Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I have an appointment for May 31, yes, that far away, and I made it 2 weeks ago!

Anyone have underactive thyroid, and if so, how do you cope? My symptoms aren't that bad, but I am not like I was. I read the book by Dr. Blanchard, WHat your doctor doesn't tell you about hypothyroidism, and I was wondering if anyone has tried his 2% solution. This is 98% T3 and 2% T4.

I went to a supposed thyroid professional, and he ended up being nothing more than a wannabe MD out of his house who charged me $200 to tell me to go on a diet and lose 25 lbs.

Now, if you look at my picture, I don't know where I can get 25 pounds off from. 15 maybe, but 25, I would be so thin.

Anyway, I guess I am just looking for others in my situation to see what they do....

Thanks,

Gina

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

TMI------I have an underactive thyroid from having radiation treaments from cancer/hodgkins when I was 26/27 yrs old. I was told that eventually my thyroid would die off, well at that time I didn't care and I didn't know what my thyroid did, obviously I had other things on my mind as well. Well, a few years later my oncologist notice my thyroid was a bit low...and put me on synthroid, can I tell you it was bizarre, and a nightmare. I was reeved up to the point I was ready to start vacuuming the walls, and I wanted to use the dinner plates as frisbees. I was cleaning the corners of inside the kitchen cabinets. My heart was racing out of my chest...After 3 days of that, off of them I went. And it took about another 9 years to get me on the meds. It was still in my head that the meds would hate me and do this again, and I saw a shrink for this, that is how much this affected me. Fast forward to today, I am on my synthroid, it is fine, I'd like to have a little more in my dosage so I can keep on going like the engergizer bunny...but I really haven't lost any weight (lack of exercise and the ice cream), my hair still comes out (age?) but my skin is not as dry (and I have oily skin)....My boss, his wife takes the pig armoral instead of the synthetic 'syntroid' and a doctor I respect suggested the same to me, but I haven't switched. I went to an endo doctor and did not like her, but the different make ups of T3 and T4s does interest me b/c I REALLY think I am 'off' alittle in one the T's...do you know what I mean? I am on the same dosage for the last year, and I have read some books/stories and I think it is time to re-read books again. Getting the correct dosage is the key and a doctor you can trust and communicate comfortably with!

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I am so glad to hear that you are doing better!!!

I am on 50mcg of synthroid after my hair started thinning on the 25mcg. I am still a little hazy and need to have my levels tested again.

I guess I'll wait to see what this new MD says. If you want to learn a little mpre about the T3 and T4, the book by Dr. Balnchard was interesting. He spoke about Armour and other things as well.

If you find a good doctor, let me know. A friend referred a doctor in Valley Stream, so after the new guy I may go see her too.....

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I started at 88 then went down to 75 then up to 125. I might have been on another dose in between too but I don't remember. I have been on synthroid for 6 years.

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I have been on synthroid for 11 years--well first they started me on levotrhoid, but i think it's the same thing. i have been fine -- they had to keep switching my dosage in the beginning but I have been on .075 for like 8 or 9 years.

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I have two endos that I love, one if Great Neck and one in Smithtown. I remember the one in Great Neck talking about there is a small percentage of people that are not effecting by synthroid because their form of hypothyroidism originates from T4 and synthroid goes to the T3 first. I am on 112mcg of synthroid at this point. I have to go back at the end of May and I hope that they up it but I have been stable for well over a year even through the whole pregnancy.

Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions or want the name of either dr!!

Re: Thyroid problems and an endocrinologist...

I have been on synthroid .50 for the last 2 years. My doctor said my levels are only slightly off but enough to put me on medication. My thyroid is underactive. I seem to have insomnia more than extreme tiredness.
