Hawaii or Tahiti?

Looking at honeymoons.... this is the hardest decision we have to make! For those of you going to Tahiti... where are you staying... was it expensive... how long is enough for a relaxing trip? We have always planned on Hawaii but I keep feeling that it is too tourist trappy... but I always wanted to go!

Help!!! I don't want to be disappointed

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

I think both places are beautful in their own way and either way, it's a win-win trip. We chose Tahiti just because we feel that we can go to Hawaii any time. Tahiti felt more like a 'one in a life time' kind of trip.

We are staying at the Sheraton Tahiti, Sheraton Moorea and Bora Bora Nui. It will probably be around $7500 for the hotel and airfare.

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

We went to Hawaii and we didn't want the entire time to be touristy. We chose not to go to Oahu, Maui, or Honolulu. We went to Kaui, Big Island and Molokai which is so non-touristy. We spent 5 days in Molokai and it was heaven. Our travel agent was trying to convince us NOT to go to Molokai because there was no nightlife or 'things to do' but that is EXACTLY what we wanted! Also, since it isn't touristy, prices were fantastic. Our oceanview villa was something like $129 a night!

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

Without a doubt ... Tahiti. Hawaii is way too commercial .. it seems like everyone is always going there. Tahiti (well, more Moorea and Bora Bora and other surrounding islands) are so small and secluded. You won't find a McDonald's or a Walmart. It's an adventure and it's breathtaking. When we walked into our overwater bungalow in Bora Bora, all my husband could say was 'I don't deserve this' ... that's how amazing the feeling is!!

You should definitely go to Moorea and Bora Bora and other islands like Huahine if you have time. We went for 11 days. I think you need at least 3 days on each island.

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

We went to Tahiti , it was GREAT! We did a cruise so it was all inclusive except for drinks and shore excursions and it was a lot less $$ then stayng in the over water bungalows. We loved it... Go to Tahiti ! You will love it!

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

i think either place will be amazing, we ended up w/ hawaii because it was more in our 'budget'. i initially priced tahiti, overwater bungalows, and it came to about 12k, without air!!!! now you can do it cheaper w/o the overwaters etc. but if we were going to go, we were going to do it that way. i think a big part of it as well was the time of the year, we wouldve gone through thanksgiving week, so that adds to the price as well! we cruise every february, but if we didnt i would definitely take a cruise around tahiti, you will save a ton of $$$.
We are going to hawaii, for about 6500 we are staying 6 nights in maui, 6 nights in kauai, at the hyatts. that includes breakfast for 2 everyday as well as a rental car on each island, r/t air and all interisland flights. i just couldnt justify spending 20k on 12 days, honeymoon or not!

nah I dont think its a once in a lifetime trip- I think it would be a good anniversary trip to be honest. that and Africa. Also thats pretty cheap for Tahiti Ive seen it much more than that, who is your travel agent? oh wait is that pp that would make sense then. thanks for the info.

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

i'm surprised a previous poster got a quote of 12k for overwater bungalows. we went to 3 islands for 11 days and stayed in overwanter bungalows in each (intercontinental hotels) and paid about 7-8k. That was without any meal plans and without the flights. I guess you just need to find a good travel agent.

Re: Hawaii or Tahiti?

I think Tahiti is definitely the way to go!

FH and I are going there for our HM and went to Hawaii in August of 2003.

Tahiti is a once in a lifetime trip (which is what a HM should be!)

Hawaii was gorgeous, but we can always get there again!

I had a great travel agent and i shopped around quite a bit. i am sure the prices have increased since you booked your hm, and like i said, the HM also falls into the thanksgiving week, which is always higher priced. i also believe it was w/ pearl resorts which might have something to do w/ the price. the other travel agents i spoke to gave me about the same price! you got a great deal, and i wouldve booked on the spot if someone offered me tahiti for 8k!!!!
