Mr. and Mrs. Doe-I found this way on a lot of websites.
My invitation lady (Paula from You're Invited to Celebrate, love her!) says that ettiquite calls for Mr & Mrs Smith, not the first names. But we all agree that it's a waste of an envelope. Paula suggests to put their first names.

Re: inner envelope question
I know this is going to sound stupid, but I have never seen anything on the inner envelope. I left mine blank.

Re: inner envelope question
If you want to go by my trusty Amy Vanderbilt Etiquette book, the outer envelope is Mr and Mrs John Doe and the inner is Mr and Mrs Doe. I'm doing it this way, but if you want to be less formal, John and Jane Doe is also acceptable for the inner envelope.

Re: inner envelope question
We are doing the first names. It seemed to make more sense to address the inner one by what we call people. (I forget what site I saw that advice from.. I'll see if I can find it.)

Re: inner envelope question
Mr. and Mrs. Doe or Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, either is correct. If you want to invite children, you add their names following the parents. For single guests, you would write Ms. Doe and Guest.

Re: inner envelope question
I think it sounds better with 1st names. There may be several Mr and Mrs Does bc you're all in the same family. Some forget to put their names on the response card so this may get confusing as to which Mr and Mrs. The first name would surely cut it down and make things easier.

Re: inner envelope question
I did Mr and Mrs. on the outside and first names on the inside, it was easier that way when there where children in the family.

Re: inner envelope question
i'm going with what i usu. call them.if it's 'mr. & mrs. so-&-so' and that's what i'm putting on the inner.
if it's 'joe and jane' (close friends), then that's what i'm putting.
can't see putting ms. 'lindsay so-&-so' for my sister when i call her just 'lindsay.'
