Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

I was just wondering if your vets explained to you that there are two different procedures and if he gave you a choice? Mine did not, and it wasn't til after the procedure when I asked more questions did he tell me this. I don't know if I should be upset with not being given the choice or not. I would really like to know what other vets do.

One procedure totally removes the sac and the testes. There are more stitches involved and this was why Scooby had a hard time for a full two weeks. He was very unhappy, had a lot fo discomfort from the stitches, and he wanted to be carried and held all the time. He had to wear that horrible cone constantly because he wanted to get to his stitches. Also Scooby was kept at the animal hospital for 24 hours after the procedure was performed.

The other procedure requires a tiny incision which allowed the vet to push the testes up though the penis. The dog needs just a stitch or two and can go home in a shorter period of time. The little sacs remain. From what I hear the dogs recover very quickly and most don't even bother their little stitch.

Which did your dog have and did your vet give you a choice?

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

That's how I felt - I didn't find out til after Scooby had his done. The vet explained his reasons for removing it all, and I probably would have trusted his judgement anyway. But why shouldn't we be the ones to make the decision?

Was your dog neuterized? Does he still have his little balls - or are they gone?

Poor babies

The vet did assure me that it is better in the long run. It rules out blood accumulating there and maybe causing problems later in their lives.

I really hope we hear from other girls as well. I really would like to know what they had done.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

I think the reason the 2nd option isnt discussed much because it is more of a cosmetic option. The 1st procedure is one where it is the most safe long term for the animal. Can you believe there are things called Neuticles? They are things the vet puts into the male dogs' area so macho men can get thier male dogs neutered and still look they they have a "manly" dog.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

I didn't know there was more than one procedure either! We just had Golem neutered on Monday, and our vet never mentioned anything about options, so I just always assumed there was only one way of doing this. Golem was neutered on Moinday and had to stay overnight, but when we brough him home on Tuesday, he was back to his normal self by that night - just a little sleepier than usual. He's completely fine now, He licks at it every once in a while, but it's like it never happened!

ETA - oh yeah, his little balls went bye-bye

ridiculous, like the dog really knows he doesn't have testicles anymore!!! And what owner would be so shallow that something like this would interest them?? This is just another example of how people turn dogs into little humans... the humanization of America's pets once again rears it's silly head!!

Well I totally humanize Murphy! He is my son after all, but in a positve way of course.
But I agree with you, the poor dog needs plastic shoved in there?

Oh, I know - Golem is totally my little baby boy! I talk about him as if he was my son too, but like you, in a positive way
I'm talking about the ridiculous extremes that some people go to..... implants for dogs is just absurd!

Can't you just hear the vets laughing as they run to the bank??

Scooby is definitely my baby boy. I never understood the love people could have for an animal til I got him. I already am counting the years they expect to live, and how old I will be then if I out-live him, and I don't like the numbers I come up with. It's Crazy!

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

Well, if I may be graphic.... I had a dachsund about 15 years ago. We had him neutered. When he came home, he had what looked like an empty sac. It looked like there was still skin for testicles to be in but it was empty. Eventually, that skin shrunk, but there was still a small sac. I wonder which procedure he had.

I had not thought about this stuff in years BUT we just got another dachsund, yesterday. He is also male. I guess I'd have it done the same way again. I don't remember the last one having much pain. I have not had a dog since 1997 when my first dachsund died!!!! So far, so good, but it has been only 1 day.

Good luck ssdbk with your new dachsund. Is he is puppy? I'm sorry to hear about your other dog. You must be so excited to have a little one in your house again.

Your first dog definitely had the second procedure that I described. Scooby had the other where the sacs were completely removed and there is just nothing there under his tail. His little penis was not bothered, and I must say he looks very neat this way. The things you learn.

Thanks for responding and again, all the best.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

Hi-----My other dog lived about 9-10 years, so it's not like his life was really cut short by a lot. He had back problems, as dachsunds do. Life became more difficult, he was not paralyzed but had very little feeling in his back legs. He had very little control over his bladder. I was living with my parents at the time and they made me put him to sleep.

I sometimes wonder if the neutering procedure had any affect on his back or on his bladder. I know it did not cause all of the problems, but did it make anything worse?

My new dachsund is almost 1 year old. He came to us fully housetrained (just 2 days ago, so far, so good in 2 days). A friend of a friend was getting divorced and neither spouse was able to take the dog. They asked me because they remembered that I love dachsunds. We need to work on teaching him not to beg for food and not to jump up and try to steal from people's plates!!!! Other than that he is a little angel so far.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

I'm happy for you - and for him. He seems to have found the perfect mommy.

I'm still new in the puppy department. Scooby is our first dog ever, and even though we have him since Sept., I often just scratch my head and wonder if what I'm doing is right.

Any tips you can pass along on this forum will greatly be appreciated.

Well, this feels a little bit new to me also. It has been a few years since I had the other dachsund.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

In the 18 years that my DH has been a vet, he has never used Neuticals...but he did bring home a pair for me to see (I thought he was joking, I didn't think this would actually exist! Amazing the things they think of!)

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

Kathy, I'm so happy you responded to this. Do you mind finding out from your DH which neutering procedure he uses and if it's a rule for the vets not to give us a choice between the two.

Thanks.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

I have a friend whose Boxer had the 2nd procedure. So, he has an empty sac. According to her, her vet said it was less invasive to leave the sac.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

Ok, I asked him ,

Neutering procedures are standard throughout the world (as being for male dogs) a removal of only the testicles through an incision in the prepuce area above the penis, where the testicles are pushed up into (they are not removed through the scrotal sac or through the penis, both are left alone and not involved).

This is the standardized neutering procedure. Other techniques used rarely because of the potential complications are not logical to use routinely so therefore, are not discussed by the veternarians:

These are scrotal ablation (removing the scrotal sac) and vasectomey (cutting the vas deferens and leaving everything else: problem, can still have testicular tumors, prostate conditions, pernial conditions and perianal tumors because they are not removed). Again, both are illogical because of the difficulty, expense to the client, and relatively high frequency of complication.

Neutering as prior discussed, rarely has a problem with blood accumlation in the scrotal sac, if done correctly.

The routine neuter is way preferred because the scrotal sac will shrink.

Re: Which neutering procedure did your dog have?

Kathy, thank you very much for the explanation - and thank your husband.

I wish I had known all this before Scooby's scrotal ablation. The poor puppy had a very hard two weeks, as did we. Fortunately, however, he had no complications and he recovered completely.
