OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
Looooong class today - so so boring.then I stopped at [unnamed store] on my way home from class - I needed a small gift for a friend that I'm going to see tonight.
I grabbed a purse and walked around with it for a while, but then decided that it was too $$$ to spend on a small gift, and just hung it where I happened to be standing. (it was mens dept at the time - I KNOW it was lazy of me to not return it to it's proper department, but I was in a rush.)
I go to leave the store, and was attacked by the store manager and store security!!! they grabbed my shoulders and walked me to a back room.
I kept asking why, but they said that they can't discuss anything until we were in private. I'm like, ooooookkkk....
We get in the private room, and he asks me to empty my bag! (I still had my large schoolbag with me - I DID go straight from school.) I'm like, 'Excuse me ma'am, may I ask why?' - She said that they saw me with a purse, then it disappeared, and they had reason to believe it was on my person.
I let them empty my huge bag (omg, i had the MOST embarassing stuff in there, including a spare pair of undies- it's a *bad week*, sorry if TMI) -- please explain to me how I could store a PURSE in the tiny zipper compartment inside my bag??!?!
After 1.5 hours in that hot little room, enduring tons of questioning, the assinine employees found the bag exactly where I had left it, and I was free to leave, but I was asked to never come back to said store again. They didn't even apologize!!!
This store is IN my hometown!!! I knew 5 of the 6 employees on shift. Soooooo humiliating.
I was informed that everything that was done was completely within legal limits. They had reasonable doubt, therefore, they had the right to hold and question me. But for 1.5 HOURS?!?! OMG.
So so so so scary. I felt like a criminal the way they accosted me at the front door, yelling 'security!!!'

Re: OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
That's AWFUL. I mean, if you told them where it wasn, why couldn;t they look for it immediately. AND WHY THE EFF would they ask you never to come to the store again. Clearly you had done nothing wrong. They should have given you a 20% off coupon or something, not kicked you out of the store. What a holes

Oh my gosh....that's awful that you had to go through with that....I would be so upset and humiliated myself. I can't believe how mean they were...ughh...well just take it easy and rewind the rest of the night....I'm sure your friend will understand if you don't get her a present. Marissa

Re: OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
Oh no..u were nice about that situation!I would of told them after the way they treated you and how they accused you of stealing that you are appalled by all this and would never step foot in their store EVER again!
Then I would proceed to tell them that
I would also tell people not to go there especially if you have to be watched and walk on eggshells in a store to then be accused and humiliated of a crime that was not done!
What the f^%$#*!
Lucky that wasn't me!
BTW> Sorry u dealt with that!

UUUGGGHHHH!!!!! How FECKING horrible!!! After they saw that you had nothing, what the hell did you need to stay for an hour and a half!!!! I am so sorry!
Not that you'd want to go back there, but can they legally tell you to stay away even though you did nothing?

Did you respond with NOT OVER MY DEAD BODY WOULD I SHOP HERE?!?!

Re: OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
Wow. I am truly sorry for what happened to you Nicole. I don't understand why they didnt just go look where you told them to in the first place.Get an attorney to write a comlaint on letterhead. Even if nothing comes of it, it may put a bit of a scare into them. I am sure you have one in your family or at least a friend.

Re: OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
There is a statute under the General Business Law of NY that gives shopkeeper's the privilege to detain a person based on reasonable suspicion of shoplifing. They can be detained for a reasonable amount of time. (Reasonable in both instances being a term of art). It is an exception to the false arrest laws. I haven't read up on the case law, but most likely 1 1/2 hours would be considered reasonable if that is how long it took to go through your stuff. Sorry
It must have really s u c k ed.

It IS horrible, but thanks guys.
I talked to a friend of mine who does security for the same corporation, and he said that everything done was perfectly legal, as long as I wasn't being tape recorded or handcuffed (which I wasn't)...
The reason I can't go back is due to the fact that I was IN the security room, therefore I know where all their cameras are and what isn't within camera range, if I ever wanted to steal in the future

I think it's bull, but according to my friend, it's their company policy.
Still... I'm pissed. This is a place I shop OFTEN!!!

Re: OMG, worst day. long, sorry.
I am so sorry you went throught hat today! what a load of crap that was. i would definetely write a letter to the head boss of that place and say how you were treated in that store and you did not do anything wrong, Give me a break now they wont let you go back in the store because they put you in the back where the security camera is! they should not have brought you back there in the first place YOU DID NOTHING WRONG!
I wouldn't want to go back to a store after going through something like that. Again I am sorry you went through that.
