Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

I plan 100% to look at and try all methods to take care of my cat scratching up our new couches w/out removing her claws.

A friend of mine told me her vet did it via laser and it it is 100% pain free and didn't change her cat. Is this true? I would never put her through any pain and would rather replace our couches if that is the case.

Also, up to what age can you do this? I didn't do it when they were kittens since I didn't want to declaw them.

Only one of them scratches the couch, I wish she would learn from her sister not to scratch.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Karen

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

Note...Whether or not it's painful for the cat shouldn't really be the issue...

The reason declawing cats is not recommended is because if your cat somehow escapes from your home, he won't be able to defend himself in the outside world--which would be more painful to him, I'm sure.

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

My cats just had this done, and I can tell you it's absolute BULLSH!T that it's pain free. My cats were in pain for a week, and one of my cats ripped the stitches out and bled everywhere. (They stitch them up on top of the laser.) BUT, my cats are completely back to normal now, and they are exactly the same as they used to be, only no claws. I had a cat that was declawed the old way, and I swear she was never the same again, and she had casts on her paws for like 2 weeks. So I hope that helped. If you want more info, let me know.

ETA: The vet said any age cat over the age of 6 months can have this done.

OMG! I am not by any means an animal rights activist or anything, I swear! But just reading that makes me wonder how anyone could do that to a poor kittie

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

As Peanut said, I'm not an animal rights activist either -- but I simply do not think there is any pain-free or humane way to declaw a kitty... I just believe they are meant to have their claws ... I was told that declawing a cat is the equivalent of someone cutting a humans' fingers off!

Trust me, I know how tempting it is .. I get so frustrated with my Mia when I see how much she is destroying our sofa .. but declawing is not the answer

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

I don't even owna cat, but I know some of my friends had problems finding home for their cats that were de-clawed. A lot of rescue agencies won't take them. I know you think you won't ever give them away, but never know what is going to happen.

Also, I think if you got additonal cats, they too have to be declawed.

My friend swears by this all natural spray. I forget what it is called, if you haven't heard of it, FM me & I will try & find out.

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

i know many people say if a cat is declawed they cannot defend themselves, but I beg to differ in some cases.

I 'inherited' my MIL cats which she had declawed(still has back claws) and kept them as inside/outside cats. The Moocha always seems to be able to defend himself and brings me home'presents' of all kinds.

I am not saying all cats willbe like this, I am saying some are.

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

I have two cats.

One of them uses his scratch board, the other uses the couch... so I went out and got soft paws... they are claw caps that you put over your cats nails- it takes away the sharp edges and is pain free.. they were developed by a Vet in CA where it is illegal to declaw cats.

I highly recommend these. They are easy to apply and they last a long time- about 3 months.. they come off naturally as the cat's nails grow.. then you just reapply.

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and opinions. I appreciate it.

I started researching this method of claw removal on line to learn first hand about it. I read enough to know that I don't want to take this approach even if all else fails. I read about various behavioral modification techniques and I'm going to give those a try.

Tourist: if you could give me the name of that natural spray I would be very grateful.

Karen

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

Don't do it! You should buy a few little scratching posts. My one kitty ALWAYS goes to the scracthing post, which is near the couch. Sometimes he proceeds to the couch, but I just push him off and he kind of looks at me like, what was that for? But he gets the idea. Who knows what he does while we are at work. But we have a big scratching post with carpeted levels on it that they use and the mini scratching post in the living room. Try it!

Re: Need Advice, laser cat-claw removal, is it pain free?

Hi TP, we are going to try more scratching posts. They already have them but maybe something new & even bigger will help. I also found a bunch of options on line so we'll discuss it and then make some purchases. I am also off to the pet store to see what they have.
