Sure this has been posted-- but, what EXACTLY do I need for name change??

I am actually going to legally hyphenate.. so, nothing is a pressing issue- but where do I need to go and what do I need to do?

I already filled out my new name on the marriage license- but I don't think that means anything.

You need to fill out new Social Security forms and bring them down to the SS office along with your original birth certificate, drivers license and marriage license. They will then mail you your new card.

Once you have that, you can bring that to the DMV to get your new drivers license.

If you have a passport, you'll need to fill out forms and change that too.

You'll need to make the change at your bank.

All other stuff, bills, etc. can mostly be done over the phone. Although I found Cablevision needed me to fill out a form and show a copy of my new drivers license and a utility bill. (wierd huh?)

Most of the forms you need for SS, Passport and DMV can be downloaded from their web sites so you can fill them out ahead and save time.

Once you have that, you can bring that to the DMV to get your new drivers license.

The dmv i went to wouldn't give me a license without the SS card!

I did them both the same day - First I went to Social Security then DMV. They had given me a temporary one if I'm remembering correctly.

I didn't need the SS card for a new license either. I went to SSA on a Friday, DMV on a Monday.

Randi, I found this link helpful - it's a post from a bazillion years ago but it lists the things to remember. The major ones, though, are your social security card, your driver's license, health insurance, passport and credit cards.

get your marriage license, driver's lic, social security card, bank info, passport all together first.

the places you have to go to is your:
social security office
DMV
bank
passport - this should be last because you'll haev to mail yoru passport and marriage license to their department. you should get them back in a couple of months...?
