what percentage of your total wedding do you expect to get back from gifts?

fh is hoping to get all of what we put in back- around 12k which is 1/3 of our total cost.

I'm expecting nothing. If I was hoping to get it back, I just wouldn't have spent it. Will it be nice if we get some money? Of course, but I am not expecting ANYTHING.

FI thinks we're gonna get it all back in gifts but I know that's not gonna happen. He doesn't understand that not everyone will pay what their plate costs. I'll be happy if we get half back.

From what I hear from people - don't make any plans to spend money from your wedding. A friend gave me an example that she attending a wedding of a couple alone - she gave the couple $150 just for her... well, when it was her turn to marry the couple gave her $150 for BOTH of them!

To think of how many couples FH and I gave $200 to and thought that it was a good gift - it didn't even cover the cost of the meal... something I didn't think was the case until I started researching my for my own wedding.

I hear be happy if you break even. Just enjoy having a party and don't think about the gifts - if you get great - if not oh well.

We were SHOCKED we got back almost everything!

Considering FI's family is from Ohio, where it is considered tacky to give money as a gift - we are not expecting to make our money back.

The whole 'pay for your plate' thing is a completely northeast thing. We went to a wedding for his cousin a few years ago and he was SHOCKED when I suggested we write a check instead of bringing a gift....
