Work in the City?? Commute from LI -- is it worth it?
I'm going to apply for a promotional position within my company but the position is in Manhattan. I'm not saying I'll get it but I'm not even sure I would take it if I did. Right now, I work in Nassau and I'm quite happy with my 45 minute commute (on a bad day) but there's a giant brick ceiling in my dept. The raise on this position is only about $7000 more annually than I make now... doesn't seem like it would work out to be worth it...Any commuters who'd trade $7k to work in LI? Is the commute that bad? I'd be commuting to the financial district... more or less... what the train expense? How much do you spend to commute?

I would negotiate an extra 3k annually to cover for your LIRR expense that you didn't have before. Also remember... if you work in the city... its a LOT EASIER to be able to interview for another job while working.
Not like you would have to worry about that right now... but it may be worth something down the road.

Re: Work in the City?? Commute from LI -- is it worth it?
where do you live on LI? near a quick train station?you also have to consider all the new expenses you don't have now. If a LIRR pass is approx $250/month, and you work downtown so have to take the subway every day too (another $80/month) AND some LIRR lots charge you to park there too...so your expenses may increase about $4000 just to get to and from work. so with the other $3000 extra you are making, after taxes, you are taking home less than a couple of thousand dollars for the aggravation of the commute. so in my opinion it's only worth it if you new position offers you room for more advancement and more raises in the future.

Re: Work in the City?? Commute from LI -- is it worth it?
My husband used to spend $261 a month for his commute from the Stewart Manor train station (just west of Garden City) into Penn, including his Metrocard. It was an hour and a half door to door, and we lived in VERY western Nassau county. The further east you live, the more expenisve it gets and the longer your commute is. For us, it wasn't worth it, so we moved to North Carolina!
It all depends on how easily stressed you are, I think. My Dh was pretty tolerant, but eventually it wore him down after years of suffering on the LIRR (problems are pretty frequent, unfortunately, and crowds are always a pain-in-the-youknowwhat). But if you don't mind those things, then go wherever opportunity takes you!

It has it's upsides and down sides.Besides the $200 a month, and subway fare you have to consider parking - some parking permits can be up to $200 a month and that is if you are able to get one from your town.
But if you live close to the station this wont be a factor.
Commuting is VERY diffrent from working on LI - FH just made the move about a year ago.
We both feel that our lunch expenses and our clothing expenses went way up after making the move.

Re: Work in the City?? Commute from LI -- is it worth it?
for me the answer is a no brainer...it would be a great big YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always work in NYC but got laid off 6 months before we got married. I decided to change careers and go into medical billing. I started my job right after we got home from our honeymoon and HATED it from day one. To me, everyone was sooooooooooo unprofessional, guys acted more like girls as far as gossip goes, my supervisor didnt know what a private meeting meant and you had to ask permission to go to the bathroom!! W T F????????????? I love the 'freedom' of working in NYC...take a long lunch if I want, run to the bank at 10:30 am...I guess I have been commuting for so long it doenst bother me anymore!!

If we are not talking monetary reasons - I agree with Lisa. LI company's tend to play the we are a small business or we are a corporation when it suits them I found that there are less clear lines on HR related policies. But that is just from my experience.I feel like a lot of LI compines have less employees which somethimes leads to micro managment.

Re: Work in the City?? Commute from LI -- is it worth it?
if there's a 'giant brick ceiling' in your current office i would definitely do it bc this other job seems to have more upward mobility (ie more $ down the road).i did it for over a yr also down to the financial district and really didnt mind it too much(although i did eventually move here).
