weather or not we need a passport, but I will just to be safe! That's the last thing I need - not being able to get into Aruba on our honeymoon!

you will need one regardless for 06 so just go for it... but you can do birth certificate and license and you will be fine...when in doubt, ask your agent

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

Book your honeymoon under your maiden name. It takes time to change your name legally, and if you leave right away, there is no time.

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

I had had these same worries a few months ago (going to Aruba as well). We did everything in my maiden name and aren' t even going to think about the paperwork to change the name till we get back (we are leaving the day after the wedding, there would be no time)

Re: Passport Question - HELP!

I would put your maiden name on your ticket so that you can put your maiden name on your passport and then change it after the HM. That is what I did.

Tom, you're absolutely correct! Click here for the State Department's website on the new travel requirments for US citizens.

Click here for the State Department's passport page that explains name change/amenments.

You can also peruse the links on the left for rush fees, etc. I hope this helps!

Call the post office they will tell you differently- I know this says by 12/05 but we saw people on line in aruba having some major issues b/c they didnt have a passport- and that was to get into aruba the NEW passprot law is to enter or re-enter the US not the islands- I wouldnt mess around with it by just reading a website, my mom called the post office to be sure and she and my grandmother had to rush to get passports for july of 05 just to go to the bahamas!!!! Dont risk it- just go do it you have plenty of time so you dont have to pay any rush fees either and its good for 10yrs. when you change your name Im sure the process is easy- we all have to do it. good luck!
