Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

One of my BMs is going to be approx. 7 months pregnant at the wedding. We were about to order the dresses. I asked the dress store what to do & they suggested that she buy the fabric and have a dress made that looks similar to the other dress. Has anyone done this before? Can you recommend a good seamstress? We thought they could just order a bigger dress and fit it around her belly (she's very small to begin with - like a size 6) But they said it would cost lots of $$$ (like $120 minimum for just the alterations & the dress is $150.)

HELP! I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

ps - it's a Bill Levkoff dress & he doesn't make maternity BM dresses.

Re: Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

The day before we booked my BM dresses we found out one of my FSIL was pregnant so we ordered her the same dress just in the biggest size, and then 3 weeks later my other FSIL found out she was pregnant. Hopefully the dresses will fit, luckily the place we are getting the dresses from includes alterations. For you I would either order the same dress(esp that she is tiny now) just larger. Having someone make the dress and ordering the fabric will cost alot, depends on what you want to do? What color are the dresses? I understand just picking out the BM dresses is stressful enough! Good luck!

Thanks. That helps. Where did you order your dresses from? I went to Burton's and she strongly discouraged me from buying the big dress and altering it. Personally, I thought that was a better idea.

Re: Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

One of my bm is pregnant and my bridal salon told her to order the dress a little bigger and then come in early for the fitting to see if they can anticipate needing more fabric. That way if they do need more fabric to let it out a bit, they have time to order it from the company.

Re: Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

Did anyone else order a bigger dress & alter it? What dress store did you use? Burton's thought it was a bad idea. Maybe I should order it somewhere else.

Re: Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

one of my bridemaids will be 6 months prego at my wedding....the salon ordered the dress bigger and with extra length...its an empire waiste dress. The salon told us that the seamstress will cut the dress at the waiste and bring up the dress...to give her more room for her belly. The seamstress assured us that she has done this before with empire style dresses...and it looks very nice

One of my Bm's is 5 months pregnant, Burtons' ordered her dress 3 sizes bigger because of her breast size before she was pregnant and she ended up getting pregnant, but her dress was big enough that she doesn't need alterations.

When I was getting married one of my bridesmaids found out she was pregnant so when we ordered the dress they ordered it in a bigger size. My girls bought there dresses at David's Bridal in Carle Place.
It worked out fine and she was 8 months pregnant at my wedding.

Re: Pregnant bridesmaid dress question

I would check where you are getting the dresses--I have seen alot of maturnity BM dresses and some of them are really nice--maybe the designer you pick also makes them so that it won't cost alot of money in alterations. Just an idea
