Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

We got a golden retriever puppy today sort of an anniversary present

We brought her home today (named her Casey) and my one cat ran and hid, the other hissed and swatted at her. I have a crate for her and she is not potty trained yet so I will be keeping her in the crate over night and while we are at work for the first few months i guess.... but does anyone have experience with cats and GRs? I hope they get along eventually Casey will soon be a lot bigger than my cats!

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

Congrats on the new addition. My best friend has 3 himelian (sp) cats and a golden retriever. The dog likes the cats. One cat is afraid of the dog but thats it. The cat will just run away and hide. GR are hyper dogs though. The dog will be 2 I think soon. Its a big dog. They have a large cage that they used to train her in. They still have it and she loves it. She sleeps in it on her own.

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

thanks
I just want them all to get along! And I don't want my cats swatting at the puppy ...but soon enough, she will be 55 lbs and I doubt they will be swatting at that point!

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

my dog is about 70 pounds now (lab... similar to a golden) I have 2 cats. One of them just stays away from the dog (cat stays upstairs, dog downstairs) the other cat likes to taunt the dog. He will run down the stairs past the dog and hide behind something. The dog wants to play... so he chases the cat. Then the cat stays in a corner and will taunt the dog, hiss, swat. They don't really fight though, its sortof their 'game'. Neither has ever come close to injuring the other.

However, don't think that a small cat can't win against a dog, those claws are nasty if they want to be!!!

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

we had a golden retriever and 2 cats, they got along great....our one cat and the GR used to lay together all the time and play...when my GR passed away our one cat was so sad he would look all over for him then go lay in their spot, it was cute and sad you should have nothing to worry about.

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

Mims & bogie - how long did it take for them to become ok with each other? I feel so guilty bc my one cat is hissing at the puppy and is mad at me (lol - i can tell when he is mad at me). I am so upset i feel like a traitor towards my cats.

Re: Does anyone have a Golden Retriever AND cats?

I really think they will work it all out in time, it just takes an adjustment. They may become great friends, I have seen it happen many times, but they may just do their own thing and stay out of each others way.

Don't worry! Make sure you give them both lovin!
