Confused..how do you make your own place card insert, table numbers and menu scrolls?

I have been reading a lot of ladies doing their own place card inserts, table numbers and menu scrolls. Forgive me, but where do you start and what do you need? I would love to do this, but I'm trying to figure exactly, step by step what to do. I've read that you can do this on Word, but how do you get it positioned on the paper perfectly? Where did you ladies go to get these supplies? I'd appreciate it so much if someone can list all the items I would need. I'm a real moron when it comes to computers. The only thing I can do w/ a comp is research and type papers..that's it..lol.

I got all of my items from paperdirect.com. They give you templates to use with each paper you order.

I used mini-cards for the table cards, and regular paper for the table names that I cut down to size. All you really have to make sure is that your hall allows you to do this and what size the holders are (for example - if they use pic frames, you need to know what size they are.)
