Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

The prices on Long Island are driving me insane!!!

I really don't know that much about New Jersey, if anyone has moved or has looked into moving to New Jersey, where did you look? Do you know if there are any websites to check out school districts? We need to live within commutable distance to the city, since we both work in Mid-town. Any suggestions/advice/help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

hi

there are a few of jersey -transplants on the boards! i am from queens and my DH is from long island. we could not and would not want to spend LI prices so we looked in NJ. We finally settled on a house in Dunellen, NJ (Middlesex Cty) - central NJ. I work in manhattan and the train stops in my town; takes about 1 hr to get to work. I am at my In laws house so I will try to find a thread with a pic of my house. We bought a 4 BR house with a LR, DR, kitchen, TV room, full basement and attic for under $300k. (50x150 piece of land). The school district is good, it is ranked in the top 100 of NJ. The neighborhood is nice & friendly.

Some counties that are a fairly decent commute to the city are Middlesex, Somerset, Union, Morris....FM me for more info.

here it is!

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

I also live in NJ....I grew up on LI and DH is from Rockland. I live in Bergen county. I used nj.com to do some research....along with asking people I know who lived there. You can FM Mandy77....she is/was a real estate agent in NJ and she might be able to help. I haven't seen her on the boards....but I think she was getting married in August, so she might be on her HM.

Good luck!!!

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

I grew up in Princeton, about a 40-45 minute train ride from the city in Mercer County, central NJ. I LOVED it, and the schools were in the top 5 in NJ at the time. But, I looked now and I don't know how much cheaper the houses are than LI...I would move back there in a second!

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

Fh and I will be moving to Jersey after our wedding. Just keep in mind the property taxes are kind of close to certain areas of LI and NJ does not have the Star program.

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

I am from LI and DH is from NJ and we live in Union County now. We take the train from a town called Maplewood and its about a 35 minute train into Penn Station. Taxes are very high in certain counties but I think if you look in Union and Middlesex counties you'll find places that are not far from NYC and decent prices and taxes. FM for me info.

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

I used to live in NJ and now live in Valley Stream. Be very careful because the taxes vary in regards to new construction. I had a townhouse in Union and payed the same taxes as my MIL in Valley Stream. New construction taxes could add as much as $1000 to your mortage a month. I would have stayed in Jersey but DH hates the state and I am originally from Brooklyn anyway. Good Luck!

Re: Thinking of moving to New Jersey.....

Jersey Girls in the Union / Middlesex / Somerset area (and anyone else who would like to come!) we should have a GTG

I know absolutely NO ONE in my new area (friend-wise). My DH and I were joking that we have no friends. We have only met our neighbors who are nice...but older!
