What's the difference between a duvet cover and a comforter?

I always thought they were the same...

A duvet is what you slip a comforter into. Usually used with down comforters. A comforter can be used as is.

A duvet is like an envelope that you slip a comforter into. It has no stuffing of its own, it's just to make an existing comforter prettier, or match a new bedding set.
