I so dread holidays with my relatives . . .long story-vent

My godmother and FH got off to a really bad start (I guess it was 6 mos into us dating.) See, my godmother thinks she can bust everybody's chops but then can't take the kidding around back. So one holiday, I forget which one, my aunt was really doing a number on my FH about needing her permission to marry me and yada yada yada, really digging, ya know? Then my FH seeing how she really can dish out the jokes and the sarcasm, felt he could do it back (if someone was joking around with you, wouldn't you think they could take it back?) So he jokingly said to her, which is going to sound horrible, but if you were there to here the ball busting going on, it wasn't out of context - 'If you don't want me marrying her, then we just won't invite you to the wedding!' Mind you, we weren't even seriously getting engaged at that point. Well, mt Godmother got mad at me for not 'defending her' (OMG, give me a break) and has not spoken a word to my FH since (3 1/2 years . . .) My godmother (as much as I love her) is the type who thinks she knows everything and acts like everything and everyone is beneath her. So now holidays are always awkward as well as all family functions. He had tried a couple of times to say hello, to break the ice, but she flat out ignored him.

So my honey is spending Turkey Day with us this year since his family is going to be all over the place, and I am so happy, but also dreading the TENSION, as usual.

Thanks for letting me vent. I have held this back for so long and really can't take it anymore. I mean, get over it! What is it going to be like when we are married next year?

Re: I so dread holidays with my relatives . . .long story-vent

you need to pull her aside and have it out- let it know its hurting you and will only cause more problems throughout the years

Shes being stupid and needs to know that FH was only kidding but her holding the grudge is way out of line- thats not how you welcome someone into the family

holding it in otr allowing her to perpetuate this attitude is just wrong

I wish you luck and hope it gets cleared up

Re: I so dread holidays with my relatives . . .long story-vent

I have tried sitting down talking to her explaining how much it hurts, my mother has tried- she is stubborn and refuses . . . She is not the type of person that can 'sit down and talk about it.' It is my mother's sister and my other aunt and cousins have all tried to get involved and no one has been successful. She is hopeless Thanks for your support
