Re: I have 20 places i want to look at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I started with almost that many, but upon making phone calls to them and asking a lot of questions, I narrowed it down to a lot less.

Well, I would think that you would want to call places first to make sure your date is available, that they are in your price range, and can accommodate the amount of people you plan on having. That should narrow it down a lot.

Yes, and don't forget to investigate how many events they usually have at one time.

another way to narrow down are start times - some were really late for saturday night- matters if you don't want a huge gap between church and reception

I started with a list bigger then that and ended up visiting about 15-20. Keep very good notes. I created a spreadsheet and kept a detailed log of all my contact with the hall. I created a questionaire for each place and kept notes, including first impressions, likes, dislikes, prices and wrote it on this one page - that way I could keep all info about each place together. Pay attention to little things too. Like one place was very nice, but the parking situation was a mess - the valet line was soo long. One place the BM was so rude to us and didn't even walk with us as we looked around. Those type of things helped us narrow it down.Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!

Those places are all so different. You have to keep in mind # of events at one time, size, price, etc... I've heard good things about almost all of them : )

Those places are all extremely different. Hmmm...you definitely need to narrow the places down to a more realistic list. I say realistic because they all hold a different number of people and their prices are totally different.also, those places are in every location possible. You should narrow it down to how long you want to drive between your church and the hall.
How did you come up with that list?

I did the same thing, I made a sheet up and asked all the places the same questions, orginally I had about 20 places, but due to location, price, etc etc, i narrowed it down to 9 places I actually went to see..
I choose the swan club, because it had the garden feel i wanted and it was near the water which FH wanted..
ETA: I agree about the first impressions, the first place I really loved.. it had the look and feel i really wanted, and even now when I compare it to the swan club, there are still somethings that are better at the first place, but when I met my BM I knew that the slight things that bothered me.. were gonna be okay because the personal feel i wanted the swan club could def provide..
The place I really wanted, the BM was so rude and acted like she was doing us a favor speaking to us.. that it totally made me hate the place I loved.. so go see all of them.. and you'll know when you find the place!
Good Luck and Have fun!!!

Definately make calls - you'll be surprised how many places are cut off due to one thing or another. Tall Grass - depending on how many people, they can not really accomodate for the cocktail hour. I have 125 (small) and they couldn't really accomomate me. Good luck - don't stress!

I called alot of places first, asked them an approximate price range and what dates that had available. I did this first because I didn't want to go to a place and fall in love with it and then find out it is too expensive for us.

Re: I have 20 places i want to look at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited post
I was going to say the same thing as WC -- they are so spread out. If I were you I would start narrowing it down that way. You've places in Queens and places way out east. If you choose a place that doesn't have grounds and you plan to stop for pics, this makes has an effect depending on where you want to go. Is there a church involved? Getting ready location?Well, those are some things to consider first, IMO. I started with a list about as big and ended up visiting a little over 10 places, I think. I narrowed it down by calling and doing my best to get a price out of them over the phone (damn near impossible sometimes!). Then I mapped them out and visited three per day that were close to each other.
Yes, all these places have different looks and prices ranges and capacities, but you are probably like me -- you didn't really know what to expect until you started looking. So start. Once I started looking, I kind of knew which places I didn't need to go see because I had a better idea of what look I wanted or what features I was particularly interested in from a reception site. I was then able to go back to my list and make some more cuts.
Good luck!

Leonard's, Swan Club and East Wind are berry popular with brides on LIW. They have there own threads. You can do a search of those and probably many more..Just hit the search button and type something in. That is a good way to get feedback. But, I also agree with making calls to figure which of the 20 are in your budget. That should probably narrow it down some, lol. That's what I did.

There are a lot of different kinds of places on your list. I would definitely call first. I spoke to a few people on the phone and I was turned off by them so that helped narrow it down. Then settle in on a price range and a list. My sister got married at George Washington Manor, which is sooo nice, but can only hold a max of 120 people (a little tight) They are the same owners as Milleridge. I am partial to East Wind because I am getting married there and i was very happy with the people there. GET A BUDGET FIRST! That is what helped me the most

Do you have a price range you want to stay within?

Re: I have 20 places i want to look at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited post
I would also ask what their minimum is. We are inviting about 140 and I eliminated one or two places b/c the guaranteed minimum was 120 or 125. We have a lot of out of towners and may possibly not get 125, so I didn't want to pay for guests that would not show up.Another thing that made me eliminate one or two places was that the cocktail hour would have been in the same room as the reception, and that just did not appeal to me at all- Milleridge was one of those, but if the weather is nice, they can have the CH outside.

I booked the Astoria World Manor. I attended a retirement party there a year or two ago, and liked it. I went back for a tasting, and booked. We are having a Saturday afternoon reception.Welcome New Vendors
